Banned driver who drove home from court sentenced
A motorist who drove home from court immediately after being banned from getting behind the wheel has been sentenced again.
Matthew Testa, 51, was disqualified for six months during a hearing at Harrogate Magistrates' Court on 18 December, but despite being warned the ban was effective immediately, he got in his Porsche and started driving home.
Just over half an hour later, officers stopped Testa, from Whalley, in Lancashire, on the A59 near Skipton and he was charged with driving while disqualified and driving without insurance or MOT.
At Sheffield Magistrates' Court on Friday, he pleaded guilty to the charges and was sentenced to 10 weeks in prison, suspended for 12 months.
He was also fined £1,254 and disqualified from driving for 58 weeks.
After the sentencing, North Yorkshire Police prosecutor Catherine Coady said: "Testa knew he had been disqualified from driving, but within minutes he was back behind the wheel.
"He showed a total disregard for the court, and as a direct result of his actions he now faces a far longer driving ban."

A man accused of stabbing an 86-year-old three times while trying to make off with his Porsche is heading to prison, Oregon officials said. Jesus Ascencio-Molina, 31, from Gresham, was ordered to serve 80 months behind bars, or more than six years, after pleading guilty to second-degree robbery and second-degree assault in the incident, the Clackamas County District Attorney's Office said in a June 28 news release. McClatchy News reached out to his attorney June 30 and was awaiting a response. Ascencio-Molina is accused of attacking the older man outside a grocery store on Dec. 27, 2024, prosecutors said. He said he liked the 86-year-old's 2011 Porsche Panamera and asked him two times to hand over the keys, according to prosecutors. The man said no, and Ascencio-Molina 'stabbed him twice in the back and once in the right rib cage,' prosecutors said. Ascencio-Molina fled and was arrested at an apartment complex close by a couple of hours later, according to prosecutors. The 86-year-old was taken to a hospital and survived his injuries. Ascencio-Molina offered the man an apology in court, saying, 'I wasn't thinking straight,' prosecutors said in the release. Gresham is about a 20-mile drive east from Portland.

Drivers seen 'racing' at illegal street car meet
More than 100 vehicles were seen at an illegal car meet on the borders of North and West Yorkshire, police have said. An organised event involving "racing on the roads and dangerous driving" took place on a road between Sherburn in Elmet and South Milford on Sunday evening. North Yorkshire Police said the "cruise" put passing members of the public "at risk of serious injury or worse". The force said details of registration plates had been taken and those involved could face prosecution. Insp Clive Turner said: "Driving in such a dangerous manner on public roads is completely unacceptable and risk the lives of those driving, those watching, and innocent members of the public." Many drivers who were not detained when officers broke up the gathering would receive court summonses by post, he added. Police have appealed to the public who may have any footage of the meeting to come forward. North Yorkshire Police have released previous warnings about illegal car meets and street racing in the area, and in March 2024 closed down an event at Selby Fork on the old A1. Drivers were reported to be parked in live lanes and a crackdown on the gatherings in partnership with West Yorkshire Police was announced. One injured after major A1(M) smash near Darlington
A crash on the A1(M) near Darlington caused hours of tailbacks and left one person in hospital. A black Ford Focus, red VW Transporter and HGV crashed at 3.10pm on Saturday (June 28), closing the road for about two hours. It happened on the southbound carriageway near Barton, between junctions 56 and 57 and was said to involve one vehicle crossing the central reservation. One person was taken to James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough for treatment and the vehicles were recovered after crash investigators finished their work at the scene.
