SHAH ALAM - An accountant pleaded not guilty in the Sessions Court here today to charges of leaving his two biological children, one who is visually impaired and the other, with mild autism, without reasonable supervision.
The 39-year-old man made the plea after the charges were read out before Judge Norazlin Othman.
On the first count, he is charged as the father of a 10-year-old boy, who has mild autism, to have left the child in a house in Elmina Valley, Section U16, Shah Alam, on March 15, without making any arrangements for his proper care and supervision.
He is also charged with committing a similar offence on his visually impaired 12-year-old daughter at the same place and date.
The charges were framed under Section 33(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001, which provides a fine not exceeding RM5,000 or imprisonment for up to two years or both upon conviction.
He was allowed bail of RM10,000 and ordered to report to a nearby police station once a month and surrender his passport to the court, which then set Sept 4 for mention.
Deputy public prosecutor Nurul Sofea Jaysal prosecuted, while lawyer Mohd Redzuan Mohamed Yusoff represented the accused. - BERNAMA

MMEA seizes tanker carrying diesel illegally

SHAH ALAM: A vessel with seven Indonesian crew has been seized for possessing, storing and transporting over 60,000 litres of diesel without a special licence. Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) Selangor director Maritime Kapt Abdul Muhaimin Muhammad Salleh said the vessel was detained on Thursday afternoon during a patrol under Ops Ehsan, Ops Murni and Ops Tiris 3.0, about one nautical mile west of Tanjung Harapan, Port Klang. He said the captain and six crew members held valid identification documents. 'A search found an estimated 62,000 litres of diesel on board. The captain failed to produce any documentation authorising possession of the controlled item. 'A detention order was issued for the vessel with the captain and second engineer taken to the marine police jetty in Pulau Indah,' he said yesterday, Bernama reported. The case is being probed under the Control of Supplies Act 1961 for failure to produce a valid permit from the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry to possess and transport controlled goods.

45 injured in petrol station explosion in Rome

ROME: The number of injured people has risen to 45 following a powerful explosion at a petrol station in eastern Rome on Friday morning, according to the latest reports from Italian media, Xinhua reported. Italy's ANSA news agency reported that the injured include 12 police officers, six firefighters, and three emergency rescuers who had arrived on the scene after an initial smaller blast. Additional explosions occurred shortly thereafter. Two people are in critical condition and currently on life support, while six others have been classified as "code red" - the highest level of medical emergency in Italy's healthcare system. The explosion occurred at a petrol station on Via Gordiani in Rome's Prenestino district. Preliminary investigations by the local fire department suggest the blast may have been caused by a fuel pump detaching from a tanker truck. Authorities are continuing to investigate the incident. – Bernama-Xinhua
