Danielle van de Donk to consider Netherlands retirement after Euro 2025
Van de Donk, 33, has been capped 170 times by the Netherlands since her debut in 2010 but admitted last year that the 2027 World Cup may be one tournament too far for her.

The former Arsenal and OL Lyonnes midfielder, who joined London City Lionesses this summer, was part of the Netherlands side that won Euro 2017 on home soil before reaching the World Cup final in 2019, but Andries Jonker's team are reliant on results elsewhere if they are to avoid a group stage exit at Euro 2025.
Speaking at a press conference ahead of the Netherlands' final group game against France, Van de Donk was asked if the tournament felt like a final opportunity for a 'golden generation' of Dutch players. 'I can only speak for myself, yes,' she replied. 'For me this is the final opportunity.'
Then questioned if the France game could be her last appearance for the national side, she responded: 'I don't know it yet. It will definitely be my final game at a tournament.
'I will give it some thought after the tournament.'
Van de Donk started the Netherlands' opening group stage victory over Wales but was reduced to a substitute role during Wednesday's loss to England. She told reporters after the game she had been struggling with a groin injury in the build up to the fixture but had felt fit to start on the day, with Jonker describing this as a 'miscommunication', given he had already selected his starting XI.
The story made headlines in the Netherlands, but Van de Donk and Jonker both played down its significance
'I had a sore groin during three days and gradually started feeling better and wanted to wait until the match day,' she said. 'The day before the match the coach usually announces the starting squad, and this is what happened, I just wasn't fit enough.'
'It's because of the headlines you write — I described the way it happened, for me it was quite normal.'
Jonker added: 'The line-up was already set, and it's not customary to walk up to the coach and tell them you can start after all. She didn't do that either. So it wasn't an option. The plan had been discussed with the players.'
The Netherlands need England to slip up against Wales on Sunday and get a result of their own against France if they are to progress to the Euro 2025 quarter-final stage.

2006 Badgers national champion Joe Pavelski won his first American Century Championship
Retirement is treating Joe Pavelski well. The Wisonsinite who won the 2006 NCAA men's ice hockey national championship with the Badgers before playing 18 years in the NHL got some more silverware July 13, when he won the American Century Championship at Edgewood Tahoe with a walk-off eagle putt. Advertisement "You heard all the rumors about not a lot of current athletes are winning, then Steph (Curry) went and did it, so I had to retire a year ago to get this thing," Pavelski said in an on-course interview with NBC Sports after winning. The ball had yet to go in the hole before he began to celebrate. Pavelski has participated in the event nine times, but this is his first win. He finished second in the ACC in 2022 and 2024 — the latter including a playoff-hole loss to former tennis star Mardy Fish — along with eight top 10s before finally breaking through this summer. "The birthday and anniversary always line up on this weekend. It's special coming out here," Pavelski said following the event, holding the trophy. "Selfishly, I get to play a bunch of golf. It's a very competitive group out here and just an awesome setting. It feels so good to finally get one." Advertisement The 41-year-old from Plover, Wisconsin scored 73 points in the tournament, with a 2-under 70 on Friday, par 72 on Saturday and 4-under 68 on Sunday. John Smoltz in second place had 64. The tournament uses a Stableford format, awarding points for each hole's score. A hole in one is worth eight points, an eagle is six, birdie is three, par is 1 and bogey is zero points with negative two points being awarded for a double bogey or worse. How did others with Wisconsin connections perform? Pavelski was one of a handful of people with connections to Wisconsin to participate. Tony Romo, who grew up in Burlington and has won the ACC three times (2018, 2019 and 2022), finished in the top 10 with 54 points. Advertisement Future NFL Hall of Famer and former Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers scored 44 points en route to finishing 15th. His righthand man with the Pack, wide receiver Davante Adams, didn't do so hot, finishing tied for 63rd with -12 points. And if two former Packers weren't enough, AJ Hawk finished with five points, good enough for 47th place. (Malcolm Mackenzie/PA via AP) NORTH BERWICK, Scotland (AP) — Chris Gotterup came up with the clutch shots on the biggest stage he has faced Sunday, taking down crowd favorite Rory McIlroy with a 4-under 66 in a two-shot victory in the Scottish Open that gives him another week of links golf. Gotterup got a spot in the British Open at Royal Portrush, with Nicolai Hojgaard and Matti Schmid also taking the final positions through the International Qualifying Series. Advertisement Gotterup's lead was down to one over McIlroy and England's Marco Penge, but McIlroy missed a 12-foot birdie at the par-5 16th and Gotterup hit a right-to-left putt from 10 feet in the heart of the cup for a two-shot lead with two to play. He didn't blink the rest of the way on the course after his final birdie, winning by two over McIlroy (68) and Penge (66) for his second PGA Tour title. Gotterup finished at 15-under 265 at The Renaissance Club. Scottie Scheffler, the world's No. 1 player coming off a two-week break, had a 67 to tie for eighth. LPGA Tour and Ladies European Tour Advertisement EVIAN-LES-BAINS, France (AP) — Grace Kim delivered one stunning shot after another in the Evian Championship, starting with an eagle to force a playoff and another eagle to beat Jeeno Thitikul on the second extra hole to make her first LPGA Tour win a major title. Kim, whose 2-foot eagle putt on the par-5 18th in regulation gave her a 4-under 67, looked to be just as surprised as everyone else when she rolled in a 12-foot eagle putt to win the playoff. The 24-year-old Australian calmly placed her hand over her mouth and stood still before doubling over and breaking into a smile. On 18 in regulation, Kim blasted a fairway metal onto the green. The ball rolled back down the slope to 2 feet for eagle to tie for the lead. Thitikul's birdie putt for the title missed right. She shot 67 and joined Kim at 14-under 270, one ahead of English amateur Lottie Woad (64) and Minjee Lee (68). Thitikul had to make an 8-foot birdie putt to extend the playoff. Playing the 18th for the third time, Kim again delivered another beauty over the pond and onto the green to about 12 feet.
