Danielle van de Donk to consider Netherlands retirement after Euro 2025

Netherlands midfielder Danielle van de Donk says she will consider retiring from international football after the European Championship and confirmed it would be her last major tournament with the national side. Van de Donk, 33, has been capped 170 times by the Netherlands since her debut in 2010 but admitted last year that the 2027 World Cup may be one tournament too far for her. Advertisement The former Arsenal and OL Lyonnes midfielder, who joined London City Lionesses this summer, was part of the Netherlands side that won Euro 2017 on home soil before reaching the World Cup final in 2019, but Andries Jonker's team are reliant on results elsewhere if they are to avoid a group stage exit at Euro 2025. Speaking at a press conference ahead of the Netherlands' final group game against France, Van de Donk was asked if the tournament felt like a final opportunity for a 'golden generation' of Dutch players. 'I can only speak for myself, yes,' she replied. 'For me this is the final opportunity.' Then questioned if the France game could be her last appearance for the national side, she responded: 'I don't know it yet. It will definitely be my final game at a tournament. 'I will give it some thought after the tournament.' Advertisement Van de Donk started the Netherlands' opening group stage victory over Wales but was reduced to a substitute role during Wednesday's loss to England. She told reporters after the game she had been struggling with a groin injury in the build up to the fixture but had felt fit to start on the day, with Jonker describing this as a 'miscommunication', given he had already selected his starting XI. The story made headlines in the Netherlands, but Van de Donk and Jonker both played down its significance 'I had a sore groin during three days and gradually started feeling better and wanted to wait until the match day,' she said. 'The day before the match the coach usually announces the starting squad, and this is what happened, I just wasn't fit enough.' 'It's because of the headlines you write — I described the way it happened, for me it was quite normal.' Advertisement Jonker added: 'The line-up was already set, and it's not customary to walk up to the coach and tell them you can start after all. She didn't do that either. So it wasn't an option. The plan had been discussed with the players.' The Netherlands need England to slip up against Wales on Sunday and get a result of their own against France if they are to progress to the Euro 2025 quarter-final stage. The 25-year-old is a proven winner having claimed league titles in four of her five seasons there and added a second Champions League trophy in 2022. Carpenter has also made 87 appearances for the Matildas after making her debut aged just 15 against Vietnam and looms as a long-term leader set to enhance her credentials at Chelsea. 'I'm really excited about this new challenge, it's a new adventure,' Carpenter said. 'It feels like the right move for me, and I can't wait to get started and give my all for this club. 'I'm very proud to join such a big club, one of the biggest in women's football. Chelsea have enjoyed so much success in England, and I'm delighted to now be a part of it.' Carpenter recently got married to Dutch player Danielle van de Donk — the couple met playing for Lyon but they will now be rivals in the English League after van de Donk moved to the London City Lionesses. Chelsea's head of football Paul Green said the club had wanted to get Carpenter on-board for some time. 'Ellie is a player who we have tracked for many years. She has a lot of experience for someone of her age and has won numerous titles in her career, including the Champions League,' Green said on the club's website. 'She is an athletic fullback who loves to get forward. We are excited to see how she continues to develop and what she will add to an already talented squad of players. 'Everyone at Chelsea warmly welcomes Ellie to the club, and we wish her every success during her time as a Blue.'

Ellie Carpenter (top) has been playing for Australia since she was just 15 (COLIN MURTY) Australia's right-back Ellie Carpenter has left Lyon to join Chelsea, the English champions announced on Wednesday. Carpenter, who has agreed a four-year contract, will be reunited with head coach Sonia Bompastor, who took charge of Lyon in 2021 before guiding Chelsea to a treble-winning season in her first campaign last year. Advertisement Carpenter moved to Lyon in 2020 and in the five years since has won two Champions Leagues, four French championships and the French Cup. "I'm very proud to join such a big club, one of the biggest in women's football. Chelsea have enjoyed so much success in England, and I'm delighted to now be a part of it." Carpenter, who hails from Cowra, a small town in New South Wales, began her senior career at the age of 15 and became the youngest woman ever to play football at the Olympics at Rio 2016, aged 16. She went on to play at the subsequent Games in Tokyo and Paris. Advertisement Aged just 18, Carpenter secured a move to the US with Portland Thorns before moving on to Lyon. Last month Carpenter married her Lyon teammate Danielle Van de Donk but the Dutch midfielder, 33, will now be a rival in the Women's Super League having joined London City Lionesses - owned like Lyon by the American businesswoman Michele Kang - on a free transfer at the end of June. fjt/mli/bsp/iwd

Matildas star Ellie Carpenter and her new wife are set to become rivals just weeks after their stunning French wedding

Matildas star Ellie Carpenter tied the knot with former Lyon team-mate Danielle van de Donk in France last month, but the pair are now reportedly set to become rivals on the footy pitch. Carpenter, 25, is on the cusp of a move to join her Australia team-mate Sam Kerr at Chelsea and will leave Lyon during the off-season after having spent five years at the club, according to Channel 7. It also comes as her new wife, Van de Donk, who has been at the footy club since 2021, is also moving to pastures new ahead of next season. The former Arsenal midfielder is joining up with the London City Lionesses, meaning, should Carpenter's reported move to the Blues go ahead, the pair will square off in the Women's Super League next season. The London City Lionesses were crowned victors of the Women's Championship last season, earning themselves a spot in the WSL for the 2025-26 season. Carpenter, meanwhile, has made 126 appearances for Lyon and has a year left on her current deal with the French outfit. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Ellie Carpenter (@elliecarpenterr) But the footy couple are now set to become rivals on the pitch, as they are both set to leave Lyon However, the right-back is expected to put pen to paper a three-year contract with the west London club. It means she'll reunite with former Lyon boss Sonia Bompastor for the new season, with the pair going on to win the Women's Champions League together at the Premiere Ligue club in 2022. Carpenter and Van de Donk are understood to have met when the Netherlands star, 33, joined up with the French outfit in 2021. The pair went public on their relationship back in 2023 and announced their engagement on New Year's Day in 2024. Carpenter and Van de Donk tied the knot in a stunning ceremony at the Chateau Hermitage de Combas in southern France's Servian region. The pair published several pictures from the day on Instagram, with Carpenter writing: 'I choose you. I will always choose you.' Both footballers stunned in beautiful white gowns as they stood on the lawn of a luxurious French mansion. Van de Donk's gown was made by bridal gown brand Pronovias while Carpenter's gown was made by Collingwood-based custom dress maker Mia Ateliers. Carpenter had a year left on her Lyon contract but is being backed to sign a three-year deal with the Blues She called it 'the dress of her dreams'. 'The setting is so lush and green, it's beautiful,' Carpenter told Vogue. 'It's got this unique, elegant vibe but still feels grounded in love and who we are as a couple. Intimate, natural, and full of heart.' Van de Donk, meanwhile, has been named in the Netherlands squad for this summer's Women's Euros, which kicks off today. The Netherlands have a set of tough fixtures ahead of them too. They'll first take on Wales on July 5 in Lucerne, Switzerland, before travelling to Zurich to play England. Their final group stage match comes on July 13 against France in Basel. The Euros comes just as Van de Donk has agreed a deal to join London City, following three years at Lyon. 'It's just such a nice environment to be in, the club really appeals to me, it reminds me of a little family, and I want to be a part of it," Van de Donk said.
