Golf Fans Aren't Pleased With Mike Tirico's Performance At The Open
Mike Tirico has been considered one of the best broadcasters in sports for countless years, but golf fans aren't exactly fond of his performance at Royal Portrush.
Tirico, a five-time Sports Emmy Award winner, is best known for his work as the voice of "Sunday Night Football." That being said, NBC utilizes him for the Olympics, horse racing's Triple Crown, and the U.S. Open among other sporting events.
Even though NBC has leaned on Dan Hicks and Kevin Kisner for its coverage of the 153rd Open Championship, Tirico has been featured on Friday's broadcast. So far, the early reactions on social media haven't been kind.
"Less Mike Tirico more golf," one fan declared.
"I know the expectations are incredibly low but it really is ridiculous how little golf NBC shows its audience," a second fan wrote on X. "Recaps and long Mike Tirico intros, then have to show delayed stuff that could have been shown live because of said recaps/Tirico. A vicious cycle indeed."
"Dan Hicks is bad and Tirico is terrible," a third fan commented.
"Mike Tirico is annoying me with all this talk of a country that doesn't exist (Northern Ireland). I wish he would shut up and let Pauly McGinley take the reins and refer to the North of Ireland correctly," another fan said.
The third round of the Open Championship will be televised on NBC from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. this Saturday. There'll also be featured groups on Peacock in the early morning.
Fans should expect to hear more of Tirico's commentary this weekend.
As of this writing, Scottie Scheffler and Matt Fitzpatrick are at the top of the leaderboard.Golf Fans Aren't Pleased With Mike Tirico's Performance At The Open first appeared on The Spun on Jul 18, 2025

FedExCup Playoffs: Who is sitting on the bubble entering the 3M Open?
With the final major championship now in the books, only two weeks remain in the PGA Tour's regular season schedule. That's leaving limited time for those on the bubble to earn a spot in the FedExCup Playoffs. The top 70 golfers in the FedExCup standings will earn entry into the FedEx St. Jude Championship next month, which marks the first of the Tour's three playoffs events. This is the third year of the Tour's new postseason system, which cut the field size down from 125 to 70 for the first playoff event. After the tournament in Memphis, the top 50 golfers will earn entry into the BMW Championship the following week. Those who make it into the BMW Championship will also earn automatic entry into the eight signature events on Tour next season. From there, the top 30 will qualify for the season-ending Tour Championship at East Lake in Atlanta. That tournament is set to kick off on Aug. 21, and will feature a traditional start this season, rather than the staggered starting strokes format it's used in the past. The 3M Open marks the first of two final chances for golfers right on the cusp to make a jump in the standings. Here's a look at who needs a big week at TPC Twin Cities outside of Minneapolis: FedExCup standings: Top 10 As of Monday, July 21 Position Name Points 1 Scottie Scheffler 4,806 2 Rory McIlroy 3,444 3 Sepp Straka 2,595 4 Russell Henley 2,391 5 Justin Thomas 2,280 6 Harris English 2,232 7 Ben Griffin 2,212 8 JJ Spaun 2,144 9 Tommy Fleetwood 1,738 10 Keegan Bradley 1,749 FedExCup standings: Just inside the bubble As of Monday, July 21 Rickie Fowler and Ben An are probably the biggest names in this group, and they're both in the field this week at the 3M Open. A solid finish here would undoubtedly take any stress out of next week, and allow them to shift their focus to the FedEx St. Jude Championship. Keith Mitchell, however, is just barely safe. He's got a two-point lead over Emiliano Grillo, so a big week is critical. Position Name Points 61 Kevin Yu 645 62 Erik van Rooyen 634 63 Rickie Fowler 632 64 Nico Echavarria 628 65 Cam Davis 616 66 Patrick Rodgers 616 67 Ben An 595 68 Matti Schmid 590 69 Nicolai Højgaard 590 70 Keith Mitchell 589 FedExCup standings: Outside looking in As of Monday, July 21 Emiliano Grillo is easily in the best position among this group, as he's just two points shy of catching Keith Mitchell. That's something he could easily do this week. Rasmus Højgaard is last on this list, and he has more than 100 points to climb. He, however, is not playing in Minneapolis. Position Name Points 71 Emiliano Grillo 587 72 Davis Thompson 552 73 Eric Cole 546 74 Alex Smalley 544 75 Christiaan Bezuidenhout 534 76 Kevin Roy 532 77 Chris Kirk 530 78 Gary Woodland 521 79 Ryo Hisatsune 504 80 Rasmus Højgaard 480

Real Madrid ready to test Liverpool with 'cheeky' £25m bid
Liverpool are in the process of conducting a landmark summer transfer campaign. Despite winning the Premier League title, sporting director Richard Hughes and Arne Slot have decided to improve the squad from a position of strength. We've already seen the squad augmented by the additions of Florian Wirtz, Milos Kerkez, Jeremie Frimpong, Giorgi Mamardashvili - and Hugo Ekitike will shortly be confirmed as a Red. After that there could be movement for a new centre-back - as uncertainty continues to swirl around the future of Ibrahima Konate. The trail has gone somewhat cold around Marc Guehi in recent weeks but others - such as Jorrel Hato and Illia Zabarnyi have been looked at. Liverpool's centre-back overhaul Liverpool have already lost Jarell Quansah to Bayer Leverkusen in a deal worth over £30m - meaning there is considerable scope for adding a new option in the position. And Hughes and Slot will need to safeguard against a possible departure of Konate either this summer or next. Under contract until 2026, Konate has shown no inclination of signing a new deal - at least on terms acceptable to Liverpool. Instead there is a feeling that he is letting his current deal run down in anticipation of striking a lucrative free transfer with Real Madrid next summer. Madrid plot £25m Konate bid However, there remains the possibility that the French international is SOLD this summer as Liverpool hope to recoup the £35m spent on him back in 2021. And a report in Football Insider claims that Madrid could test the water with an opportunistic £25m bid this summer. That would give Liverpool a decision to make - either lose Konate for nothing next summer or else cut their losses and earn some transfer income on him in the next few weeks. Konate in box seat 'They'll probably put in a cheeky offer of around £25million, but that's not going to be enough to get him,' a report reads. 'The player is in the box position here, he can stay at Liverpool and talk to interested clubs in January.' Neither solution is the ideal one for Liverpool. Konate, 26, has established himself as Virgil van Dijk's preferred partner and his departure would require a senior option to come straight into the team alongside the Dutchman. Guehi would be the ideal candidate in that regard but Liverpool have also got their eyes on some emerging talents. Either way, succession planning around Konate is going to have to take place right now as Madrid lie in wait. **👉 **Liverpool set to increase transfer budget by £200m 🔗
