Debora Cahn Says It Is 'More Important Than Ever' To Shed Light On Work Of Civil Servants As ‘The Diplomat' Receives Outstanding Drama Emmy Nom

The Diplomat landed its second and third Emmy nominations Tuesday, including one in the Outstanding Drama Series category, which creator Debora Cahn says couldn't have come at a more apt time. 'It's just really, really gratifying to see that everybody is getting this recognition. It's a show about civil servants, and thousands of them just got fired. [So], it's also nice to see that people are enjoying watching a show about what they do,' she said. 'It doesn't happen all the time, and they deserve some recognition.' More from Deadline Music Supervisor Gabe Hilfer Lands Three Nominations In The Same Category Snubbed By Oscars, 'Will & Harper,' 'Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story' Score Multiple Emmy Nominations 'The Daily Show' Nearly Doubles Its Own Emmy Record Cahn says she thinks it is 'more important than ever' to peel back the curtain on the lives and careers of public servants 'whose jobs we know nothing about and whose daily life we don't hear about.' 'Hopefully, it can create a little bit of an appreciation for what these people do, at least in the public, if not in the government,' she said. 'These are people who work incredibly hard in order to make other people's lives better, and seeing them mowed down is horrifying and terrifying for what it means for the country and what it means for the world, and it just feels more important to be shining a light on what this work is and what it means and what these people do.' By the time she spoke with Deadline, Cahn said she'd already caught up with The Diplomat star Keri Russell, who is nominated for her role as U.S. Ambassador Kate Wyler for the second time. She called Russell a 'f*cking rock star' and a 'national treasure' who she's grateful to have worked on this project with. Cahn is also hard at work on Season 3 of The Diplomat, which she told Deadline 'is pretty much ready to go.' 'We're in post, and we're locking episodes, and it's gonna come on the air in the fall, and we're really excited about it,' she smiled. As for how she'll celebrate the win? Well, she and The Diplomat writers are going to take the day to soak it all in. 'I'm not really sure that we should say in the paper that I'm going day drinking, but…literally, as soon as I get off the phone with you, me and the writing staff are gonna go out and celebrate,' she teased. ‘The Voice' Misses Out On Emmy Nom For First Time Since 2012 As ‘Survivor' Returns

The Voice has lost out on the chance to win its fourth Emmy after missing out on a nomination for the first time since 2012. The NBC show has been usurped in the Outstanding Reality Competition Program category with Survivor returning after missing out last year. The full nominees in the category are: The Traitors, RuPaul's Drag Race, The Amazing Race, Survivor and Top Chef. The Voice has been nominated every year since its second season in 2012 with wins in 2013, 2015, 2016 and 2017. The show campaigned for its Season 27, which was judged by Michael Buble, John Legend, Adam Levine and Kelsea Ballerini. Season 28, which launches this fall, will feature judges including Buble, Reba McEntire, Snoop Dogg and Niall Horan. Last year, The Traitors won the award for Outstanding Reality Competition Program, beating out The Amazing Race, RuPaul's Drag Race, Top Chef and The Voice in the category. It marked the Peacock series' first main Emmy nomination – for its second season – with host Alan Cumming also winning Outstanding Host for a Reality or Reality Competition Program. RuPaul's Drag Race has been the big winner over the last few years. The series won four consecutive awards starting in 2018, having usurped The Voice and The Amazing Race, which previously regularly won the category, before losing out to Prime Video's Lizzo's Watch Out For The Big Grrrls in 2022 and coming back to win in 2023. Survivor is back in the category. It missed out last year after the CBS show landed its first nomination in the category in 2023 since its 11th and 12th seasons in 2006.
