First Look Photo From AVATAR: FIRE AND ASH Featuring Quaritch and Spider — GeekTyrant

A first look photo has been released from the upcoming sequel, Avatar: Fire and Ash . The picture features Spider (Jack Champion), who in The Way of Water got the family reunion he never wished for when his father, Stephen Lang's Miles Quaritch, returned in 'recombinant' Na'vi form, wreaking havoc on Jake (Jake Worthington) and Neytiri's (Zoe Saldaña) clan – all leading to the death of our heroes' eldest son, Neteyam.
Clearly, this puts Spider in quite the predicament going forward – caught between his reborn biological dad, and the family that raised him.
As reported in Empire, Spider's dynamic with Quaritch 2.0 is set to become even more twisted in Avatar: Fire And Ash – seen together above in a world-exclusive still from the upcoming threequel.
'They reconnect out of necessity,' Stephen Lang, aka Slang, tells Empire . 'Their connection is not a solo connection. There are times when everybody comes together on some level. But, when enemies cooperate, you can be sure betrayal is just around the corner.'
"Spider confuses Quaritch," the actor continues. "But Quaritch wants clarity. There is something about Spider that Quaritch really loves — not a word we associate with him. I think respect and admiration really develop in spades, as well as animosity and manipulation. The relationship will deepen — for better or worse."
Jack Champion addressed this complicated dynamic last month when he said, "[Spider] feels very conflicted. His 'dad' is reborn into this Na'vi form and still as evil as ever, if not more so, and he still felt he had to save him. You see that guilt play out, and the evolution of Spider trying to figure out where he belongs."
This third installment brings back Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaña, and Sigourney Weaver, as the saga returns to Pandora. This time, the story will introduce the Ash People, a new Na'vi faction tied to the planet's volcanic regions. It looks like a darker, more intense chapter in the Avatar universe.
Cameron previously said: 'You'll see a lot more Pandora that you never saw before. It's an insane adventure and a feast for the eyes, but it's also got very high emotional stakes, more than ever before. We're going into really challenging territory for all the characters you know and love.'
He also shared: 'I've shown it to a few selected people and the feedback has been it's definitely the most emotional and maybe the best of the three so far.'
Avatar: Fire and Ash is set to hit theaters on December 19th. Check out the full first look photo above.

I Think Netflix's #2 Movie May Be My Favorite Animated Film Of The Year So Far, But I'm Still Bummed About One Thing

When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. It may seem easy for us entertainment journalists to be jaded about the business, but I love when a movie can truly surprise me. While I knew that Netflix's KPop Demon Hunters was a pretty well received 2025 movie release, I didn't get around to watching it during its first week of release . However the movie's high spot on the domestic Top 10, as well as the character you see above - known as Derpy Tiger - drew me into the fray this past weekend. Having now seen this animated adventure for myself, I can say that it's definitely something to cheer about! At the same time, it also reminded me of something that I hope Netflix gets better about with its movies. With that, we need to talk about those angels and demons currently on my shoulders. Let's start with the good news: KPop Demon Hunters is, without question, one of the best animated movies of 2025. It's a hell of a claim to make seeing as this is the same year we've seen Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl and The Day the Earth Blew Up hit the market. I'll stand by it however, as the Spider-Verse-inspired visuals paired with KPop's painstaking choreography and musical prowess alone are worth giving this PG-rated eye-popper a spin. Directors/co-writers Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans' flashy and heartfelt movie sees demon slaying/KPop trio Huntr/x face off against a boy band of demons known as the Saja Boys. While the ladies are trying to seal off the rift between the world of humanity and demon-kind, the boys are working to corrupt all of the progress they've made. The battle in this Netflix subscription booster gets physical, but it's also full of catch KPop tunes that are going to be stuck in your head. Now you're probably wondering what could be such a bummer considering how much raving I've done about KPop Demon Hunters? As it turns out, a very common occurrence with Netflix originals feels like even more of a slight in the case of this original animated hit. Apparently there was a limited theatrical release for KPop Demon Hunters, or at least that's what the official press page for the picture says in Netflix's media library. Only a week after its debut, I cannot find a theater showing this well tuned thrill ride. Despite most major theaters not carrying Netflix movies, unless some sort of special arrangement like Glass Onion's narrow theatrical window, I have a handful of indie theaters that definitely run their product. KPop Demon Hunters has a killer soundtrack and stunning 3D-ready visuals that would pop at the multiplex. As luck would have it, Sony Pictures Animation's gorgeous and emotional ride doesn't waste time proving my case, and the video that proves it is readily available. You can see what I'm talking about with the lyric video for the first track, 'How It's Done,' below: KPop is a worldwide phenomenon right now, and that's probably the biggest reason why I think KPop Demon Hunters should have gone to theaters. Unlike Elio's box office woes, having a cultural juggernaut to link to your original movie helps practically write the marketing campaign. While its success on streaming proves that fresh ideas can still find an audience, it would have made even more sense to let this picture slay at the multiplex. Taking advantage of the silver lining we have going for us, I highly suggest you watch KPop Demon Hunters, now streaming on Netflix. Should you be as taken with Rumi, Mira and Zoey's antics as Huntr/x as I am, don't be afraid to share it! Maybe if we make enough noise, a wide theatrical release could see our girls dancing up a storm in 3D, similar to how Disney brought Turning Red to theater screens after debuting it on Disney+. Or perhaps this continued traffic might greenlight a sequel that fulfills this would-be franchise's big screen promise. If you won't do it for me, then do it for Derpy Tiger!

‘Foundation' Season 3 Digs Into What It's Like for a Robot to Have an Existential Crisis

Foundation, Apple TV+'s adaptation of the famed Isaac Asimov novels, takes place in a galaxy facing an imminent, mathematically predicted age of darkness. It's troubling, especially for Empire, the genetic dynasty of clones named Cleon that's been in power for centuries, but it's not as bad as all-out extinction. But as season three begins, certain among Foundation's characters learn the math has changed, and total doomsday is all but certain. Some react to this news—signaled by worrisome changes in the Prime Radiant, the quantum supercomputer of sorts that divines what lies ahead—by escalating preventative actions, while others decide partying will help. But the most thought-provoking response comes from Foundation's arguably most complex character: Demerzel, played by Laura Birn. She's an ancient robot, the last survivor of the Robot Wars. Several hundred years ago, she was reprogrammed by the first Cleon to serve Empire—a directive that guides all of her actions and one she's powerless to defy. As Foundation has progressed, we've learned a lot about Demerzel. Her backstory gets more investigation in season three, but as Empire (and, by extension, all of humanity) faces what's to come, her role in that future becomes decidedly confusing. 'I'd say very much she is in an existential crisis,' Birn told io9 at a recent Foundation press day. 'For many centuries her path has been very clear, since [she was programmed by Cleon I], and before that also.' But that clear path is now muddied. 'This season, the information that the Prime Radiant offers—and when [season three villain] the Mule arrives, the effect it has on the whole galaxy—suddenly offers these new paths, possible paths. She's thought that she always knows the right answers, like, 'this is a way we have to work, this is the way I'm going to guide the galaxy, or guide the Cleons.'' Birn continued. 'Suddenly, when that shifts a bit, [a lot of] questions arise. What if the end comes? What's [her] responsibility in all this? Where does it leave [her] if the human species is destroyed? Is it a good thing for her? Is it something very lonely and sad? Does she carry a responsibility? Can she make a difference? So all these things kind of spiral her into a place of 'what is the purpose of my life, what is the meaning?' So it's very much an existential crisis.' Early in season three, Demerzel reaches out to a leader in the Luminist faith—Foundation fans will recall it from a key season one storyline—to act as a sounding board for her crisis. 'I think, like in many of her decisions, it's hard to say if it is a good thing or a helpful thing,' Birn said. 'In the palace nobody knows her secrets. She's very held back. She's very controlled. So to have those moments where she can literally reflect on her own things—decisions that she's made, contemplating the past and the future—it is powerful, but I'm not sure if it's helpful. Maybe for her, but maybe not for humankind.' Demerzel stores the Prime Radiant, which resembles a small jewelry box, inside her chest. It's almost where her heart would go if she were human. The choice is one made out of convenience, of course, but there's also a deeper meaning, as Birn pointed out. 'It's interesting: how do we define where the humanity in us lives? We often think that it's the heart that feels. Or it's the soul—where do we think the soul exists? That play of, that there's just a mechanical thing inside her, which is actually something so relevant for the whole galaxy, and the information that she holds close to her heart and the decisions that she makes. So yeah, I do love the play of that.' Foundation returns to Apple TV+ with weekly episodes starting July 11. Want more io9 news? ‘Wicked' star gushes about Zendaya and Tom Holland's romance: ‘They deserve to be together'

Jonathan Bailey appears just as captivated by Zendaya and Tom Holland 's romance as their fans. While promoting his latest film ' Jurassic World Rebirth, ' the ' Wicked ' actor spoke fondly of the 'Spider-Man' couple while playing a game of 'Snog, marry, avoid?' for a segment with BBC Radio 1. 'They deserve to be together all the time in every room if they want to be,' Bailey said at the start of the game, where he was asked to choose whom he would kiss (snog), marry or avoid among Zendaya, Holland and social media mogul Kylie Jenner, who is currently dating ' A Complete Unknown ' star Timothée Chalamet. 'I'm not splitting up Zendaya and Tom in any way,' he explained in the video, posted on Monday, June 30, before opting to avoid Jenner — 'for that reason only.' He went on to contemplate what to do with the couple. 'Well they're gonna be married soon, aren't they? So if you marry one, you're married into a throuple,' Bailey continued, referring to the Oakland ' Euphoria ' star and her fiancé. Ultimately, he decided he would snog Holland and marry Zendaya. The A-list couple met in 2017 on the set of 'Spider-Man: Homecoming,' and went public with their romance four years later. Though neither has spoken about their engagement, Zendaya debuted her 5.02-carat diamond ring at the Golden Globe Awards in January and Holland's father later confirmed the news on his Patreon account. Law Roach, Zendaya's longtime friend and stylist, revealed that the couple's wedding is ' far away ' due to both actors' busy filming schedules. The actors are about to begin filming 'Spider-Man: Brand New Day,' according to a recent social media post from Holland, and are also working on Christopher Nolan's mythic action film 'The Odyssey' together. Both are scheduled for release in July 2026. On top of that, Zendaya is also filming the highly-anticipated third season of HBO's 'Euphoria' as well as the latest installment of the science-fiction film franchise 'Dune.'
