For these awards, films that received their certification from CBFC (Central Board of Film Certification) between January 1, 2023 and December 31, 2023, were eligible. 2023 was one of the more successful years for Indian cinema in the recent past, but as is well known that a film's commercial success has nothing to do with its probability of winning a National Film Award. 2023 saw the release of popular Hindi films like Pathaan, Animal, 12th Fail, OMG 2, Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani, The Kerala Story, Adipurush. In Telugu cinema, films like Sita Ramam, Month of Madhu, Balagam, Dasara among others. In Tamil cinema, films like Jailer and Leo proved to be massive blockbusters. Malayalam films like Nanpakal Nerathu Mayakkam, 2018 Everyone is a Hero, Iratta, Kaathal – The Core, Adrishya Jalakangal also released in 2023. In 2024, when the 70th National Film Awards were announced, Rishab Shetty won the Best Actor award for Kantara. The Best Actress honour was shared by Nithya Menen for Thiruchitrambalam and Manasi Parekh for The Kutch Express. The Best Director honour went to Sooraj Barjatya for his film, Uunchai, and Best Feature Film was won by the Malayalam film Aattam. Mani Ratnam's Ponniyin Selvan I won four awards across various categories making it the biggest winner of the year. First handed out in 1954, National Film Awards were previously known as State Awards. In those years, only the best films in different regional languages were recognised and awarded. The awards for actors and technicians working on the films were first given in 1967. Nargis was the first actor to win Best Actress for her performance in Raat Aur Din. Uttam Kumar won the Best Actor award for Antony Firingee and Chiriyakhana in the same year.
