Taking to his X handle, PM Modi, who is on a five-nation tour, paid tributes to the revered Hindu monk. He said that Swami Vivekananda's thoughts and vision for our society remain our guiding light.
'I bow to Swami Vivekananda Ji on his Punya Tithi. His thoughts and vision for our society remains our guiding light. He ignited a sense of pride and confidence in our history and cultural heritage. He also emphasised on walking the path of service and compassion,' wrote PM Modi on X.
Swami Vivekananda passed away on this day in 1902. He was a philosopher, monk, and nationalist, and advocated for fearless living and spiritual awakening. His teachings remain deeply relevant in India's socio-political landscape.
His words continue to inspire generations, reminding people of the power of togetherness and harmony.
Swami Vivekananda, on May 1, 1897, founded the Ramakrishna Mission. The motto was to spread the ideals of his Guru, Sri Ramakrishna.
His iconic speech at the World's Parliament of Religions in Chicago in 1893 continues to inspire generations. He introduced India's age-old message of unity, peace and brotherhood to the world.
Swamiji's famous quote, "Arise, awake, and stop not till the goal is reached", remains a powerful call to action meant to encourage individuals, particularly the youth, to be proactive, persistent, and dedicated in pursuing their goals. It emphasises the importance of self-awareness, motivation, and unwavering commitment to achieve success.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah, while paying his tributes to the Swami, said that he was the pioneer of the renaissance of Indian wisdom, philosophy, and cultural pride.
'On one hand, Swami Ji inspired the countrymen towards spiritual advancement, while on the other, he awakened moral strength and self-confidence in the youth. Swami Vivekananda, who re-established the prestige of Indian knowledge tradition on the global stage, called upon the youth to arise, awake, and not stop until the goal is achieved. The ideas of Swami Vivekananda, who considered education the cornerstone of social development, will always remain guiding lights in the direction of nation-building," wrote HM Shah on X in Hindi (loosely translated).
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh paid his respects to the great Swami. 'He is an inspiration not only for India but for the youth of the entire world. We are all fully committed to fulfilling his dream of building a prosperous and progressive India,' wrote Singh on X.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee took the occasion to mention the efforts she has undertaken to preserve the Swamiji's house.
She wrote on X, 'The message of universal brotherhood and peace that Swamiji gave remains equally relevant today. The Hinduism that Swamiji believed in is the same one I believe in - and that religion says that the religion of humanity is the greatest. Inspired by Swami Vivekananda's ideals, I wish that the people of Bengal, the people of the country, irrespective of religion, caste, or class, will respect and love one another – this is my desire.'

Cong. demands judicial probe into Haryana recruitment of assistant professors by HPSC
Alleging large-scale irregularities in the recruitment process for assistant professors in various subjects in Haryana, Congress Rajya Sabha member Randeep Surjewala on Sunday demanded that the exams be conducted again in a transparent manner and judicial probe initiated into the matter. A delegation of candidates also submitted a memorandum to former Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda at his Delhi residence in this connection. Haryana Chief Minister's media secretary Praveen Attrey denied the allegations as 'baseless', saying that Mr. Surjewala had made similar accusations over half-a-dozen times since the BJP first came to power in 2014 and was 'frustrated' over the people voting the party to power for the third time in a row. Mr. Surjewala, at a press conference in Hisar, alleged irregularities in the exam for the recruitment of assistant professors (Geography) saying that 32 questions for the exam conducted by the Haryana Public Service Commission (HPSC) were taken from the question paper for geography conducted by the Bihar Public Service Commission. The HPSC had advertised 2,424 posts for assistant professors in 26 subjects in August last year and around 1.5 lakh candidates had applied for it. The posts were advertised after a gap of around five years. 'Seals broken' Mr. Surjewala said seals of envelopes carrying question papers for assistant professor (Hindi) exam were found broken at six centres and the HPSC had to cancel the exam two days later. The HPSC initially maintained that the process was not compromised, but later cancelled the exam, which was the 'biggest proof of scam', alleged Mr. Surjewala. Addressing the delegation of the candidates appearing for the Assistant Professor exam, Mr. Hooda said that 'paper leaks, copy-paste exams and scams have become synonymous with the recruitments conducted under the BJP government'.

PM Modi, world leaders wish Dalai Lama on 90th birthday
Dharamshala: Wishes poured in from the world over as the Dalai Lama turned 90 on Sunday. Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended greetings to the Tibetan leader. "I join 1.4 billion Indians in extending our warmest wishes to His Holiness the Dalai Lama on his 90th birthday," said his message, read out by Central Tibetan Administration president Penpa Tsering at the event. A message from US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said: "Washington is committed to promoting respect for the human rights and fundamental freedoms of Tibetans". A message from the President of the Republic of China (Taiwan) was also read out on the occasion. Thousands of Tibetan Buddhists thronged the Tsuglagkhang Complex in McLeodganj to be part of the historic celebrations, watched over by the majestic Dhauladhar mountains. Recorded video messages from three former US presidents were also played, with the crowd bursting into thunderous applause when Barack Obama appeared on the huge screen. Obama called the Dalai Lama "the youngest 90-year-old I know", and thanked him for his friendship. Hollywood actor Richard Gere set the tempo for the event, describing the Dalai Lama as the "greatest ever to have walked the earth". 1 2 Gaya: Amid chants of peace and spiritual homage, the 90th birthday of the 14th Dalai Lama was celebrated with solemnity and joy at the world heritage Mahabodhi Mahavihara in Bodh Gaya on Sunday even as the event drew sharp responses from the Chinese embassy and a clarifying statement from India's ministry of external affairs (MEA). The Chinese embassy in India on Sunday asserted that the Dalai Lama could not decide whether the reincarnation system would continue. Responding, Indian MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said, "The govt of India does not take a position on matters concerning beliefs and religious practices. It has always upheld and will continue to uphold freedom of religion for all in India." As far as Dalai's birthday celebrations at Bodh Gaya are concerned, the morning ceremony, jointly organised by Namgyal Tibet Monastery and the International Buddhist Council (IBC), began with special prayers, robe offerings and chanting in both Theravada and Mahayana traditions before the statue of the Buddha.
