Orlando Pirates striker Tshegofatso Mabasa says his side will need a shift in mindset if they are to dethrone Mamelodi Sundowns, who have dominated the league for the past eight seasons.
Pirates appear best placed to have another strong campaign, having emerged as the side most likely to challenge Sundowns after addressing the loose ends — with new player additions set to strengthen the squad this season.
The Buccaneers are returning to the CAF Champions League, but with the league title also a major priority — having missed out for over a decade — consistency will be key in achieving their targets.
Mabasa, who has been crucial for the Soweto giants over the past three seasons, believes the team needs to adopt the right mentality to overcome what has become a well-oiled Sundowns machine.

'We know we are up against a points machine, it's very rare for them to slip up in the league. Mabasa said at the premier of his sides documentary series Giants.
'That is the sort of mentality that we also have to develop as a team, we saw what happened last season, we won the first seven games and then we lost against Stellenbosch FC, and then the gap started to open up at three points.'
The Sea Robbers started strongly last season but struggled to maintain the level of consistency needed to go toe-to-toe with the Brazilians. Mabasa added that they must shut down areas of weakness and be more consistent by learning from their past failures.
'We tried to play catch up as much as possible, but unfortunately it didn't happen even though we had the games in hand but this season it's all about trying to be consistent in terms of winning as many games as possible.
'It's normal to have a loss in a season because that is when you get to see the mistakes you're making and you're able to learn and correct them, hopefully it happens in a not so important game or it's mistakes we can recover from and not ones that will be detrimental to our season like the ones we made last season.'
The Buccaneers striker didn't get as much game time as he would have liked — especially after winning the golden boot the season prior — with strong competition from teammate Evidence Makgopa limiting his minutes on the field.

Despite limited appearances, the 28-year-old made an impact when called upon and enters the new season in high spirits, hoping for more regular involvement.
Mabasa is also closing in on club legend Benedict Vilakazi's all-time top scorer mark, as he currently stands on 46 goals — just six behind Vilakazi's tally of 52 — a milestone he hopes to reach early this season.
'I am looking to have a big season,' Mabasa continued. 'I think I am10 or 11 goals away and I want to achieve that record before the AFCON starts.
'It's possible, we have five games in August, six with the MTN8, so I don't see why not. I don't see pressure, it's about speaking things into existence and into life, and they will happen.'

Lucas Ribeiro walks out of Sundowns: Qatari club close in

Lucas Ribeiro Costa has rocked Mamelodi Sundowns by abruptly exiting their pre-season camp in Rustenburg on Saturday, as transfer negotiations reach boiling point. The Brazilian attacker, tipped as a leading contender for the Footballer of the Year award, requested to leave the camp just days after joining up with the squad, a move that strongly hints at an imminent transfer. Masandawana are currently sharpening their preparations at Royal Marang ahead of the 2025/2026 season, which kicks off this Sunday evening with a blockbuster MTN8 quarter-final against Richards Bay FC at Lucas Moripe Stadium. But all eyes have now turned to Ribeiro's future after his unexpected departure. Since arriving in June 2023, Ribeiro has proven indispensable to Sundowns. His electric form delivered 25 goal contributions in 51 appearances, playing a pivotal role in the club's historic eighth straight league title triumph. Following their FIFA Club World Cup journey, the Brazilian rejoined training on 21 July. And linked up with the squad at Chloorkop before heading to Rustenburg. But within days, he asked to leave, fuelling speculation about his next destination. While top clubs from France, Belgium, and Brazil, including Fluminense, have shown serious interest. Fresh reports from the Middle East have thrown a twist in the tale. 'Qatar Sports Club reportedly began negotiations in early July for the signature of Lucas Ribeiro,' claim sources close to the matter. Latest developments suggest the Qatari outfit is on the brink of sealing a deal for the 26-year-old winger. Sundowns have not officially confirmed Ribeiro's departure. But their decision to allow him to leave the camp signals that the club may already be planning for life without him. His availability for Sunday's high-stakes encounter now hangs in the balance. With his sudden absence leaving supporters and analysts reading between the lines. 'Sundowns granted Ribeiro leave from the camp,' a source close to the club confirmed, further fuelling transfer speculation. Where will Lucas Ribeiro land, Fluminense or Qatar SC? Mamelodi Sundowns striker breaks silence on future amid exit talk

Mamelodi Sundowns striker Abubeker Nasir has confirmed he's in active discussions with Masadawana regarding his next move, with the striker making it clear that he's desperate to return to action, even if it means leaving Chloorkop. The Ethiopian forward has endured a frustrating spell in South African football. Last season, he didn't feature in any competitive matches during his loan stint at SuperSport United. The club de-registered him in January due to persistent injury setbacks. 'I'm at home training alone and without any pain on the ankle injury which made me not play,' Nasir said, as per Kick Off . 'Maybe I will go to another club. I don't know but I want to play football.' Nasir's time at Sundowns has failed to deliver the impact the club initially hoped for. Despite signing a five-year deal in January 2022, he has only managed 17 appearances and scored four goals. Sundowns sent him back to Ethiopian Coffee on loan for six months shortly after his arrival, hoping he would regain sharpness. However, his Chloorkop return has brought limited success. For all his promise, the 25-year-old appears to have tested the patience of the Sundowns technical team. The striker insists he's now fully fit and eager to prove himself. 'This season I want to play football and which team it is it doesn't matter,' he declared. 'We are in discussions with Sundowns because I'm now back in Johannesburg after spending time at home in Ethiopia during the off-season.' Despite his setbacks, Nasir still caught the eye during the March FIFA window. He started both of Ethiopia's World Cup qualifiers and netted three goals, showcasing the quality that once made him one of the most exciting prospects in East African football. Nasir remains under contract with Sundowns but has not rejoined the squad since their return to pre-season training last week. With competition stiff at Chloorkop and his injury history a lingering concern. A move elsewhere, permanent or loan, could offer the fresh start he craves. Sundowns now face a decision.
