Curse of WWE stars from tragic fall to shower stabbing and double murder

Daily Mirror23-05-2025
After the news of Maxx Justice's death rocked the WWE world, leaving fans devastated, we've taken a look at some of the past wrestlers whose lives were tragically cut short
WWE wrestler Maxx Justice has died after being knocked off his bike by a vehicle in a road accident, aged 63. The star, whose real name is Mike Raybeck, was on his way home from work in California when he was fatally struck, causing his tragic death.
His career spanned from the 1990s to the early 2000s and was mostly spent with the All Pro Wrestling, but he also competed in WWE when it was still under its previous name, the World Wrestling Federation. But it's not just Maxx Justice whose life came to a heartbreaking, sudden end, as a number of WWE stars have passed away over the years in sad circumstances.

Chris Benoit
Perhaps one of the most shocking cases in the wrestling world was Benoit. In 2007, the Canadian fighter killed his wife and son before taking his own life. He was 40 at the time, and his legacy was quickly ruined by the notorious killings.
Owen Hart
At just 34, Canadian wrestler Owen Hart sadly fell to his death during a live WWF event in 1999 due to a harness malfunction. The cause of death was later revealed to be internal bleeding from blunt force trauma. The impact severed his aorta, resulting in Hart bleeding to death just minutes later.
Brian Pillman
Brian Pillman was an American professional wrestler and football player. He was best known for his appearances in Stampede Wrestling in the 1980s, World Championship Wrestling, Extreme Championship Wrestling, and World Wrestling Federation in the 1990s. He sadly died in 1997 at 35 from a heart attack, just before a scheduled WWF pay-per-view match.

Dino Bravo
Italian-Canadian professional wrestler and promoter Dino Bravo was found shot dead with multiple gunshots in 1993 in what's believed to be a mob-related hit, but to this day, his case remains unsolved.
Shad Gaspard

The former American WWE star and actor died a hero in 2020 after directing rescuers to save his son as the pair got caught up in a riptide. Shad sacrificed his own life to save his son, who managed to survive thanks to his dad. After his death, Shad was awarded the Warrior Award at the WWE Hall of Fame ceremony in 2022.
Crash Holly
American wrestler Crash Holly was found dead in 2003 after committing suicide by mixing prescription medication and alcohol at wrestler Stevie Richards' house. It's believed his career had declined after WWE's release.

Mike Awesome
Mike Awesome was best known for his appearances with Extreme Championship Wrestling (ECW) and World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE). However, the star killed himself in 2007 after reportedly dealing with depression and career decline.
Perro Aguayo Jr

Mexican wrestler Aguayo died in a freak accident from a cervical spine trauma, reportedly as a result of the dropkick that propelled him forward to the ring ropes, causing severe whiplash trauma that snapped his neck in 2015.
Silver King
The professional wrestler and actor from Mexico died after collapsing in the ring in front of fans during a bout in London. He suffered a heart attack in the ring mid-event, initially mistaken for a routine wrestling moment. Fans criticised the amount of time it took for him to receive medical attention.
Bruiser Brody
Bruiser Brody was stabbed backstage in a shower by fellow wrestler José González, also known as Invader 1, during a wrestling event in Puerto Rico. González was charged with murder but claimed self-defence and was acquitted by a jury and was not convicted of murder.

Princess Eugenie enjoys sun-soaked holiday with A-lister 'brother she never had'

Robbie Williams and his wife Ayda were hosted by their friends Princess Eugenie and her husband Jack Brooksbank at their home in Portugal While many royals are enjoying their summer holidays away from the UK, Princess Eugenie and her husband Jack Brooksbank are hosting their A-list friends Robbie Williams and his wife, American actress Ayda Field, for a sun-soaked holiday at their second home in Portugal. ‌ Eugenie, the youngest daughter of Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson, splits her time between her home in Kensington Palace home, Ivy Cottage, and the second holiday home the family own in Portugal. ‌ The celebrity couple and the princess shared a series of snaps on Instagram, as Ayda posted images of the friends bare-faced and smiling after a day in the sunshine. It comes after reports of William and Kate Middleton's fears over move with kids after Royal Family 'bad blood'. ‌ Ayda captioned her post: 'Obrigada', which means 'thank you' in Portuguese - again suggesting that Eugenie was playing hostess. The families were snapped seeing the sights of the Portuguese town, playing time at the beach and indulging in a spot of golf. Eugenie has been close with Robbie and Ayda for many years, with the couple's daughter Teddy even being picked as a flower girl at Eugenie's 2018 wedding to Jack. ‌ Eugenie and her husband are said to know the Williams family very well, with the princess reportedly viewing Robbie Williams as 'the brother she never had'. Robbie and Ayda were first introduced to Eugenie by her mother, Sarah Ferguson, in 2011 after Fergie and Ayda reportedly bonded during a shopping day in St. Barts. ‌ The two women got on well enough for the Williams clan to invite Fergie and her daughters to their house in Los Angeles, and by May of 2011 the family was on close enough terms with the Royals to watch the Eurovision Song Contest at Robbie's house in Wiltshire. Eugenie and Jack own a luxurious villa at the exclusive CostaTerra Golf and Ocean Club in Comporta, located on the Alentejan coastal strip, where prices start from a staggering £3.6 million. The couple moved there when Jack began working as a marketing, sales and promotion expert for the super stunning resort. The princess, who has previously shared family photos from their time in Portugal, opened up about her sons' love of the ocean in an exclusive interview with HELLO! last year, as she spoke of August and Ernest, saying: "They love swimming." "The sea in Portugal's a little bit rougher. So we've got our feet in, but Augie is a fish. He literally loves it and we have whales and dolphins all across the walls."

Russell Wilson left stunned as sold-out crowd BOO him at MetLife ahead of his first season with the Giants

Russell Wilson is the new face of the New York Giants but the veteran NFL quarterback was given a brutal reception by the crowd at MetLife Stadium on Sunday night. The 36-year-old and his family were among the crowd at WWE SummerSlam, which took place at his new home stadium over the weekend. Russell even brought a specially-designed Giants championship belt. But when he appeared on the jumbotron, many inside MetLife booed the quarterback. The 82,000-seater stadium is, of course, also the home of the Giants' rivals, the Jets, with the two New York teams meeting at MetLife for a preseason game on August 16. Wilson is a 10-time Pro Bowler and a Super Bowl winner who spent last season at the Pittsburgh Steelers. The veteran quarterback joined New York in March after agreeing a one-year deal worth up to $21million with the Giants. The Giants also signed Jameis Winston and drafted Jaxson Dart but Wilson was recently named the starter for 2025. Brian Daboll's team will begin the season at the Washington Commanders before travelling to the Dallas Cowboys in Week 2. Wilson's first chance to wow the crowd at MetLife will come on September 21, when the Kansas City Chiefs are in town. On Sunday night, he watched from the front row as Brock Lesnar controversially returned to WWE after two years in exile due to his alleged involvement in the Vince McMahon lawsuit Lesnar last appeared for the company at SummerSlam in 2023 and was written off television despite being one of the company's biggest stars at the time allegedly due to his ties to the McMahon litigation.
