UAE: SIH launches second Heritage Conference in July
SHARJAH (WAM)Under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, the second Heritage Conference organised by the Sharjah Institute for Heritage (SIH) will kick off on Wednesday, July 2, 2025, under the theme 'Folk Heritage Through the Eyes of Others.'The event will run until Thursday, July 3, at the Arabian Heritage Centre in Sharjah's University City, with the participation of a distinguished group of academics, experts, and specialists from various Arab and foreign countries.The conference aims to shed light on the image of Emirati and Arab folk heritage as perceived by foreign researchers, through a series of academic papers and discussions that explore examples of intellectual and cultural exchange between local traditions and global perspectives.This comes within the Institute's ongoing efforts to foster civilisational dialogue and share expertise in the fields of heritage preservation and transmission across generations.The first day's programme will see the opening of the accompanying exhibition titled 'Our Heritage Through Their Eyes.' The exhibition features artworks, documents, and field research conducted by non-Arab researchers that highlight their experiences in documenting elements of folk heritage in the region.The programmme of the conference spans two days and includes six specialised sessions addressing a variety of topics. Key themes include: foreign perceptions of folk heritage, cultural discourse in international studies, and the role of global institutions in heritage preservation, in addition to presentations of research projects and field studies from different regions.The Sharjah Institute for Heritage has announced the selection of Dr Saif Mohammed bin Aboud Al Bedwawi as the honouree of this year's conference, in recognition of his scholarly contributions in the fields of historiography and cultural heritage, and his prominent role in documenting the UAE's national memory and strengthening cultural identity through academic studies and reference works.
Dr. Abdulaziz Al Musallam, Chairman of the Sharjah Institute for Heritage (SIH), emphasised that the conference is a vital intellectual milestone for the Institute, saying: 'We are keen to make this conference an open space for dialogue with researchers from around the world, to understand how our heritage is perceived beyond our borders, and how we can present it in ways that preserve its authenticity while aligning with current cultural transformations.'

Sharjah Social Services takes part in ‘Al Khairat'
The programme 'The Emirati House – Al Khairat' aims to highlight authentic societal practices that reinforce the concept of positive citizenship and showcase the behavioural and social aspects of Emirati cultural heritage. The first focused on teaching sana'—Emirati customs and traditions—including the principles of hospitality and traditional coffee serving, as well as heritage games such as the dallah and the finjan. The second workshop focused on Emirati cooking and featured an interactive session on how to prepare bathitha, one of the most renowned traditional dishes. The session contributed to strengthening intergenerational communication and highlighting Emirati cultural and social heritage. This initiative reflects the department's commitment to promoting national identity and connecting generations with local heritage, aligning with its goals to serve the community and enhance cultural awareness across its various segments. Instilling values and strengthening Emirati identity On this occasion, Naama Al Zarouni, Director of the Social Education Department at Sharjah Social Services, affirmed the importance of the department's participation in community programmes like 'The Emirati House – Al Khairat', due to their positive impact on children and society as a whole. She pointed out that the department, through its Social Education Division, always seeks to deepen the understanding of Emirati identity and connect new generations with their heritage, while ensuring workshops are delivered in enjoyable and interactive learning environments. Al Zarouni explained that the workshops—delivered by a specialised team from the Social Education Department—aim to teach the fundamentals of Emirati customs and traditions, including hospitality etiquette, how to receive guests, and how to serve Arabic coffee. She stressed that such activities help instil values in children from a young age, especially in light of the challenges posed by the digital age, which can affect morals and values. She added that as a community institution, the department is committed to integration and cooperation with various child-focused entities to preserve local identity and community heritage. She praised the efforts of Sharjah Children and their constant dedication to launching diverse initiatives that develop children's skills and empower them to become productive contributors to society. UAE to train Emirati youth in global social missions
A programme has been launched to prepare Emirati youth to take part in UAE-led social missions around the world, including humanitarian, developmental and cultural. Launched from Japan, the programme designed by the Federal Youth Authority, seeks to embed a culture of volunteerism among the Emirati youth. The five-year programme will train Emiratis aged 21 to 35, who are "passionate about humanitarian work and committed to promoting values of solidarity and community responsibility". It seeks to raise awareness, provide specialised skills through high-quality training, support communities in need, and involve youth in international relief missions, national news agency WAM highlighted. Khaled Al Nuaimi, Director of the Federal Youth Authority, said the initiative is a new milestone in strengthening the UAE's pivotal role in volunteering missions.
