Cosplay in Australia just keeps getting better and there are so many opportunities to admire the amazing work of crafters, creatives and hobbyists.
Brotherhood of Steel Soldier and Hot Rod Shark paint from Fallout
Doug Marr and his son create these epic armour-style suits from the Fallout franchise. The cost of materials alone was around $2000.
'Business correct' Deadpool from Deadpool
Was it Ryan Reynolds in disguise? No, but Angus Riddle had it covered with his take on Marvel jester, Deadpool.
Princess Peach from Super Mario Bros.
Alyssa O'Toole is an experienced cosplayer that loves to dress up as your favourite movie, TV and gaming royalty.
King Rauru from Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom
Wade Caleb takes on many forms as a cosplayer. This detailed King Rauru outfit was created over the span of nine months.
The Matron of Ravens from Dungeons & Dragons and Naofumi Iwatani from The Rising of The Shield Hero
Siblings, Jess and Matthew Woo brought a cool, calm and collected energy to their costumes and they didn't have to spend an arm and a leg putting them together.
Springtrap from Five Nights At Freddy's 3
This build has plenty of moving parts but Joseph Walker's patience paid off. His 3D printed Springtrap was turning heads as guests walk through the door.
The Lorax and The Onceler from The Lorax
The funniest duo — Jorja and Braydan Robinson — took a big swing at iconic characters and totally nailed it.
Daredevil from Daredevil
Jay Vecchio's been cosplaying for over six years and he says he doesn't tire of the fun. New shows and movies give him inspiration to keep the costumes fresh and exciting.
Vi from Arcane
CJ can take on any form as a skilled cosplayer. They've built up a repertoire of fantasy heroes, comic book characters and even some Disney royals.
Lady Violet Bridgerton from Bridgerton
It all started with dressing up as The Penguin to accompany her friend's Batman. Now, Janine Feodoroff has brought plenty of characters to life, from fairy godmothers to a yass-ified Pope.
Luigi, Mario, Waluigi and Wario from Super Mario Bros
Katrina Ikonomou, Georgia Ikonomou, Tyrone Ikonomou and Benjamin Cirnigliaro brought this family game to life and the gents were sitting pretty, not having to glue fake moustaches to their cheeks.
Bo-Katan Kryze from The Mandalorian
Kris' costume looks like it's straight off a Star Wars set. It's made from donated and gifted items that have been reworked and repainted to be fit for purpose.
Skull Kid from Legend of Zelda
Tiarna Kilmister took on a new form with a super detail Skull Kid costume, complete with removable mask — just look at how the eyes come to life.
Malenia Blade of Miquella from Elden Ring and Harley Quinn from Batman
Erin Walsh and Brooke Groizard fell into the cosplay world from conversations with friends. Their costumes each range from whimsical to fierce.
Tanjiro (x 2) from Demon Slayer and Piccolo from Dragon Ball Z
It's not often you'll find two friends at a convention dressed just like each other, but Ali Ellabban, Toha Hidayat and Humza Rana seemed quite chill with it. Maybe their powers are stronger together?
Doctor Doom from Marvel Comics
Scott Henderson might give Robert Downey Jr. a run for his money with this detailed and functional costume. He can't really hold a phone in his hand, but who needs it when you have magic?
Bishoujo Optimus Prime from Transformers
Coming in all the way from Canberra, Anita Wen used a combination of made and bought materials to complete her outfit. The case that she's holding was 3D printed and painted by her.
Mollymauk Tealeaf from Critical Role Campaign 2
Rena Nero is multi-talented at cosplay and creating costumes for musical theatre. This construction of Mollymauk Tealeaf took two to three weeks to paint and minimum $300-$400 out of pocket to create.
And finally, Blackbeard Ben Grimm from Exiles
Simon Atwood assured me that this costume is "a deep cut" and I don't doubt him. The fists and masks are part of a larger construction of a The Thing costume from Fantastic Four.
What's your favourite cosplay?

Jim Shooter, Editor Who ‘Saved the Comics Industry,' Dies at 73

Jim Shooter, a hard-driving giant of a comic-book editor who took the helm at Marvel at the tender age of 27, then spent nearly a decade revolutionizing the way superhero stories are written, drawn and sold, died on Monday at his home in Nyack, N.Y. He was 73. His son, Ben Shooter, confirmed the death but did not specify a cause. Mr. Shooter was diagnosed with esophageal cancer last year. Powerfully built, with a looming 6-foot 7-inch frame, Mr. Shooter dominated the comic-book world for much of the 1980s, reinvigorating an art form that had been in decline by finding new markets and new readers. Though he was not yet 30 when he took over at Marvel in 1978, he was already an industry veteran. He sold his first comic story, to DC, Marvel's rival, when he was just 14, and he worked for both companies while still a teenager. As editor in chief at Marvel, he rationalized what had been a chaotic operation, instituting a coherent editing process and driving his staff to meet deadlines. He pushed into the growing comic-store market, targeting dedicated fans over the casual reader. Want all of The Times? Subscribe.

Spider-Gwen's New Comic Already Has Fans Reeling, And It's Not Even Out Yet

Marvel's multiverse shenanigans can be hard to keep track of, especially across its many, many different media franchises. The MCU has been following a multiverse arc since Endgame premiered in 2019, and there's reason to believe Insomniac's Spider-Man games might be dabbling in the Spider-Verse in the future. However, the multi-reality concept began in the comic books, where they've been dealing with the multiverse for decades. One of the most prominent faces of these alternate dimensions is Gwen Stacy, Spider-Man's sometimes girlfriend, who in one reality tragically dies, changing the course of the hero's life forever. In a different timeline however, the two's relationship was reversed, and Gwen became Spider-Gwen (or Ghost-Spider, or Spider-Woman) after the tragic loss of Peter. But now it looks like the comics are using some cosmic fuckery to alter things in the comic's 'main' timeline, and fans are less than thrilled. All-New Spider-Gwen: The Ghost-Spider is a new comic run set to begin in August, and when fans saw the synopsis for the series back in May, it immediately raised eyebrows. All-New Spider-Gwen has its titular hero's story rewoven into the fabric of the Marvel universe. Using the Cosmic Cube, a powerful object that can reshape realities, Gwen becomes part of Earth 616, the 'Prime' reality in Marvel's various continuities (the MCU universe name began as 616, but has since become a bit more complicated as the franchise has gone on, and is now called Earth-19999). How does this work logistically? What does it mean for both Gwen and Peter to be alive in the same universe? Does this not completely change Peter Parker's trajectory in the main 'canon?' There are plenty of questions the comics will likely answer when they start rolling out next month, but right now, a lot of Spider-Gwen fans are less concerned about how Marvel is going to explain all of this, and more bothered by how this undermines Spider-Gwen's story. Spider-Gwen isn't just another hero with the same powers as Spider-Man. Her entire premise is to be a deliberate remix of his story, an exploration of the parallels between both of their worlds, and she is at the center of one of the most compelling 'what if' scenarios in comic books. Plopping her into the 'main' story runs counter to her very premise. Some fans think this is the natural end result of her rise in popularity after the Spider-Verse films, while others argue that Spider-Man lore has become so convoluted that this feels like Marvel running out of ideas. It's entirely possible this is merely an extended vacation in the main continuity before Gwen heads back to her original life, but the official synopsis says she's 'here to stay.' We'll see how Marvel handles this reality-altering storyline, and whether this will crossover with the main Spider-Man books, when the first issue is released on August 20. . 'Spider-Man: No Way Home' changed pivotal Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire scene after director looked at Reddit

You know, Jon Watts is something of a Redditor himself. The filmmaker behind Spider-Man: No Way Home recently discussed the challenges of uniting Tom Holland with Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield — who played other iterations of Marvel's web-swinger in previous movies — in the multiversal blockbuster during a panel at the Mediterrane Film Festival. Speaking to Collider's Steve Weintraub, Watts explained how the introduction of Maguire and Garfield's characters evolved over the course of production, noting that the older versions of Peter Parker were intended to arrive in a scene where Holland's version of the character is mourning the death of Aunt May (Marisa Tomei). "There had been rumors that Tobey and Andrew were going to be in the movie, and this is while we're shooting," the director said. "We were writing the script, and we were working on where we wanted to reveal the guys, and it always seemed like Peter's going to be sad because Aunt May has just died, and that the portals are going to open, and the two Spider-Men are going to step out." Watts had a vague idea of where the three Spider-Men would first join forces. "It's probably a rooftop somewhere," he said. "It's all sort of hazy. You're still trying to figure it out." However, the filmmaker poked around online and discovered that fans had predicted that pivotal moment exactly as he'd first envisioned it. "Then I was on Reddit, and I was looking at people who had already made fan art of, 'This is probably what it's going to be like when the two Spider-Men get revealed,'" Watts recalled. "It was on a rooftop. It was sad, two Doctor Strange portals were open and two Spider-Men are stepping out. I was like, 'Well, we can't do that. If that's exactly what everyone thinks we're going to do, we absolutely can't do that.'" The film ultimately introduced Garfield and Maguire in a different location, and without Holland's character present when they first arrive in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Rather than showing up simultaneously on a rooftop, the other Peters are accidentally summoned by Ned Leeds (Jacob Batalon), who uses the magical sling ring belonging to Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) to bring the alternate Peters into Ned's family home. Watts explained how the Reddit art prompted him to play with audience expectations. "I was like, 'What does no one expect that we're going to do? What's something that no one's going to see coming?'" he recalled. "I was like, 'Probably having the two Spider-Men appear at Ned's Filipino grandma's house in Queens. I don't think anyone was doing fan art of that on Reddit.'"Including Ned's grandmother, played by Mary Rivera, provided the zig-zag that Watts wanted for the scene. "It was the middle of the pandemic, so we had to find a lady and fly her from Hawaii to Atlanta to shoot all of this," he said. "So, as soon as you put her in that scene and change the location, now I feel like I've double-crossed the audience in the best way, where they're seeing everything that they were hoping that they would see in a way that they were never expecting they were going to."
