JOHOR BAHRU, June 13 (Bernama) -- The implementation of the Ibrahim International Business District (IIBD) is set to transform Johor Bahru city centre into a world-class business hub, said Johor state housing and local government committee chairman Datuk Mohd Jafni Md Shukor.
He said the strategic initiative is not merely a physical development plan, but a comprehensive policy document encompassing economic, social, environmental and mobility aspects, aligned with sustainable development principles championed by Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi through the MAJU JOHOR agenda.
According to Mohd Jafni, the initiative focuses on urban regeneration through active participation of the private sector and local communities, in line with the Johor-Singapore Economic Zone (JSEZ) spirit that drives cross-border connectivity and investment, adopting the Business Improvement Districts (BIDs) model.

"Alhamdulillah, today I received a full briefing on the latest progress of the IIBD implementation, a strategic initiative by the Johor State Government that will transform Johor Bahru city centre into a world-class business hub.
"...with a target to increase economic value from RM208 million in 2023 to RM21 billion by 2040, the IIBD plan will feature several new development zones including an innovation hub, heritage areas, shopping precincts, urban parks and an integrated public transport infrastructure," he said in a Facebook post today.
Mohd Jafni said IIBD also aims to raise job density from 9,300 to 34,000 employment opportunities, along with a gradual increase in the urban population to create a vibrant, friendly and safe community.
"In addition, green and wellbeing elements are prioritised through the 'Greening and Cooling the City' project, which includes the development of urban parks, pedestrian walkways, bicycle lanes and eco-friendly technologies such as floating wetlands to improve water quality and urban landscapes.
"From a safety perspective, the project will introduce improved urban lighting systems, secure back lanes and family-friendly community spaces to enhance the sense of security among city residents," he said.
Elaborating further, Mohd Jafni said the project also targets smart mobility through the construction of a medium-scale public transport system, integrated parking and non-motorised route networks, supporting the state's ambition towards a smart, low-carbon city.

Ringgit opens marginally higher vs US dollar

KUALA LUMPUR: The ringgit opened marginally higher against the US dollar amidst improving United States (US) economic data, which supported the greenback, said an analyst. At 8 am, the local note rose to 4.2125/2280 against the greenback, from Thursday's close of 4.2195/2255. Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Dr Mohd Afzanizam Abdul Rashid said the ringgit remains well-supported, underpinned by the government's commitment to ongoing fiscal reforms such as the sales and service tax (SST) and RON95 subsidies rationalisation. "The foreign interest in Malaysian Government Securities (MGS) and Government Investment Issue (GII) has also been quite positive," he told Bernama. On the dollar performance, Mohd Afzanizam said the US Dollar Index (DXY) rose 0.42 per cent to 97.18 points as the latest jobs report indicates a resilient US labour market. He said the US economy looks resilient, which has led to lower expectations for an interest cut by the US Federal Reserve (Fed). "The two-year US Treasury note yielded 10 basis points higher to 3.88 per cent," he told Bernama. At the close, the ringgit traded mostly lower against a basket of major currencies. It advanced against the Japanese yen to 2.9098/9207 from 2.9333/9376, appreciated versus the British pound to 5.7568/7780 from 5.7621/7703, and rose against the euro to 4.9577/9759 from 4.9756/9827 yesterday. The local note also traded higher against its ASEAN counterparts. It improved vis-à-vis the Singapore dollar to 3.3057/3182 from 3.3146/3196, went up against the Thai baht to 12.9835/13.0421 from 13.0211/0457, and strengthened against the Philippine peso to 7.48/7.52 from 7.50/7.51. However, it was almost flat against the Indonesian rupiah at 260.0/261.1 from 260.5/261.0 at yesterday's close. - Bernama

PETALING JAYA: United Overseas Bank (M) Bhd (UOB Malaysia) has signed a tripartite memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Federation of Malaysian Manufacturers (FMM) and the Singapore Manufacturing Federation (SMF) to strengthen regional economic integration and promote foreign direct investment (FDI) flows. The bank, in a statement, said the partnership aims to strengthen the Malaysia-Singapore manufacturing corridor by leveraging UOB's regional network and expertise to help businesses, especially SMEs, expand across borders and grow sustainably. It supports the 2025 Asean Summit's theme of inclusivity, of which Malaysia chaired and hosted, ensuring that businesses of all sizes can participate in and benefit from regional growth. The agreement also builds on the momentum of the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ) agreement between both governments. UOB Malaysia CEO Ng Wei Wei said the bank is proud to be an early JS-SEZ supporter, having launched the Green Lane with Invest Johor, set up SEZ Desks, and introduced fast-track account openings. 'Since 2024, UOB has committed RM11.5bil in financing to support businesses in Johor and is actively facilitating RM10bil of FDI flows into the zone. 'Through this MoU, we look forward to working with FMM and SMF to help their members seize cross-border opportunities and contribute to Asean's industrial growth,' she said. The MoU reflects UOB's long-term commitment to Asean's sustainable growth, aiming to promote cross-border opportunities and deepen collaboration in trade, investment, and manufacturing between Singapore and Malaysia, for stakeholders and ecosystem partners. To support these efforts, UOB will provide advisory services, including tailored market entry and in-market guidance for FMM and SMF members. These services will help businesses navigate the financial and operational aspects of establishing a presence in Singapore, Malaysia, and across South-East Asia. FMM president Tan Sri Soh Thian Lai said the collaboration sets the stage for more cross-border success stories under the JS-SEZ.
