LSU Goes For 2nd National Title In 3 Years As It Opens CWS Finals Against Streaking Coastal Carolina
Tigers outfielder Jake Brown was 11 years old and living in Sulphur, Louisiana, at the time, and he recalled Friday how the players on that LSU team were superheroes to him. 'A little bit of heartbreak,' he said Friday. 'That was a great team, a team I think could have made a good run in the championship. Obviously things didn't go our way that time. Looking forward to turning it around and making something good happen for us this time.'

LSU (51–15) will be playing for its eighth national championship and second in three years. Coastal Carolina (56–11), which brings a 26-game win streak into the best-of-three series, is going for its second title in its second all-time CWS appearance. 'That would put Coastal Carolina baseball on a different planet,' Chanticleers coach Kevin Schnall said.
Cameron Flukey (8–1), who pitched four innings of relief against Arizona on June 13, will start for Coastal Carolina. Johnson has not named his starter. Ace Kade Anderson (11–1), who limited Arkansas to three hits and struck out seven in seven innings on June 14, is available.
The Tigers and Chanticleers each went 3–0 in bracket play. LSU had to beat SEC rival Arkansas twice, winning the bracket final 6–5 in walk-off fashion after a wild three-run ninth inning.
LSU's Brown is 4 for 6 with four RBIs in three CWS games, and Jared Jones is 5 for 9 with two homers and six RBIs in the last two games after striking out five times in the opener against Arkansas. Tigers pitchers have walked just four in 27 innings. 'I think if you're at this point in the NCAA tournament you've been battle-tested,' Johnson said. 'I don't believe there's anything we have not seen. … I feel like we're well-trained and well-prepared for, in my opinion, probably the best team that we've played this year in Coastal.'
The Chanticleers are yet to hit a home run at Charles Schwab Field. Colby Thorndyke has two bases-clearing doubles and is 5 for 12 with eight RBIs. Dean Mihos is 5 for 12 with a double and triple. Their pitchers have walked four in 25 innings.
Johnson, in his fourth year at LSU after six at Arizona, said his heart still aches for his 2016 Wildcats team. Arizona erased a 4–0 deficit against the Chanticleers in the third and final game of the CWS finals and stranded a runner at third base in the bottom of the ninth inning. 'We were one base hit away,' Johnson said, 'and it took a couple of years to get past that. I think what I do remember about all of that is it has really helped me the next three times that we've been here in terms of knowing how to prepare for this.'
Scoring first is key. Fast starts are a distinguishing feature of Coastal Carolina's offense. The Chanticleers have outscored their three CWS opponents by a combined 11–0 in the first inning and are a Division I-best 37–2 when they score first. LSU is 32–7 when it opens the scoring.
5 is magic number. LSU has won 16 straight CWS games when scoring at least five runs since losing 9–5 to Miami in 2004.
High expectations. Coastal Carolina's Schnall makes it a point to remind the media that the Chanticleers are a national power, but that doesn't mean in February he expected the 2025 team to play for a national championship. 'We were picked fourth in the Sun Belt,' he said. 'No problem. We'll move forward, keep our head down and keep grinding. That's what this team did. But we clearly felt like this pitching staff was going to be the best pitching staff we ever had.' The Chanticleers were 19–8 on March 29 and are 37–3 since.
Hit by pitch leaders. Coastal Carolina leads the country with a program record 176 hit-by-pitches this season, breaking UC Irvine's single season-record 175 in 2024. The Chanticleers have been plunked six times in three CWS games. 'They don't eat if they get out of the way,' Schnall said, drawing laughs. 'No, it's just something that our guys have bought into. Our guys are obsessed with getting on base. They understand the way you score runs is having guys on base. And any way you can get on base helps our team win.'
Line of the day. LSU's Brown drew laughs at Friday's news conference when he explained the straightforward and simple way Johnson prepares him and his teammates to play. 'We came here to play baseball,' he said. 'We're not really scholars.'

Grizzlies announce that Jaren Jackson jr.'s renegotiation and extension is complete
Jaren Jackson Jr.'s signing of a $239.9 million deal that keeps him under contract for the next five seasons with the Memphis Grizzlies finally became official Sunday, one day after the team reached a buyout agreement with guard Cole Anthony to facilitate the move. Jackson is now under contract through 2029-30 after renegotiating the final year of his current deal and getting a raise to $33 million for the coming season. The extension kicks in in 2026-27 starting with a salary of $46.2 million. The sides reached the agreement two weeks ago, but the Grizzlies needed to clear the space required to make the move happen before Jackson could actually sign the contract. He averaged 22.2 points and 5.6 rebounds for the Grizzlies in 74 games this past season and was an All-Star for the second time in his Memphis career. A three-time All-Defensive team pick–and the 2023 NBA defensive player of the year–Jackson has averaged 18.5 points and 5.5 rebounds in 407 career games with Memphis. Jackson had surgery for a turf toe injury earlier this month and will be re-evaluated likely sometime around the start of training camp this fall, though the Grizzlies haven't given any indication how long he will be sidelined to start the season. He suffered the injury in his right foot during offseason basketball activities, the team had said, adding that he is expected to have a full recovery. Locking up Jackson is part of a plan by Memphis to continue building around him and star point guard Ja Morant. Memphis was swept by eventual champion Oklahoma City in the first round of the playoffs in April.

Cooper Flagg's run in the NBA Summer League ending after 2 games, AP source says
Cooper Flagg's first and likely only NBA Summer League is over. The Dallas Mavericks have shut down the No. 1 pick in this year's draft after two summer league games, according to a person who spoke Sunday to the Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the team had not revealed the move publicly. Flagg — who spent his lone college season at Duke before making the leap to the NBA — averaged 20.5 points and five rebounds in his two games in Las Vegas. It's not uncommon nor unexpected for teams to shut down top picks or NBA rotation players who are on summer rosters early; for example, San Antonio shut Victor Wembanyama down for the summer after two games in Las Vegas after he was the No. 1 pick in 2023. Flagg put a variety of skills on display in his two games, including bringing the ball downcourt quite a bit. He was the main attraction in Las Vegas and seemed to handle the spotlight with ease. 'I've been through all this before, same thing going into college, same expectations, same people talking about you,' Flagg said after a 31-point effort against San Antonio on Saturday. 'So it's just trusting the work, trusting all those hours, just knowing what I can do.' Summer League in Las Vegas runs through July 20.

Fermín Hits First Major League Homer to Break Tie in the Cardinals' Victory Over the Braves
ST. LOUIS (AP) – José Fermín hit his first major league home run to break a sixth-inning tie in the St. Louis Cardinals' 5-3 victory over the Atlanta Braves on a soggy Sunday. In his 159th career plate appearance, the 26-year-old Fermín smacked a sinker over the left-field fence off Jesse Chavez (0-1) with Masyn Wynn on base to cap the scoring. Two rain delays totaled 4 hours 2 minutes. The game lasted 2:38. The Braves added a run off Gordon Graceffo (3-0) in the seventh. Graceffo threw 1 2/3 innings. Ryan Helsley pitched the ninth for his 19th save. Matt Olson led the Braves with three RBIs on two hits. Chavez started the fifth for Atlanta. He gave up two runs with two outs when Willson Contreras dropped a double in shallow right field to tie it at 3. Reliever Steven Matz surrendered two runs in the fifth. Just before the game was halted for a second time, Olson singled home two runs for a 3-1 advantage. St. Louis went up 1-0 in the second inning off Atlanta's Daniel Davis, who was recalled before the game and made his seventh career start and first this season. The Braves touched St. Louis starter Sonny Gray for a run in the third on three consecutive two-out singles in the third. Nick Allen scored on Olson's single off the wall in right field. St. Louis manager Oliver Marmol was ejected in the bottom of the ninth. It was his fourth ejection this season. Key moment–Wynn's hustle led to the St. Louis' first run. He walked and stole second base. With two outs, Victor Scott II hit a ball that bounced off Davis and caromed into a vacant area between first and second. Wynn never stopped at third and scampered home to score without a throw. Key stat–Fermín is hitting .381 in nine games since his June 25 recall from Triple-A Memphis. Up next–The Braves return to action Friday when they host the New York Yankees. The Cardinals return to play Friday at Arizona.
