Training of cops needed: Karti Chidambaram on Tamil Nadu custodial death

India Today3 days ago
Congress MP Karti Chidambaram on Saturday called for holistic training of police forces across India, including Tamil Nadu, following the alleged custodial death of a temple security guard in the southern state last month.A post-mortem report of the victim Ajith Kumar, 29, accessed by India Today TV, revealed 44 injuries, including deep muscle contusions, brain bleeding and internal organ trauma. The findings strongly suggested prolonged and violent physical torture, leading to his death.advertisementIn an exclusive interview with India Today TV, Chidambaram said the police inherited the methods of brutality from British rule and called it a "police cultural problem".
"It is gravely distressing. Custodial deaths are not happening for the first time in India, particularly in Tamil Nadu. It has been happening for many years and across governments. This is one of the legacies of our colonial past," he said."Police are using brute force to quell the people. The same traits and operating procedures were passed on to the police in independent India and they continue to use these brutal methods," he said.Calling for an attitudinal change in the police in dealing with sensitive matters, he said there should a holistic training of the police forces in India, beginning from the DGP to constable level."The only way to put an end to this menace is the wholesale training of police forces in India, particularly in Tamil Nadu. There should be sensitivity training. Everyone, including the DGP to newly-recruited constables, should undergo this training in a systematic manner," he said.Urging the Centre to step in and make police reforms, Chidambaram said professional police forces don't use third-degree methods to investigate a theft case.Asked if the Opposition would pick up his remarks to attack the ruling DMK, the Sivaganga MP reiterated that custodial deaths had been an issue across governments."This is not the first time such things are happening in Tamil Nadu. When the BJP's ally, AIADMK, was in power, the custodial deaths of (shopkeepers) Jayaraj and Bennix in Tirunelveli happened (in 2020). I am not blaming Edappadi K Palanisami for that. I am also not blaming the Chief Minister (MK Stalin) either. DMK can't be blamed for it," he said.He asserted that nobody took serious efforts to modernise the police forces in India. The Sivaganga MP said the Tamil Nadu government handed the Ajith Kumar custodial death case to the CBI."Let the CBI investigate it and give its report. Let's wait for their findings," Chidambaram said in response to a question about a SIT probe into the matter.ABOUT AJITH KUMAR CUSTODIAL DEATHadvertisementAjith Kumar, a 29-year-old working as a security guard at the Bhadrakaliamman temple in Tiruppuvanam was picked up by the police on June 27 evening for interrogation in connection with a jewel theft case. Sringeri assembly segment hobbled by lack of development, dwindling infra

Chikkamagaluru: The Sringeri assembly segment was considered one of the most prominent and wealthy in the state in terms for its development activities. However, today, residents bemoan that it is lagging behind and in need of immediate attention. From roads to administrative offices, the condition has worsened. People are suffering due to a lack of infrastructure and other issues, including yellow leaf and leaf spot diseases that are affecting areca plants, and the hazard of frequent run-ins with wild animals. The assembly segment comprises three taluks: Sringeri, Koppa, and Narasimharaja Pura, along with Khandya Hobli of Chikkamagaluru taluk. The segment has three 'mini' Vidhana Soudhas, but unfortunately, all three are in poor condition and need urgent maintenance work. Leaking roofs make it almost impossible for the staff to discharge their duties, complained one of the officials who spoke on condition of anonymity. When it comes to basic infrastructure such as roads and bridges, the condition is just as miserable. Majority of the roads, including state highways, national highways, and district roads, are in a dilapidated state, said social activist Kalkuli Mallappa Hegde. He added that the taluk offices are also in very bad shape. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Bulford: If You Were Born Between 1945-1974 You Could Be Eligible For This British Seniors Read More Undo He further claimed that bridges and roads damaged during the last monsoon are yet to be repaired. In addition, sub-standard material and workmanship has put paid to hopes of a speedy redressal. As a result of poor roads, accidents have become all too common, leaving many injured. Recently, several tourists were injured near Balehonnur after their bus met with an accident. Shekara, a Koppa resident, said MLA T D Rajegowda kept blaming the BJP for not allowing him to take up development works between 2018 and 2023. However, even though he has the authority now, he has failed to deliver. Even as Koppa tahsildar Likitha Mohan confirmed that renovation of the administrative building has been taken up at a cost of Rs 2.5 lakh, according to one official in Sringeri, the taluk office building was renovated only recently and has no leakage. MLA Rajegowda and deputy commissioner C N Meena Nagaraj could not be reached for comments.

HC: Where did cops get power to close 121 plaints against Ponmudy?

Chennai: From where did the Tamil Nadu police draw power to close all 112 complaints against former DMK minister K Ponmudy for his alleged derogatory statements against women, Shaivites, and Vaishnavites, asked Madras high court on Tuesday. In response, advocate general P S Raman submitted that all the cases were closed after following due process by conducting a preliminary inquiry under the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS). It was concluded that the speech did not amount to hate speech; therefore, the complaints were closed, the AG added. The remedy available to the complainants does not end here. Under BNSS, they have an option to appeal to the inspector general and the DGP if they are not satisfied with the findings of the investigating officer, AG said. In response to the AG's claim that the former minister was just quoting an incident that occurred 60 years ago, Justice P Velmurugan said, "Can you (TN police) say that only the original speaker can be punished and not the subsequent speaker who made the same speech?"
