Teen sentenced to six years at Henry Gurney School over fatal crash that killed five
Magistrate Ling Hui Chuan imposed the order until the teen reaches the age of 21, and further fined him RM1,500 or two months imprisonment in default, for driving underage.
The sentence was handed down after the Magistrate's Court received a report from the Social Welfare Department and submissions from deputy public prosecutor Mohd Fillanny Siji.
The teenager, who was unrepresented, pleaded guilty on May 14 to two charges under Sections 41(1) and 39(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by reckless or dangerous driving, and for driving while under the age of 16.
Speaking to reporters, Mohd Fillanny said the prosecution had sought a custodial sentence in light of the loss of five lives, adding that such cases should serve as a deterrent amid the rising number of road accidents in Kuching.
On May 14, the teen's 35-year-old father also pleaded guilty to a charge under Section 33(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001 for permitting his son to drive without proper supervision.
He was fined RM15,000, in default 12 months imprisonment and ordered to perform 100 hours of community service within six months.
On Jan 14, the teenager lost control of the vehicle he was driving and crashed into two cars and two motorcycles along Jalan Stutong Baru.
Four victims died at the scene, while another succumbed to injuries while receiving treatment at Sarawak General Hospital. - Bernama

KUANTAN: Three Bangladeshi men were killed and two others injured after the multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) they were travelling in skidded off the road at KM200.8 of the East Coast Highway (LPT1) near here yesterday. Police probe viral video of cyclists blocking car in Shah Alam
SHAH ALAM: Police are tracking down a group of cyclists whose actions — appearing to surround a car — recently went viral on social media. The incident is believed to have occurred at about 9.30pm on Tuesday along Persiaran Dato Menteri. Their behaviour was captured by a dashcam on the vehicle. Shah Alam district police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Iqbal Ibrahim said investigations revealed that the cyclists were riding on both the left and right lanes of the road. "This caused the car driver to slow down as the group was blocking the way," he said in a statement yesterday, reported Harian Metro. Woman dies after bus crashes into car in Jempol
SEREMBAN: A 61-year-old woman was killed after the car she was in was hit by a bus at Km 9, Jalan Bahau-Rompin, Jempol, yesterday. Jempol district police chief Superintendent Norhisham Mustapar said the victim died on the spot due to serious head injuries. "The incident occurred when the bus, driven by a 65-year-old man and carrying five passengers heading from Rompin to Bahau is believed to have veered into the opposite lane. "At the same time, a 64-year-old man driving from the opposite direction with his wife (the victim) tried to swerve right to avoid the bus, but was hit on the car's front left side," he said. The victim's husband sustained light injuries, while the bus driver and all passengers were unhurt. The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
