85,000 students provided with uniforms, says Minister Muthusamy in Erode
Minister for Housing, Prohibition, and Excise, S. Muthusamy, said that 85,000 students studying in Classes VI to VIII were given uniforms as schools reopened in the district on Monday.
In the presence of Collector Raja Gopal Sunkara, Erode MP K.E. Prakash, MLA V.C. Chandhirakumar, and Mayor S. Nagarathinam, the Minister inaugurated a new building block and laboratories worth ₹2.50 crore at the Government Higher Secondary School in Nanjappa Goundan Valasu, Surampatti. The project was funded under the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative by Bengaluru-based Alice Blue Financial Services Private Limited, as part of the State government's 'Namma School – Namma Ooru Palli' scheme.
Addressing the media, the Minister said that special initiatives by the Education Department helped government schools, which were previously ranked among the bottom 30 positions in the previous public examination results, and that this had significantly improved their pass percentages, with some achieving centum results.
He noted that boys tend to score lower marks than girls in examinations and that this gap would be addressed. However, he acknowledged that girls' academic performance has been consistently improving year after year. He also assured that the distribution of uniforms to all students in the district would be completed in the coming days.
On the issue of POCSO cases, the Minister revealed that over 250 school-related incidents were reported last year and that immediate action was taken. 'This academic year, preventive measures will be implemented to ensure such issues do not recur,' he said.
Responding to AIADMK general secretary and Leader of the Opposition Edappadi K. Palaniswami's criticism that the DMK government failed to bring education under the State List, Mr. Muthusamy asserted that the government has been consistently advocating for shifting education from the Concurrent List to the State List. He questioned why, during the AIADMK's 10-year rule, no concrete steps were taken on the matter by the then Chief Minister.
Deputy Mayor V. Selvaraj, Chief Education Officer K. Subbarao, Headmaster N. Rajesh, and M. Sidhavelayutham, Founder and CEO of Alice Blue, along with several others, were present at the event.

Bengaluru: A demographic shift with far-reaching implications is unfolding in Karnataka, where seven districts—Udupi, Hassan, Mandya, Chamarajanagar, Ramanagara, Bengaluru Rural, and Chitradurga—have reported a higher number of deaths than births, according to the Civil Registration System (CRS) data released by the Centre for 2021. This reversal of the natural demographic trend, where birth rates typically outstrip death rates, marks a critical turning point for the state. In 2019, only three districts—Chamarajanagar, Mandya, and Ramanagara—had reported such a trend. The widening of this phenomenon to four additional districts reflects what experts call a silent but worrying demographic transition. Meanwhile, Dakshina Kannada (DK), along with 10 other districts, viz. Belagavi, Uttara Kannada, Dharwad, Gadag, Haveri, Davanagere, Chikkamagaluru, Tumakuru, Mysuru, and Bengaluru Urban, is now showing signs of stagnation. Although births still marginally exceed deaths in these districts, the growth margin is narrowing swiftly, pushing them towards a potential demographic tipping point. The trend stands in stark contrast to regions like Kalaburagi, Bidar, Yadgir, Raichur, and Koppal—part of the Kalyana Karnataka region—where higher birth rates continue to sustain population growth. However, even here, districts like Kolar, Chikkaballapur, Shivamogga, Ballari, Bagalkote, and Vijayapura are approaching similar stress zones in terms of birth-death ratios. The 2021 CRS report underscores that Karnataka is not alone. Across the country, 49 districts have recorded this inversion, with an overwhelming 34 located in south India. Karnataka contributes seven such districts to the list, while neighbouring Tamil Nadu accounts for 17. Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Puducherry make up the rest. 'This trend reflects both the success of socio-economic development and the challenges of a rapidly ageing population,' said a Bengaluru-based demographer. 'However, the implications are serious, ranging from labour shortages to shifts in policy priorities and fiscal allocations,' the report stated.

SAD chief Sukhbir dares Punjab CM Mann to prove foreign funding in Saraya Industries in which Majithia has shares
Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) president Sukhbir Singh Badal Saturday challenged Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann to prove that Saraya Industries Limited, in which party leader Bikram Singh Majithia holds an inherited 11 per cent share, had received even one rupia in foreign funding from 2007 to the present, rubbishing the allegations made in the Disproportionate Assets case registered against the Akali leader. Addressing a press conference here, Badal said, 'The only foreign funding received by Saraya Industries was in March 2006 (one year before SAD formed a government in Punjab) when it received Rs 35 crore from the US-based Clearwater Corporation in exchange for 25 per cent shares in the company. Majithia entered politics in 2007.' Badal said Clearwater Corporation, which had offices in several countries, had invested Rs 50,000 crore globally. 'All money invested by this company through the NBFC in Saraya Industries was done after due clearance from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and approval of the Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB).' Badal made it clear that 'all transactions of Saraya Industries were scrutinised and accepted by the Income Tax department. This clearly proves that claims of investment of Rs 540 crore in Saraya Industries through foreign funding are absurd and malicious, and being done with the sole purpose of defaming Majithia'. He also clarified that 'all cash transactions done by Saraya Industries while procuring sugarcane and conducting distillery business had also been scrutinised by the Income Tax department. Saraya Industries Ltd was a private limited company deemed to be a public limited company and was a different entity from Bikram Majithia and could not be associated with the latter. Majithia has no control over the company's day-to-day functioning.' Alleging that Mann 'pressured the state DGP to register a case against Majithia' because the latter was constantly exposing him and his corrupt and immoral Cabinet colleagues, the SAD president said, 'The chief minister rang up the DGP on the night of June 24 and threatened to remove him if he did not register a case against Majithia by the morning. Consequently, the DGP wrote to the Vigilance department to register a case against the Akali leader at 10.40 pm on June 24. Subsequently, a disproportionate assets case was registered against Majithia at 4.40 am on June 25.' Badal said, 'No investigation was done before registering the case. The Vigilance department did not deem it fit to issue a questionnaire to Majithia, a prerequisite before filing such a case. An affidavit which the government had submitted to the Supreme Court in 2023 while appealing for cancellation of the regular bail given to Majithia and seeking his custodial interrogation under the NDPS Act was used verbatim to register this new case against him.' 'This was done even though the Supreme Court rejected the affidavit in April this year and refused to overturn the regular bail given to Majithia by the high court or grant the request for custodial interrogation. The apex court even asked the AAP government to complete the probe in two days, following which it has now taken this new route to engage in political vendetta,' Badal alleged. The SAD president also condemned how retired officers were being used by the AAP government to defame Majithia. 'Former DGP Siddharth Chattopadhyaya is the same person who earlier registered a disproportionate assets case against former chief minister Parkash Singh Badal and him, and even travelled to several countries on government expenses to find evidence of foreign properties owned by the Badal family. The entire case fell flat due to a lack of any evidence. Retired enforcement director Niranjan Singh was being involved, but the Enforcement Directorate, which had given a clean chit to Majithia, was being kept out of the ambit of the case,' he claimed. Terming the entire case 'illegal and a wilful fabrication', Badal said, 'We will go to the people and expose the AAP government.' He claimed, 'The party has conclusive proof of the corrupt acts of Bhagwant Mann and his wife Dr Gurpreet Kaur as well as Patiala SSP Varun Sharma, who was handling all illegal transactions for them and will hold them accountable for the same once the SAD forms a government in the state.' He also questioned the formation of five SITs to probe the NDPS Act case against Majithia, adding present SIT head, Varun Sharma, was compromised due to his business links with the chief minister's family. He said similarly, another SIT member, Singh Bains, had been dismissed from service for five years on corruption charges. 'The truth is the AAP government failed to find drugs in the NDPS Act case and any illegal assets in the disproportionate assets case,' Badal added.
