Former Dewan Negara deputy president pleads not guilty to bribery charge involving luxury car
He entered the plea after the charge was read out to him before Judge Elesabet Paya Wan.
According to the charge sheet, Mohamad Ali is accused of corruptly accepting a Range Rover Sport from a company director as an inducement to award subcontract works for a land reclamation project in Kota Laksamana.
The alleged offence took place at the company's office in Taman Kota Syahbandar, Melaka Tengah, in June 2015.
The charge, under Section 16(a)(A) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act 2009, is punishable under Section 24(1) of the same Act, which carries up to 20 years' imprisonment and a fine of not less than five times the value of the bribe or RM10,000, whichever is higher.
Deputy public prosecutor Datuk Ahmad Akram Gharib urged the court to maintain the same bail conditions set by the Shah Alam Sessions Court on June 18 - namely RM60,000 bail with one surety, surrender of the accused's passport, and a prohibition on contacting prosecution witnesses.
He also applied for the case previously filed in Shah Alam to be transferred to Ayer Keroh so that both matters could be heard together.
Defence counsel Md Yunos Shariff raised no objection, and the court fixed August 14 for mention.
On June 18, Mohamad Ali had claimed trial in the Shah Alam Sessions Court to 20 charges of accepting RM235,000 in cash and three luxury cars in relation to the same reclamation project. — Bernama

Swaddled six-month-old baby reportedly dies at Melaka childcare centre, suspected suffocation
MELAKA, July 17 — A six-month-old baby boy reportedly died at a childcare centre in Padang Temu yesterday, believed to have suffocated after being found face down on a mattress while swaddled. According to Utusan Malaysia, the incident allegedly took place around 5pm, when a caregiver checked on the baby about an hour after putting him to sleep and found him unresponsive with a bluish face. Citing an anonymous source, the report stated that the baby was rushed to Klinik Utama Ujong Pasir, where medical staff performed CPR for 30 minutes before referring him to Hospital Melaka. The baby received further emergency treatment at the hospital's red zone but was later confirmed dead. A police report was lodged, and there were reportedly no signs of criminal elements found on the body. The case is reportedly being investigated under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001.

Man fined RM100,000 for illegal sand mining on Pahang state land in Raub
RAUB, July 17 — A man was fined RM100,000 by the Sessions Court, here, today, after he pleaded guilty to illegally extracting sand from Pahang government land in 2023. Chang Chee Onn, 67, made the plea before Judge Noor Zaihan Mohamad Ali, who also ordered him to serve six months in prison if he failed to pay the fine. The man later settled the amount. The court also ordered that the seized machinery - an excavator and two tipper lorries - be forfeited to the state government. Chang was charged with committing the offence of illegally extracting rock material, namely sand, on state government land in Sungai Ara, Mukim Gali, Raub, at about 2.45 pm on Dec 9, 2023. The charge was framed under Section 426(1) of the National Land Code (Revised 2020) Act 828, which carries a maximum fine of RM500,000, or imprisonment of up to five years, or both, upon conviction. During the proceedings, Pahang Enforcement Unit (UPNP) prosecuting officer, Muhammad Taqiuddin Azizan, urged the court to impose a proportionate and deterrent sentence, citing losses and revenue leakages from unpaid royalties for the extracted sand. However, the accused, who was unrepresented, pleaded for leniency, on the grounds that he had no permanent job and needed to support his wife and child. According to the facts of the case, inspections found that the accused had extracted river sand outside the approved permit area, and ordered his workers to move the material from state land into the permitted area. — Bernama
