Vietnam hosts a double celebration

Budapest Times05-05-2025
The Embassy of Vietnam in Hungary held a formal ceremony in the Pesti Vigadó in downtown Budapest on the evening of April 29, 2025, to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and Hungary (February 3, 1950-February 3, 2025) and the 50th anniversary of the Liberation of the South and National Reunification (April 30, 1975-April 30, 2025). More than 500 distinguished guests enjoyed a solemn and warm atmosphere.
The attendees included the First Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly of Hungary, Mrs. Márta Mátrai; Deputy Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, Mrs. Kovacs Katalin; Deputy Prosecutor General, Mr. Tibor Ibolya; Deputy State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Mr. Stifter Adam; President of the Hungary-Vietnam Friendship Association, Mr. Botz László; along with numerous senior officials, representatives of ministries and agencies, members of the diplomatic corps, Hungarian friends and the Vietnamese community in Hungary.
This occasion not only revisited the proud historical journey of bilateral relations, affirming the strong and traditional friendship between the two nations, but also instilled pride in the Vietnamese community in Hungary for their homeland's cause of national construction and defence. It further recalled the heroic and arduous struggle of the Vietnamese people, culminating in the great Spring Victory of 1975, which completely liberated the South and reunified the country, ushering Vietnam into a new era of independence, freedom, happiness, civilisation, prosperity and elevated international standing.
In his remarks, Ambassador Bui Le Thai emphasised that the 75-year diplomatic relationship has been a proud journey, nurtured by solidarity, trust and sustainable cooperation. He expressed deep gratitude for the valuable support extended by the Government and people of Hungary during Vietnam's struggle for independence and reunification, as well as in its current process of renovation and development.
The Ambassador affirmed that, despite geographical distance and ongoing global changes, the Party, Government and people of Vietnam always value and wish to further develop the traditional friendship and comprehensive partnership between the two countries. Looking back on half a century since the liberation and reunification of the country, Ambassador Bui Le Thai said it was not only a great victory of the Vietnamese nation but also a shining symbol of revolutionary heroism, the spirit of independence and resilience, great national unity, international solidarity and the truth that 'Nothing is more precious than independence and freedom… Today, Vietnam is entering a new era, a period of national revival marked by confidence, self-reliance and national pride,' he emphasised.
The Ambassador said Vietnam and Hungary will continue to write new chapters in their traditional friendship and comprehensive cooperation, with 75 years of history in friendly cooperation, a solid foundation of strong bilateral relations, high political trust between the two countries' leaderships, mutual understanding between the two peoples, shared values of peace, progress, and prosperity, and the determination from both sides.
On behalf of the Government and National Assembly of Hungary, First Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly Mrs. Márta Mátrai conveyed the warm congratulations of Mr. László Kövér, Speaker of the Hungarian National Assembly, and of the entire Parliament and Government of Hungary to the people of Vietnam on the double milestone being celebrated.
She congratulated Vietnam on its achievements since 1975 and expressed pride that Hungary had contributed to its struggle for national liberation, particularly through Hungary's participation in the International Commission of Control and Supervision (ICCS) from 1973 to 1975. Mrs. Mátrai highly appreciated the traditional multifaceted cooperation between the two countries, especially parliamentary cooperation — one of the key pillars of the bilateral relationship — through high-level visits, committee exchanges, and legislative experience-sharing dialogues.
She announced that Speaker Kövér has accepted an invitation to visit Vietnam, expected to be in October this year. She recognised the valuable contributions of the Vietnamese community in Hungary to the country's development and affirmed the Government and Parliament of Hungary will continue to create favourable conditions for their successful integration.
At the ceremony, Ambassador Bui Le Thai presented a special commemorative publication jointly produced by the Embassy of Vietnam in Hungary and Eurasia magazine to mark the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations.
In addition to the formal program, the celebration featured rich cultural experiences. The guests enjoyed traditional Vietnamese musical performances, cuisine and exhibitions, including a photo display and film screenings recounting the 75-year history of bilateral friendship and Vietnam's 50 years of national development.
The celebration left a profound impression on all attendees, hopefully inspiring both nations to continue jointly writing new chapters in their joint history.

Abraham Accords could guarantee long-term peace in Middle East, minister says

Péter Szijjártó, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, said the Abraham Accords signed during US President Donald Trump's first term should be expanded in order to guarantee long-term peace in the Middle East. 'The name of peace in the Middle East, as in Ukraine, is that of Donald Trump,' Minister Szijjártó said in New York on Wednesday. The Abraham Accords signed during Trump's first term led to Israel normalising its relations with several Arab countries after several decades of unsuccessful peace efforts, Minister Szijjártó said ahead of a UN Security Council meeting on the situation in the Middle East, according to a ministry statement. 'I believe the path to long-term peaceful life in the Middle East is through the renewal and expansion of the Abraham Accords,' the minister said. 'This is also very important for us, because the security of the Middle East has a significant impact on the security of Central Europe,' Minister Szijjártó said. 'If there's no security in the Middle East, then the migration waves heading towards Europe will always intensify. Right now, we're seeing these migration waves making their way through the land route, so they're a direct threat to Hungary.' Minister Szijjártó said another reason why peace in the Middle East was important for Hungary was that, as a Christian country, Hungary felt responsible for persecuted Christian communities there. Hungary's government has so far spent around 30 billion forints (EUR 75.1m) supporting Christian communities in the Middle East, which has included contributions to the Catholic Church's humanitarian and social programmes in the Gaza Strip, the minister said. He also expressed Hungary's support for a ceasefire and hostage deal in the Middle East, saying they would give those living in the region a chance at a more peaceful life and open the door for the release of the last Hungarian hostage 'One Hungarian hostage is still being held by Hamas, which is why we demand the immediate and unconditional release of the hostages,' Minister Szijjártó said. Meanwhile, Minister Szijjártó said that in addition to the UN forums, he will also hold economic talks as well as meetings with Saudi Arabia's economy minister and Serbia's minister in charge of gender equality. He said that because the European Union had so far been unable to sign a free trade deal with the Gulf Cooperation Council, it should hold talks with one Gulf country at a time in order to reach agreements with them as soon as possible.

FM: EU must work with countries that strengthen bloc's competitiveness

Péter Szijjártó, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, said the European Union must work together with countries such as Andorra that do not threaten but strengthen the bloc's competitiveness. Minister Szijjártó told a joint press conference with Andorra counterpart Imma Tor Faus that Hungary and Andorra 'represent similar positions' regarding the problems that currently burden the world. 'Both have a vested interest in international politics returning to the basis of mutual trust since, failing that, there will be negative consequences for countries of a modest size,' a ministry statement quoted him as saying. 'When I visited Andorra last year, my goal was to prepare for the Hungarian presidency of the Council of the European Union. Unfortunately, I must say that the symptoms of an ailing Europe at the time, such as the dangerous security situation, extreme energy security challenges and the dramatic decrease in competitiveness, are currently even worse,' he added. Minister Szijjártó said the EU was steadily weakening as a result of a series of mistakes by Brussels. The minister said both Hungary and Andorra had an interest in an EU that aided the performance of national economies instead of putting countries under 'political pressure'. 'Instead of suppressing national characteristics, it should strengthen them,' he added. The EU could grow stronger by strengthening ties with countries that improve cooperation with member states, he said, adding that Andorra was an 'excellent example' of this and the reason why Hungary urged the EU to finally sign the accession agreement, given that the talks are already completed. 'Clearly, Andorra's economic performance would contribute to the EU's economic performance,' he said.

State Secretary: EU must take action against forced conscription in Ukraine and the death of József Sebestyén

State Secretary Bence Rétvári said the European Union must take action against forced conscription in Ukraine and regarding the death of József Sebestyén. Before a meeting of the bloc's Justice and Home Affairs Council in Copenhagen on Tuesday, the parliamentary state secretary noted that migration would be the main topic of the meeting, where he would continue to press Hungary's case that its southern border fence 'is the solution' and 'Hungary will not accept illegal migrants'. In a video uploaded to his social media page, he said he would also raise Sebestyén's case since EU interior ministers should grasp that 'our Hungarian compatriot József Sebestyén was brutally beaten during forced conscription in Ukraine' as the case concerned an EU citizen as well as a Hungarian one. 'The Hungarian government has taken action; the European Union must follow suit,' he said. Regarding migration, he said ministers would be mulling 'innovative proposals for managing migration'. 'We have a 10-year innovative proposal: the southern border fence and the requirement that all procedures are carried out outside the territory of the EU. More and more people agreed with the Hungarian government on this score, he said. Yet the European Commission 'is still deaf to these proposals', preferring instead the forced distribution of migrants based on quotas, so that as many countries as possible agree to accept as many migrants as possible. Rétvári said only 9 out of the 27 member states had responded to the commission's call to accept migrants.
