Vinnie Pasquantino, Royals salvage split with Mariners
Seth Lugo (6-5) pitched 6 1/3 strong innings for the Royals, who won for just the third time in 12 games. The right-hander allowed one run on six hits with two walks and seven strikeouts.
Carlos Estevez got the final four outs for his 24th save of the season despite a harrowing ninth.
Dominic Canzone led off with a homer to straightaway center to pull Seattle within a run.
Pinch hitter Miles Mastrobuoni blooped a hit to right, and J.P. Crawford lined a one-out single to left, with a wild pitch advancing both runners. Estevez caught Julio Rodriguez looking at a called third strike and got Cal Raleigh, the American League Player of the Month for June, to ground out feebly to second to end the game.
Seattle's Jorge Polanco went 3-for-4 with two doubles and a homer leading off the fourth inning that opened the scoring.
The Royals trailed 1-0 heading into the seventh before scoring three times.
Kyle Isbel and Jonathan India drew one-out walks off reliever Casey Legumina (4-4), who was replaced by Carlos Vargas. Bobby Witt Jr. greeted Vargas with a line-drive single to left-center, knocking in Isbel with the tying run as India advanced to third. Witt stole second, and Pasquantino grounded a single to right against a drawn-in infield to plate two more runs.
Mariners starter Logan Evans, recalled from Triple-A Tacoma earlier in the day, pitched 5 2/3 scoreless innings. The right-hander allowed three hits, walked one and fanned three.
Evans retired the side in order in each of the first three innings before walking India leading off the fourth. After striking out Witt, Evans grazed Pasquantino on the back foot with a pitch and Maikel Garcia grounded a single to left to load the bases. Evans got Salvador Perez to pop out and John Rave to ground out, ending the inning.
Evans was replaced after allowing a two-out double to Perez in the sixth, with Legumina issuing a walk before Nick Loftin flied out to right to complete the inning.

Catcher-needy Orioles acquire Alex Jackson from Yankees
July 6 - The Baltimore Orioles acquired minor league catcher Alex Jackson from the New York Yankees on Sunday, agreeing to send international bonus pool money and either a player to be named later or cash considerations. He was added to the major league roster. Jackson was the No. 6 overall pick of the Seattle Mariners in the 2014 MLB Draft and has a career batting average of .132 in 124 games with the Atlanta Braves, Miami Marlins, Milwaukee Brewers and Tampa Bay Rays. He has six career home runs and 24 RBIs and thrown out 29.1 percent (16 of 55) potential base stealers. The 29-year-old will provide depth at the position for the Orioles, who lost starter Adley Rutschman through at least the All-Star break due to the left oblique strain that sent him to the injured list for the first time in his career. Catchers Maverick Handley (concussion) and Chadwick Tromp (back) also are sidelined, and veteran Gary Sanchez left Saturday night's game against the Atlanta Braves with knee pain after making a play at the plate. Sanchez was placed on the 10-day injured list with a right knee sprain on Sunday. At Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre this season, Jackson hit .226 with 31 runs, seven doubles, one triple, 10 home runs and 34 RBIs in 44 games. He threw out 26.3 percent (10 of 38) of runners attempting to steal a base. --Field Level Media

USA Olympic hero opens up on PTSD after suffering gruesome injuries in traumatic crash
Olympic hero Mikaela Shiffrin has opened up on the traumatic injuries she sustained during her horror crash last year that has left her suffering with PTSD even months later. The Team USA skier, 30, had to be stretchered off the slopes in Vermont after doing a flip and careening into the protective barriers during the Killington Cup on November 30, 2024. Shiffrin, who was chasing her 100th World Cup win, had been leading before she lost control near the finish line, slid into a gate, flipped head over skis, and collided with another gate before stopping in protective fencing. She suffered a five-centimeter puncture wound to her hip area, which she has now revealed narrowly avoided her colon by one millimeter. But the skiing star admitted the crash took more than a physical toll, as she detailed the mental health struggles she's had to endure over the past seven months. 'It's just been a process to recover from that physically, and mentally, more-so than I maybe expected,' Shiffrin told People. 'I was having a lot of actual PTSD symptoms.' *WARNING - GRAPHIC CONTENT BELOW* Shiffrin, 30, took a scary fall during her second Giant Slalom run at the Women's World Cup She opened up on the mental health woes, revealing the symptoms included 'flashbacks' and 'intrusive thoughts that were pretty challenging,' especially as she prepared for her return to the slopes in January. Shiffrin previously explained that she had been 'impaled' during the scary incident when she shared a snap of her bruised hips and pelvis, and even a video of the hole in her side as it was tended to by a nurse at the hospital, with her followers in December. However, even months later, Shiffrin admitted that she still isn't entirely certain how the crash occurred. 'That's the million-dollar question,' she told People. 'I crashed into a gate, and we think that maybe it was either impact or a portion of some part of the gate somehow managed to create the effect of a stab wound and it went right in here.' When the incident occurred, Shiffrin was leading after the first run of the GS and charging after her 100th World Cup win. She was within sight of the finish line, five gates onto Killington's steep finish pitch, when she lost the grip on her outside ski. She hit a gate and did a somersault before sliding into another gate. The fencing slowed her momentum as she came to an abrupt stop. Shiffrin stayed down on the edge of the course for quite some time as the ski patrol attended to her. She was taken off the hill on a sled and waved to the cheering crowd. The American has not suffered as many devastating injuries as many ski racers have. In her 14-year career, she has only had to rehab two injuries that happened on the hill: a torn medial collateral ligament and bone bruising in her right knee in December 2015 and a sprained MCL and tibiofibular ligament in her left knee after a downhill crash in January 2024. Neither knee injury required surgery and both times Shiffrin was back to racing within two months. Shiffrin went on to secure her historic 100th World Cup win on the slopes of Sestriere in February following her comeback. She took that tally to 101 in March when she clinched another victory at the Sun Valley Finals. To date, she has earned five overall World Cup titles, two Olympic gold medals - along with a silver - and seven world championships.
