Pakistan names Qatari royal as brand ambassador after ‘Killer Mountain' climb

Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has appointed Qatari royal and elite mountaineer Sheikha Asma Al Thani as the country's Brand Ambassador for Mountains and Tourism, following her historic summit of Nanga Parbat.
The announcement came shortly after Sheikha Asma became the first Qatari woman to scale the 8,126-metre peak, which is located in Pakistan's Gilgit-Baltistan region and is known as one of the world's most dangerous.
Her appointment is seen as both a diplomatic gesture and a strategic move to promote Pakistan's mountain ranges as a global destination for high-altitude adventure.
In a statement posted on social media platform X, Sharif praised Sheikha Asma's achievement as a 'powerful message of courage and determination' and a symbol of the enduring ties between Pakistan and Qatar.
'I am pleased to appoint Her Highness Sheikha Asma Al Thani as the Brand Ambassador for Pakistan's Mountains and Tourism,' he wrote. 'Her recent achievement of summiting Nanga Parbat is truly inspiring. It stands as a testament to resilience and showcases the immense potential of Pakistan's mountain tourism.'
Known for its treacherous conditions, Nanga Parbat has long held the ominous nickname 'Killer Mountain.' Just last week, Czech mountaineer Klára Kolouchová, 46, died during an expedition on the same peak.
For Sheikha Asma, the summit marked her ninth successful ascent of the world's 14 peaks over 8,000 metres.
'Alhamdulillah, Nanga Parbat. My ninth 8000er and one of the toughest climbs I've faced,' she wrote on Instagram. 'This mountain tested me in ways I didn't expect… a constant reminder of how fragile life truly is.'
'There was surrender, and there was strength I didn't know I still had. I climb not just to reach summits, but to return to what matters,' she added.

Egypt begins language exams for tour guides to expand linguistic accreditations - Tourism

Egypt's Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities has launched a new round of language exams for licensed tour guides, allowing them to add one or more foreign languages—including rare ones—to their professional licenses. The move aims to improve multilingual tourism services, diversify visitor markets, and reduce reliance on translation permits granted to foreign interpreters. As of 2025, Egypt has around 14,000 licensed tour guides, according to an official from the Egyptian General Tourist Guide Syndicate. The ministry announced Monday that licensed guides can now apply for the language addition tests via the Central Administration of Corporate Services Portal, with applications open through 31 July 2025. Exams will be held at the Faculty of Tourism and Hotels at Helwan University, where candidates will be evaluated by university professors and representatives from foreign embassies to ensure language proficiency before accreditations are granted. According to the ministry, 225 applications were received for this round, and 58 candidates passed. Successful guides were certified in a range of languages, including Portuguese, Turkish, Japanese, Czech, Indonesian, Korean, Greek, Romanian, and Hungarian—languages still underrepresented in Egypt's tourism workforce. The ministry is also running intensive training programmes for aspiring tour guides with relevant academic backgrounds. More than 300 individuals received training in the first half of 2025 alone. The initiative is part of Egypt's broader strategy to grow its tourism sector and expand its capacity to serve an increasingly diverse global audience. The government aims to attract 30 million visitors annually by 2028 under a comprehensive national tourism strategy. Follow us on: Facebook Instagram Whatsapp Short link:

MotoGP: Jorge Martin returns to MotoGP racing at revamped Brno - Omni sports

Reigning world champion Jorge Martin of Spain will return to racing at the Czech MotoGP this weekend as the Brno circuit hosts its first grand prix since 2020. Marc Marquez is threatening to run away with the title after four straight wins, which have allowed the Spaniard to open up a sizeable gap at the top. The 32-year-old factory Ducati rider has 344 points after 11 of 22 races, and he has won both the sprint and the main race on seven occasions. His younger brother Alex, on a Gresini Ducati, is second with 261 points, ahead of Marc's Italian teammate Francesco Bagnaia -- the 2022 and 2023 world champion -- with 197. But it is Martin, who has yet to score his first point this season, that will likely steal the limelight on the circuit in the second Czech city of Brno. Martin sat out the first three races following two pre-season crashes and when he returned at Qatar in April, he crashed heavily again and missed the next seven races. "I feel prepared. In terms of the physical condition, I feel better than any time in my life for sure," the 27-year-old Martin said having recovered from 11 broken ribs. "I took profit of this time off to work on my performance, and I feel I am a better and more prepared rider now," he added. "I don't want to speculate on results... What I can say is that I'm here to compete, I'm not here to make laps. I'm here to do my best." Martin also said on Thursday he would stay with Aprilia for the 2026 season, dispelling doubts about his future. He had been at odds with the Italian manufacturer after initially saying he intended to activate a release clause in his contract at the end of the season. Brno is returning to the MotoGP calendar for the first time since 2020 after years of financial woes. 'Two seconds faster' Marquez, who stretched his championship lead after a perfect weekend at the Sachsenring in Germany, hailed Martin's return. "Good for MotoGP, good for the championship, good for Aprilia and especially good for him to be back on track," he told "Of course it will take time. You never know with Martin, but he will be fast in the second part of the season." Marquez has won three MotoGP races at Brno, in 2013, 2017 and 2019, but he sat out the last edition in 2020 with a broken arm as Brad Binder stunned the pack to take his maiden MotoGP win. Marquez holds the fastest lap time of 1min 54.596sec from 2016 and will be looking to improve it on the resurfaced 5.4-kilometre track as forecasters promise a mostly sunny weekend. "It looks like some manufacturers tested two or three weeks ago and yeah, it looks like they were already two seconds faster," Marquez said. He is eyeing his seventh MotoGP world title -- and first since 2019 -- that would put him level with the legendary Valentino Rossi. Maverick Vinales, recovering from a shoulder fracture, will be replaced by Pol Espargaro at Brno, while Franco Morbidelli is also out following a bone-crunching crash in Germany. The MotoGP circus will take a summer break after this weekend and resume with the Austrian GP on August 15-17.
