VCK hopes to convince DMK govt. to enact law against caste hatred crimes
The Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi is hopeful that it could prevail upon the DMK government to enact a legislation to deal with crimes driven by caste hatred in the next Assembly session, against the backdrop of the recent murder of a Scheduled Caste youth, Kavin Selvaganesh, in Tirunelveli district. Earlier, Chief Minister M.K. Stalin had contended in the Assembly that existing laws were adequate to deal with such crimes. VCK sources said the party had been working diligently behind the scenes to convince the DMK leadership to enact a special legislation. At the same time, a section felt the State government was lenient in implementing laws to protect the Scheduled Castes, and wondered why the DMK didn't think of the community as a 'vote bank' like the OBCs. VCK general secretary D. Ravikumar told The Hindu that while the DMK government had introduced significant development schemes that benefit the Scheduled Caste communities directly and indirectly, it cannot ignore the constitutional duty of protecting them. 'The government has ensured development of Scheduled Castes in terms of their education and encouraging entrepreneurship. It has created infrastructure, introduced scholarships for Dalits, and these schemes will have a long-lasting impact. It has also introduced entrepreneurship schemes such as Dr. Annal Ambedkar Business Champions Scheme, besides reserving government contracts for SCs. Even reserved Panchayats have their own special schemes for development. Other welfare schemes – Magalir Urimai Thogai, free bus travel, Pudhumai Penn – overwhelmingly benefit Scheduled Castes and Most Backward Classes,' he said. However, he felt development without ensuring equality was pointless. Mr. Ravikumar said the continuation of atrocities and caste killings will stop the development initiatives of the State government. 'Economic or educational development may be a choice of the government, but the State government is bound to ensure equality constitutionally,' he said.

Tamil Nadu govt. urges Madras HC to exempt ‘Ungaludan Stalin' and ‘Nalam Kaakum Stalin' schemes from prohibitory order
The Tamil Nadu government has approached the Madras High Court urging it to clarify that its interim order prohibiting the use of the name of any living personality in the nomenclature of government schemes would not be applicable to 'Ungaludan Stalin' and 'Nalam Kaakum Stalin' schemes. Chief Justice Manindra Mohan Shrivastava and Justice Sunder Mohan on Thursday (August 3, 2025) accepted a request made by Advocate General P.S. Raman for an early hearing of the modification petition since the Nalam Kaakum Stalin scheme was all set to be launched across the State on Saturday (August 2, 2025). The judges said, the petition, if filed by Friday, would be taken up for hearing on Monday (August 4, 2025). Within a couple of hours, a modification plea was filed by the State government in the High Court Registry along with a detailed affidavit sworn by Public department secretary Reeta Harish Thakkar. The affidavit said the public outreach programme titled 'Ungaludan Stalin' had been in operation for quite sometime now and even the public interest litigation petitioner Shanmugam, in whose case the interim order was passed, had not sought any ex-parte interim order against that scheme. Similarly, a Government Order for the Nalam Kaakum Stalin scheme, aimed at taking healthcare to the doorsteps of the beneficiaries, was issued on June 3, 2025 itself, the Public Secretary said, and contended that only the launch was scheduled to be held on August 2, 2025 by conducting health camps in all districts. Further, stating that the pamphlets, brochures, application forms and other related documents for the scheme had already been printed, Ms. Thakkar said, enormous efforts taken to launch the scheme on Saturday would go waste if the prohibitory interim order was made applicable to it. 'The scheme has been introduced in the name honourable Chief Minister who is a constitutional authority and it cannot be construed to have been introduced in the name of a political personality. Usage of photos of former Chief Ministers is also not expressly prohibited by the Supreme Court,' her affidavit read. Stating that the government was prepared to contest the main PIL petition by filing a detailed counter affidavit, the secretary said: 'The present petition is being filed for the limited purpose of seeking clarification so that the order may not be applicable to the Nalam Kaakum Stalin scheme that is being launched tomorrow.'

Sanitation workers given welfare assistance in Sivaganga
Through the Tamil Nadu Sanitation Workers Welfare Board nine sanitation workers were provided with ₹96,000 worth assistances during an event here on Friday. Thippampatti V. Aruchami, Chairman of the Tamil Nadu Sanitation Workers Welfare Board, said, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has ordered for allocation of ₹60 crore to the board. He made a point that unlike other departments, the unutilised funds from the board could not be diverted for any other purposes. 'The fund will be exclusively used for the welfare of the sanitation workers,' he added. Through the board, the workers have made requests to conduct grievance redressal meeting periodically and to increase the monthly wage to the workers, he noted. Also, Government Order 62, mandating minimum wages for National Urban Livelihood Mission (NULM) temporary sanitation workers, should be immediately implemented, said Mr. Aruchamy. Other requests like increasing the overseas education assistance up to ₹35 lakh for children of sanitation workers were made to the board, he noted. 'The board also instructed the workers to utilise the safety gears provided to them. They were also directed not to get into any manholes even when someone asks them to,' he added. He said, as per the district administration's plea, the board would work towards providing five robotic machines for manhole cleaning purposes. In the last four years in Sivaganga district alone, ₹6.4 lakh worth welfare assistances were provided to about 127 sanitation workers that included educational assistance, death compensation and safety gears, he said. District Collector K. Porkodi, Manamadurai MLA A. Tamilarasi Ravikumar, among others were present during the event.
