Celtic to get Como Cup surprise as local Italian group prepare hero's welcome for Brendan Rodgers and Co
A group of diehard Celtic fans based in Italy are planning to show the world just how much they love the Hoops when Brendan Rodgers and Co roll into Lombardy for the Como Cup later this month.
The Parkhead giants will compete in a four-team tournament alongside Ajax, Al-Ahli of the Saudi Pro League and hosts Como in the first edition of the new Football on The Lake Festival.
Celtic face Eredivisie side Ajax in a semi-final clash on July 24, with the winners going onto take on the victors of the other last four tie three days later – a tie that could see Nicolas Kuhn face off with the Hoops if his £17.2m move goes through as expected.
The losers of the two games will also contest a third-place play-off on July 26.
The tournament in the scenic town will give Hoops fans the chance to sample what the scenic Italian city of Como has to offer, with the Serie A side's Giuseppe Sinigaglia stadium just a few steps away from the famous Lake Como.
And those making the journey from further afield are set to be welcomed by Parkhead fanatics from the Lecco Celtic supporter's club.
A group of 25 supporters will make the short trip to Como from nearby Lecco to help generate an atmosphere ahead of the tournament. The Lecco fan group founded in 2019 are one of five officially recognised Celtic supporters clubs' in Italy.
The fan group are based in Lecco's Shamrock Irish Pub and are said to have organised five nights of music from Irish artists Richie Prendergast and Eimehar Rebel to give fans making the trip an authentic experience.
Briefs for the matches are not particularly cheap, with supporters in the Celtic designated areas of the stadium having to fork out €35 (£30) to see their team up close.
And while other Celtic supporters' clubs in the country are believed to have turned their noses down at the prices for the tournament, Lecco fan group president Paolo Gulisano insists his party could not pass up the opportunity to show their love for their team.
Speaking to LeccoToday, he said: "As soon as we learned of Celtic's participation in the Como Cup, we took action to organize ourselves and to not miss our contribution to the team.
"Seeing Celtic on our lake will be a unique opportunity and we certainly could not be discouraged by an objectively high price for a summer friendly."
Ahead of their trip to Italy, Celtic are over in Ireland next Tuesday (July 8) to take on Cork City. Rodgers' side will then venture to Lisbon to face Sporting eight days later before welcoming Newcastle to Celtic Park on Saturday, July 19.

Luke McCowan hopes his improvement at Celtic can lead to maiden Scotland call-up
Celtic midfielder Luke McCowan aims to take his game up a level this season and finally force his way into the Scotland squad. The 27-year-old earned a move to Parkhead last summer after excelling for Dundee and has been touted for international recognition in recent seasons. Despite featuring in 41 matches for the Scottish champions last term, McCowan has yet to be called up by Steve Clarke. 'Of course, if it comes along, I'd be absolutely honoured to go and put that top on and represent my country,' he said. 'Just now, it's not happening. But if I play well enough in the times ahead, I'm sure it'll hopefully come along. 'Listen, it's not something that I'm totally focused on, I'm focused on Celtic, but if that was to come along, I'd be absolutely delighted.' McCowan believes a Scotland call-up is well within his grasp if he can build on his first season at Celtic. 'It's an aim for anybody playing at a club this size, to go and play for your national team,' he said. 'I just need to keep doing what I have been doing and I if I can add numbers and more game time in the league this year, hopefully it'll come around. 'I have something to offer at Celtic, so why can't I do it with Scotland? I'm sure at some point, if I was to keep the level I have been doing here, it'll come along. And if it does, then I'll come out with open arms and be delighted with it.' McCowan, who started 14 games for Celtic last term, is confident he can show further improvement in his game and feature more prominently in the season ahead. 'If you don't think like that, there's no point in continuing,' he said. 'I just need to keep learning. I need to keep doing it and hope that this season can be even bigger than the one last year. 'It's about repeating it and probably doing better than what I did again. Adding more numbers again and more creativity, whatever it may be. 'It's about using the good of last year and then trying to improve the bits that maybe weren't so good for myself and getting them better for the season ahead.' Premier League icon 'vetoes Serie A move for Jamie Vardy after deal was agreed for former Leicester striker'
Jamie Vardy will not be joining a Serie A side after their Premier League great of a manager vetoed the move, according to a report. Vardy brought an end to his legendary Leicester career at the end of the season, netting his 200th goal for the club in his final game. The 38-year-old has made it clear that he has no plans to retire and has been linked with a move to Genoa in recent weeks. However, the Italian media claim that move will not be taking place with the club's manager stepping in to shut it down. Genoa's boss is Arsenal icon Patrick Vieira, a key member of the historic 'Invincibles' side of 2004. And La Repubblica claim that Vardy was closing in on a switch to Genoa after the expiration of his Foxes contract. They say that won't be happening with Vieira unconvinced by the former England striker and overruling the move. Genoa sporting director Flavio Ricciardella was working on the deal with Vardy with sponsors due to cover his wage with the Serie A side. Vardy now looks likely to continue his career in Scotland with Rangers leading the race for his signature. Como and Nottingham Forest have also been linked with the Premier League veteran, who won 26 caps for England. After finishing his playing career at Man City, Vieira's first managerial post was at New York City FC. The Major League Soccer side are part of City Football Group founded by Man City owner Sheikh Mansour. Vieira won many admirers during his two-and-a-half-year stint with NYCFC, guiding to the club from 17th in 2015 to a fourth-place finish in his first season and then second the following year. The Arsenal 'Invincible' was even tipped to replace Arsene Wenger when the Gunners' boss left the Emirates in 2018. Instead, Vieira went to Ligue 1 club Nice where he achieved seventh and fifth-placed finishes during his two full seasons which persuaded Crystal Palace to make him Roy Hodgson's successor in 2021. His stint at Selhurst Park start well as he led the Eagles to a 12th-placed finish in his first season, earning praise for an attacking style. Things declined sharply in his second season, however, and he was sacked after a run of 12 games without a win with the club scoring just 21 goals in 27 matches. Vieira then served just one year of a three-year deal at Strasbourg before stepping down and taking up his position at Genoa four months later.
