He affirmed China's readiness to work closely with Pakistan to implement the strategic consensus reached by the leader-ship of both countries, deepen bilateral cooperation, and jointly promote peace and stability in the region. General Munir, in turn, reaffirmed Pakistan's deep appreciation for Chi-na's long-standing and consistent support toward its socio-economic de-velopment. He reiterated the Pakistani military's firm commitment to en-suring the safety and security of Chinese nationals and enterprises in Pakistan. He also emphasized Pakistan's resolve to strengthen counter-terrorism cooperation with China as part of their shared vision for region-al peace and prosperity. Both sides exchanged views on key regional and international develop-ments and agreed to continue close coordination on matters of mutual concern.

Punjab, China agree to boost agri cooperation
LAHORE: The Punjab Agriculture Department on Thursday hosted a high-level consultative session with representatives of 18 leading Chinese companies to enhance collaboration in agriculture between China and Punjab. The Chinese delegation, led by Guo Yuguo, included prominent companies such as Weifang Shengchuan, JOTEC, Weichai Lovol, PAISET, and SAIC. The meeting took place at Agriculture House, Lahore, and aimed to explore joint initiatives in agricultural mechanisation, smart farming, and digitalisation. Punjab Minister for Agriculture and Livestock Syed Ashiq Hussain Kirmani and Secretary Agriculture Punjab Iftikhar Ali Sahoo welcomed the delegation and reiterated the province's commitment to modernising its agricultural sector. In his address, Minister Kirmani said the Punjab government, under the vision of the chief minister, is offering subsidies on modern machinery and launching leasing schemes to revolutionise agriculture in the province. 'China is a global leader in agri-tech, and Punjab is keen to benefit from its expertise,' he said, inviting Chinese investment in local agriculture. He described Punjab as the 'food basket of Pakistan' and underscored the importance of adopting advanced farming technologies. Secretary Agriculture Iftikhar Ali Sahoo noted that all possible resources are being mobilised to ensure farmers have access to modern machinery. He lauded the Chinese companies' presentations and called the session 'highly informative.' He added that the Government of Punjab, through the Bank of Punjab, is offering interest-free loans to farmers for purchasing modern equipment. Major General Shahid Nazir (retd), Director General Strategic Projects, emphasised the government's focus on providing advanced harvesters, drones, and precision tools under the Green Pakistan Initiative. He stressed the value of Chinese expertise in agricultural engineering and smart farming to propel Punjab's growth. During the session, Chinese company representatives gave detailed briefings on a wide range of agricultural machinery, from small-scale tools like power tillers and mini harvesters to large-scale equipment such as combine harvesters and multifunctional tractors. Smart technologies, including IoT-enabled devices and autonomous tractors, were also introduced. The meeting was attended by Special Secretary Agriculture Agha Nabeel Akhtar, Additional Secretary (Admin) Ijaz Munir, Director Generals Agriculture (Information) Naveed Asmat Kahloon, Ch Abdul Hameed, Engineer Sajid Naseer, and Project Director Dr Anjum Ali. Xi warns EU leaders to ‘make correct strategic choices'
BEIJING: Chinese President Xi Jinping urged top European Union officials on Thursday to 'properly handle differences and frictions' as he criticised Brussels's recent trade actions against Beijing at a tense summit dominated by concerns on trade and the Ukraine war. Expectations were low for the summit in the Chinese capital marking 50 years of diplomatic ties after weeks of escalating tension and wrangling that led to the duration being abruptly halved to a single day at Beijing's request. 'The current challenges facing Europe do not come from China,' Xi told visiting European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President Antonio Costa, state news agency Xinhua said. He urged the EU to 'adhere to open cooperation and properly handle differences and frictions', after von der Leyen earlier called for a rebalancing of trade ties with the world's second largest economy, saying relations were at an 'inflection point'. 'Improving competitiveness cannot rely on 'building walls and fortresses',' Xi added, according to Xinhua. ''Decoupling and breaking chains' will only result in isolation.' 'It is hoped that the European side will keep the trade and investment market open and refrain from using restrictive economic and trade tools,' Xi said. EU trade actions in the past year have targeted Chinese exports of electric vehicles among other goods, and its officials have repeatedly complained about Chinese industrial overcapacity. Xi also warned EU leaders to 'make correct strategic choices', in a further veiled criticism of Brussels' recent hawkish stance on China. 'As our cooperation has deepened, so have imbalances,' von der Leyen told Xi during their meeting in Beijing's Great Hall of the People, according to a pool report. 'We have reached an inflection point,' she added, urging China to 'come forward with real solutions'. She was referring to the EU's trade deficit with China, which ballooned to a historic 305.8 billion euros ($360 billion) last year. 'We think increasing market access for European companies in China, limiting the external impact of involution, and reducing export controls are important steps forward,' von der Leyen told Premier Li Qiang later, according to a pool report. She described her meeting with Xi as 'excellent'. The two sides also issued a joint statement on climate, reiterating their commitment to new climate action plans across the whole economy. They will boost cooperation in areas such as energy transition, adaptation, methane emissions management and control, carbon markets and green and low-carbon technologies, the joint statement said. At the start of US President Donald Trump's second term, both sides had more of a consensus in working together to tackle trade challenges from the United States, said Cui Hongjian, a foreign policy professor at Beijing Foreign Studies University. 'Recently the situation has changed,' Cui said. 'The EU has continued to compromise with the United States, which means that there is currently a lack of impetus for EU-China ties to become closer.'
