Cellphones stolen at Bok game: Gauteng duo to appear in Mpumalanga court
An otherwise pleasant and well-organised rugby match left some supporters as the unfortunate victims of opportunistic theft.
According to Lowvelder, Mpumalanga SAPS confirmed that two suspects were arrested at the stadium on Saturday and are expected to appear in the Nelspruit Magistrate's Court today.
'We can confirm that the two suspects were found at the stadium in possession of seven cellphones, believed to be stolen,' said provincial police spokesperson Brigadier Donald Mdhluli.
'The suspects both hail from Gauteng, and their arrest will be a lesson to others who believe Mpumalanga is a playground for thieves and robbers,' he added.
The suspects were charged with theft and unlawful possession of suspected stolen property.
Following reports of theft at the fixture, Lowvelder asked readers on its Facebook page about their experience. Several said their cellphones were stolen during the match.
Mdhluli said detectives have identified the lawful owners of four of the recovered phones. The remaining devices are yet to be claimed.
Police investigations are ongoing.

Not the first child: What happened to Tiffany Meek's newborn baby?
Tiffany Meek – the mother of Jayden-Lee Meek – lost her first child, a newborn baby boy, years before he was conceived. The circumstances of the infant's death have resurfaced amid her charges of murder, defeating the ends of justice and crimen injuria. Jayden-Lee's body was discovered just metres away from his doorstep on the morning of 14 May. He had suffered a blunt force head injury. In a TikTok video posted earlier this year, Tiffany Meek paid tribute to her firstborn son, Kaiyle Levi Dunn, who was born on 10 August 2012. Sadly, the baby boy died just two days later. 'Gone, but not forgotten', she captioned the clip. According to an affidavit, Tiffany gave birth to the baby when she was 18 years old. It's unclear what the infant's cause of death is. @tiffs_dunn One Sweet Day indeed. #foreverinmyheart👼💔 ♬ One Sweet Day – Mariah Carey & Boyz II Men Sometime later, Tiffany met and married Leandro Meek, and the couple welcomed Jayden-Lee in 2014. According to her statement, she has been separated from her husband since 2022. She is now in a relationship with another man. Following Jayden-Lee's death, Tiffany Meek and a group of family and friends held a memorial service, where they released balloons into the sky in memory of him. Holding on to her balloon a little longer, she could be heard saying a clip posted on social media: 'I know you're dancing with your brother. And watching over us every day because that is the type of child that you are'. She added: 'I'll miss you'. @renew_u #justiceforjayden ♬ original sound – ReneW🏳️🌈🌈🇿🇦 Let us know by leaving a comment below, or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 021 1 . [Videos] Roodepoort mother accused of killing son: Police describe chilling evidence
The bail application of Tiffany Nicole Meek (31), the mother accused of murdering her 11-year-old son, Jayden-Lee Meek, will continue tomorrow after a day of shocking evidence was presented in the Roodepoort Magistrate's Court. Roodepoort Record reports that during today's court appearance, a state witness, a detective from the Florida police who is also the investigating officer in the case, took the stand and detailed the events from the time Jayden-Lee was reported missing to the arrest of his mother. According to his testimony, the deceased's school bag, shoes and red school jacket were found at Unit 13, where Meek resides. It was further revealed that Jayden-Lee's body was discovered shortly after Meek left the complex in the early hours of May 14 at about 05:00. 'When officers observed the deceased's body at Discovery Clinic, they noticed injuries to the forehead, chin and lips, which were bleeding. The deceased also had bruises on the neck, arms and right leg,' the detective testified. He added that a pillow found in Meek's unit contained blood droplets. These were sealed for forensic testing and later confirmed to match the deceased's blood. 'After the post-mortem, it was revealed that the cause of death was a blunt force injury to the head,' he said. Meek's affidavit, read by her defence attorney Noven Naidoo, claimed that police officers had refused to search her unit because they lacked a search warrant. However, the investigating officer disputed this. 'The accused kept diverting police officers to other locations and refused to let them near her unit. In a case as sensitive as this, police would have proceeded with a search even without a warrant,' he explained. 'It also doesn't make sense that the accused spent the night at her mother's house when she knew the child was missing and could have returned at any time.' Unlike previous appearances, proceedings were calmer, with no demonstrations outside the court. Meek remains in custody. Owen Meek, cousin of Jayden-Lee Meek's father, briefed the community on how they feel. Meta hands over user data in SA child pornography case
After a week of intense litigation, tech giant Meta has agreed to provide crucial user information, including phone numbers, IP addresses, names and physical addresses, linked to Instagram and WhatsApp accounts involved in distributing explicit child pornography. According to The Witness, this follows a ruling by Judge Mudunwazi Makamu in the Gauteng Division of the High Court in Johannesburg, compelling Meta to hand over the data. In addition, Meta has deleted 12 WhatsApp channels and 58 Instagram accounts found to be sharing sexually explicit content involving minors. The Digital Law Company (DLC), led by social media law expert Emma Sadleir, spearheaded the urgent legal application to protect South African children from digital exploitation. Sadleir said multiple channels and accounts had been posting various forms of explicit content. 'Following our urgent High Court application against Meta, we have secured a consent order that sets a critical precedent for online accountability and the enforcement of children's rights in the digital age,' said Sadleir. She described the outcome as a landmark moment in the battle to hold tech platforms accountable for the spread of harmful online content. During the litigation process, Sadleir said it became clear that some of DLC's demands extended beyond Meta's current technical capabilities. However, as part of the court-sanctioned consent order, the company has committed to taking three key steps to bolster child protection. These include establishing a two-year direct hotline between DLC and Meta to expedite the handling of urgent child protection cases, disclosing subscriber information for over 60 offending accounts across both platforms to enable families of victims to pursue justice, and permanently removing all accounts reported by DLC on behalf of victims. The ruling is seen as a 'David vs Goliath' by Sadleir, as the young team fought against 'an army of senior lawyers'. 'We remain deeply grateful to the survivors, families and schools who trusted us to act on their behalf, and to the broader public for their outcry and support. 'Moreover, we thank Ben Winks, Sanan Mirzoyev, as well as Rupert Candy, John Makate and Julian Govender from Rupert Candy Attorneys. This matter has shown, more clearly than ever, that urgent action is possible when the stakes are high enough and when our institutions are willing to rise to the occasion,' Sadleir said.
