Over 25 crore workers joined the strike, claim trade unions

The Hindu3 days ago
More than 25 crore workers participated in the nationwide general strike on Wednesday (July 9, 2025) against the policies of the Union government, particularly for scrapping the four Labour Codes, the platform of 10 central trade unions (CTUs) said. The leaders of the unions, addressing a workers' rally in New Delhi, said key sectors such as power, mines, minerals, coal, ports and public transport were affected by the strike.
The CTUs said in a statement that there were very large mobilisations in rural India and also at block-sub-division levels by informal sector workers, agricultural labour and farmers and other sections of common people. 'Participation of students and youth was quite visible in many States. The rank and file of the Samyukt Kisan Morcha [SKM] and joint front of agricultural labour unions played a significant role in the mobilisation in rural India,' they added.

Stern warning
Senior trade union leader Amarjeet Kaur said the workers gave a stern warning to the Centre that any move to impose the four Labour Codes would be opposed. She said the strike was the beginning of more joint protests with farmers. 'We will soon have a joint meeting with the SKM to chart the future course of the protests,' she said. The CTUs also appreciated Opposition leaders joining their case in election-bound Bihar. 'The move to exclude workers from voter list in Bihar will be objected,' said another trade union leader Rajeev Dimri.
Former MP and general secretary of the Centre of Indian Trade Unions Tapan Sen said the strike saw widespread participation of workers across numerous sectors such as coal, non-coal minerals (like iron ore, copper, bauxite, aluminium, manganese, and gold) finance sector, petroleum, oil and gas, telecom, textile and jute mills, defence sector and anganwadi workers. 'The markets were closed at many places in response to the strike/bandh call,' the CTUs said.
They added that it was a bandh-like situation in States such as Puducherry, Assam, Bihar, Jharkhand, Tamil Nadu, Punjab, Kerala, West Bengal, Odisha, Karnataka, Goa, Meghalaya, Manipur etc. 'Reports of partial bandhs were also received in many segments of Rajasthan, Haryana, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh etc. There was industrial and sectoral strike held in Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Gujarat,' they said.
The unions claimed that people expressed themselves against the rising inequalities in the face of unprecedented price rise of essential commodities, rising unemployment and underemployment, leading to desperation, increased suicides of casual labour and the unemployed youth. 'The government has not been conducting Indian Labour Conference for the last 10 years, violating international labour standards and continues to take decisions in contravention of the interests of labour force, including attempts to impose four Labour Codes to favour employers in the name of 'Ease of doing Business',' the CTUs said.
The leaders said the general strike was the beginning of the prolonged battle in the days to follow in the sectoral levels focused on determined united resistance, again to culminate into a bigger national-level heightened united action.

Won't contest in polls, says Union minister Oram

Bhubaneswar: Union tribal affairs minister Jual Oram on Saturday said he is not going to contest in future elections but would be willing to serve in other capacities such as a Rajya Sabha member or as a governor. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Speaking to the media in Sambalpur after attending a Rozgar Mela there, the six-time Lok Sabha member said, "I won't run for MLA or Lok Sabha MP any more. I will continue working for the party, but I feel it's time to make way for younger candidates." The 64-year-old veteran politician contested nine elections so far – seven for Lok Sabha and two in the assembly. His announcement comes barely a year after his re-election to Lok Sabha, defeating BJD's Dilip Tirkey by more than 1.38 lakh votes from Sundargarh constituency. Oram, who belongs to the Oraon tribe, made history in 1999 when he became India's first-ever cabinet minister for tribal affairs under Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. He held the same portfolio in the Modi govt from 2014 to 2019 and again for a third time in 2024. His political journey began in 1990 when he was elected to the assembly from Bonai. Since then, he has maintained an impressive electoral record, winning all contests except in 2009 when former CM Hemananda Biswal defeated him from Sundargarh Lok Sabha seat. In 2014, he was the lone BJP Lok Sabha member elected from Odisha. Before entering politics, Oram worked as an assistant foreman at Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL). Born into a poor tribal family in Kendudihi village, Sundargarh district, he rose through the ranks to become one of India's prominent tribal leaders. During his tenure, Oram was instrumental in implementing various programmes for tribal welfare and served as the chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Defence from 2019 to 2024. Amid speculation about the timing of his announcement, Oram, however, left the door open for his involvement in electoral politics. "These are my personal opinions. If the party asks me to contest again, I will comply," Oram said.

Gadkari Orders Spot-Wise Survey of Flood-Hit Areas, Seeks Report In Eight Days

1 2 Nagpur: In the wake of the rain that lashed Nagpur earlier this week, Union minister Nitin Gadkari directed the district administration to conduct a spot-wise assessment of the affected areas and submit a detailed report within eight days. In a high-level meeting at Niyojan Bhavan on Saturday to evaluate the rain-related situation and review various infrastructure projects, Gadkari took the administration to task over waterlogging reported across the city. Gadkari also expressed concern over the chaos caused by the downpour, which led to water entering homes in several low-lying localities, inconveniencing hundreds of residents. Sources said Gadkari again directed the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) and Nagpur Improvement Trust (NIT) to strengthen the city's stormwater drainage system, particularly in low-lying areas that were severely affected by recent rain. A key suggestion that emerged was to develop "stock model drains" in vulnerable low-lying zones to reduce waterlogging. Officials claimed that the flooding in Besa-Beltarodi and Manish Nagar was caused due to illegal constructions. Gadkari instructed officials to demolish unauthorized structures. MLA Khopde raised concerns about the situation in the Pardi area, while MLA Pravin Datke highlighted flooding near Metro stations. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Do you have a mouse?
