Time of India08-06-2025
Chennai: The city is to get another water reservoir, at Porur. Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (CMWSSB), the city's water agency which is popular as Metrowater has handed over a 258-crore contract to a consortium of SPML Infra and JWIL Infra that will build the reservoir.
Metrowater managing director T G Vinay said the reservoir, which will have a storage capacity of 15 million litres, will come up on 11,486 sq m at Porur and will benefit people in areas such as Manali, Madhavaram, and at least 10,000 residents in parts of South Chennai. Additionally, 100 MLD (million liters a day) of water will be supplied to residents in Tambaram Corporation and 20 urban local bodies (ULBs) under CMA, he added.
A Letter of Acceptance (LoA) was issued to JWIL Ltd, and preliminary survey work began, marking the first step of the 18-month-long project. The project involves building a reinforced cement concrete reservoir with dimensions of 76 x 45.5 metres and a depth of 5.25 metres. A high-capacity pumping station with a total pump output of 3,646 m³/hour and a 25-metre head will be built to handle up to 350 MLD.
Water will be pumped from the Perur pumping station at a total capacity of 400 MLD and connected to the existing transmission network.
The project includes several key stages, such as detailed surveys, construction of pumping stations and chlorine buildings, installation of mechanical and electrical systems, pipeline connections to existing water mains, and final testing and commissioning.
Of the 258 crore, 205.99 crore is funded by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), while the operational expenditure of 51.99 crore will be covered by the state govt. As part of the agreement, the SPML-JWIL consortium will take responsibility for operations and maintenance (O&M) of the infrastructure for 20 years. Service Level Agreements (SLAs) will ensure consistent quality and performance during this period, Vinay added.
SPML Infra chairman Subhash Sethi said the project will strengthen Chennai's water supply infra.

Pilot scheme to ensure round-the-clock water supply to begin in Adyar zone

Residents of Adyar zone will get round-the-clock piped water supply by the end of this year as Chennai Metrowater will soon appoint a concessionaire to implement the continuous drinking water supply. The water agency, which is now supplying 35 million litres a day (mld) of water intermittently, would provide about 50 mld of drinking water on a 24x7 basis to wards –169,170, 173,174, 178 to 180 - once the project is completed in two years. Residents would be charged according to water use, and smart water meters would be installed to measure water consumption. The ambitious project is based on the study done by Water Corporation of Odisha to improve Pallipattu and Thiruvanmiyur water distribution stations and execute the round-the-clock drinking water supply in Adyar zone on a pilot basis. It may be recalled that Metrowater had signed a memorandum of understanding with WATCO in July 2023 to implement the project in Kodambakkam and Adyar zones. Officials of the Metrowater noted that this may not be like 'Drink from Tap Mission' in Puri, Odisha. The concept is to ensure continuous, uninterrupted water supply to 64,000 households covering localities, including Adyar, Kotturpuram, Besant Nagar, Guindy, Ekkaduthangal and Taramani, through automation of operations and constant pressure pumping. Pipelines running for 377 km would be covered in the project. Residents of Adyar noted that the project would help maintain an equitable water supply in all the streets. It should also put an end to recurring issues of water mixing with sewage water in some streets. Janani Venkitesh, secretary, ROKA (Residents of Kasturba Association) said 'We get adequate water supply now and it is supplied twice a day in some areas. The pilot scheme to give 24*7 water supply is a welcome initiative to help use resources judiciously. The water agency must gather residents' feedback about effectiveness of the 24x7 metered water distribution system after its implementation.' The pilot project is one of the three schemes being taken up by Metrowater under Hybrid Annuity Model -a public private partnership model- wherein the concessionaire must improve operational efficiency and install smart infrastructure. The entire distribution network would be divided into district metered areas by installing boundary valves and flow meters. Water supply would be provided to dedicated pockets instead of combining with neighbouring areas from the same source to maintain equitable water supply, officials said. The project would use Internet of Things (IoT) technology for data collection and monitoring to reduce water loss and improve water management in the zone. The concessionaire must maintain the network for 15 years. Metrowater is already establishing a similar distribution system for uninterrupted water supply in two wards of Valasaravakkam zone.

BA (Hons) Economics vs BCom (Hons): Which degree will offer a gateway to business & policy?

('The Right Choice' is a series by The Indian Express that addresses common questions, misconceptions, and doubts surrounding undergraduate admissions. You can read the stories here.) — Prof (Dr) Sunil Kumar Choosing between a BA (Hons) in Economics and a BCom (Hons) is a pivotal decision for students aspiring to pursue careers in business, economics, or public policy. Although both programs offer academic strengths, they differ significantly in their focus, skill sets, and future prospects. CUET UG Result 2025 Live: Updates on NTA scorecard, result PDF download link The BA (Hons) Economics program is designed for students who prefer a theoretical approach to studying analytical thinking, mathematical modeling, and economic systems. This degree encompasses a wide range of topics, including microeconomics, macroeconomics, econometrics, development economics, public policy, and the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in policy framing. It is an excellent option for students interested in data-driven decision-making, economic research, or careers in policy-oriented organisations, think tanks, and international institutions. Graduates are well-prepared to secure professional employment in the government sector, central banks, consulting companies, and international financial organizations. Furthermore, the economics degree provides a solid foundation for pursuing MA Economics, MBA, or public policy programs at esteemed international universities. In contrast, the BCom (Hons) programme is an industry-focused course that provides practical knowledge in accounting, finance, marketing, taxation, and corporation law. It prepares students for corporate careers in finance, auditing, banking, and management. The curriculum is vocationally oriented, addressing the immediate demands of the industry and working life. This degree is ideal for students preparing for professional courses such as CA, CMA, CFA, and is highly valued in the commerce and corporate sector job market. When deciding between these two programmes, students should consider their career goals. The BA Economics is more suited to careers in economic consultancy, the civil service, and policy-making, particularly for those interested in shaping macro-economic policy or development policy. On the other hand, BCom (Hons) provides a direct route to business operations, corporate finance, and entrepreneurship, making it suitable for students who aspire to manage or own businesses. Students interested in working at the interface of economic policy, development, and global strategy, the BA (Hons) Economics may have an edge. Conversely, for those interested in careers in corporate, accounting, and business leadership, BCom (Hons) is the better gateway. Both degrees are valuable, and the better choice depends on the individual's career goals and interests in abstract economic analysis versus practical business applications.
