Indus Waters Treaty termination will benefit J&K, have far-reaching impact on Pakistan: LG Manoj Sinha

SRINAGAR: After the United States designated the militant outfit The Resistance Front (TRF) as a Foreign Terrorist Organization (FTO) and a Specially Designated Global Terrorist (SDGT), J&K Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha made a strong statement on Saturday.
TRF was behind the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack.
He said there are still a few elements in the region who "speak the language of TRF."
He also asserted that terminating the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT) is a befitting response to Pakistan and would have far-reaching consequences, as the country heavily depends on the Indus river system.
'India's water will now flow within India and remain in India. With the termination of IWT, we now have full control over the Jhelum and Chenab rivers,' LG Sinha said at a function in Jammu.
He also said that the termination of IWT would benefit J&K immensely, which will be able to harness its real hydro power potential.
'The barren areas of Jammu can be irrigated and there will be new momentum in the development of infrastructure in J&K.'
India suspended IWT with Pakistan after the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack in which 25 tourists and a local pony wala were killed.
"India will now create infrastructure, power plants and diversion to new areas with proper infrastructure to use the water and it will enable construction of new reservoirs," he added.

In U-Turn, Pak Minister Says "No Objection" To Terror Group Tag For TRF

Last week, Pakistan Foreign Minister Mohammad Ishaq Dar openly defended The Resistance Front (TRF) after the United States designated TRF as a Foreign Terrorist Organisation. However, in a significant shift, Dar backed the United States' decision to label it as a "terrorist organisation". The TRF, a proxy of the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), claimed responsibility for the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam that claimed the lives of 26 people. He had asserted that TRF had not carried out the attack, despite the group's public claim of responsibility. Speaking at an event in Washington, he said, "It is a sovereign decision of the United States to designate the TRF. We have no issue. And we welcome, if they have any evidence, that they are involved." Ishaq Dar says T.R.F should not be linked to L.e.T because LeT is no longer operational. 🤔😅 — speaknsee (@speaknsee) July 25, 2025 He added that he has "no objection" to the US designating the group as a terrorist organisation, but linking TRF with Lashkar-e-Taiba is "wrong". Dar repeated a claim often made by the Pakistani government and said, "That outfit was dismantled years ago by Pakistan. The actors were prosecuted, arrested and jailed, and the entire outfit was destroyed." India had pressed for TRF to be recognised as a terrorist outfit internationally, since 2023. It had submitted evidence and representations to the UN's 1267 Sanctions Committee monitoring team in May and November 2024. India had designated TRF as a terrorist organisation under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act in January 2023. According to the South Asia Terrorism Portal, TRF emerged in 2019 through social media announcements, and since then, has taken the responsibility for several attacks across Jammu and Kashmir. Dar met US Secretary of State Marco Rubio earlier on Friday. "Met with Pakistani Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister @MIshaqDar50 today to discuss expanding bilateral trade and enhancing collaboration in the critical minerals sector. I also thanked him for Pakistan's partnership in countering terrorism and preserving regional stability," Marco Rubio posted on X. Ishaq Dar says T.R.F should not be linked to L.e.T because LeT is no longer operational. 🤔😅 — speaknsee (@speaknsee) July 25, 2025 Pakistani Foreign Minister had also said that the two countries were very close to a trade deal and it could come within days.

‘Pakistan Willing To Talk To India, Awaiting New Delhi's Response': Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar

Dar said Pakistan is ready to work and cooperate with India on all fronts—from trade to counter-terrorism—as he called for 'meaningful negotiations' In what can be termed as an olive branch to India, Pakistan's deputy prime minister and foreign minister Ishaq Dar has reiterated Islamabad's willingness to engage in dialogue on a range of issues—from trade and economic cooperation to counter-terrorism. However, Dar noted that the ball is now in India's court, stating that Pakistan is still awaiting a formal response from New Delhi. Speaking during an interaction with the Atlantic Council think tank, Dar said, 'Pakistan is ready to work and cooperate with India on all fronts—from trade to counter-terrorism." He emphasised the need for 'meaningful negotiations", calling for the resumption of composite dialogue, a framework once used by both nations to address bilateral concerns including Kashmir, security, people-to-people exchanges, and economic ties. Dar's overture comes close on the heels of Operation Sindoor where India pounded nine terrorist hubs in Pakistan in the aftermath of the Pahalgam attack in which 26 innocent tourists were mercilessly killed in Baisaran Valley. On the issue of latest strain between India and Pakistan, Dar, who also met United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio in Washington to discuss bilateral relations, trade cooperation, regional stability, counterterrorism, and global peace initiatives, appreciated what he described as the pivotal role played by US President Donald Trump and Rubio in de-escalating tensions between the countries by facilitating a ceasefire and averting a broader conflict between the two nuclear-armed states. The statement comes even as India has consistently maintained that the ceasefire understanding was a bilateral decision between the Indian and Pakistani military leaderships, with no third-party involvement. On the terror front, the foreign minister also seemed to shift his stance on the decision of the United States to designate The Resistance Front (TRF) as a Foreign Terrorist Organisation (FTO) and a Specially Designated Global Terrorist (SDGT). At an event in Washington, DC on Friday, Dar said Pakistan has 'no issue" with the US designation. However, he reiterated that linking TRF with Lashkar-e-Taiba is 'wrong". The Resistance Front—which India and the US maintain is an offshoot of the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT)—claimed responsibility for the Pahalgam terror attack on April 22. view comments First Published: July 26, 2025, 14:48 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. 'No objection': Cornered on TRF, Pakistan's Deputy PM Ishaq Dar makes a U-turn, backs US terror listing

This marked a significant shift from Dar's previous stance on the Pakistan-based terror group read more Pakistan's Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar backed the United States' decision to designate Lashkar-backed The Resistance Front (TRF) as a 'terrorist organisation'. This marked a significant shift from Dar's previous stance on the Pakistan-based terror group. It is pertinent to note that it was TRF that claimed responsibility for the Pahalgam terror attack on April 22. The attack that rocked India claimed the lives of 26 innocent people. While speaking at an event in Washington, Dar said that Pakistan has 'no objection" to the US designation. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD However, he went on to claim that linking TRF with Lashkar-e-Taiba is 'wrong," without giving any evidence for his assertion. 'It is a sovereign decision of the United States to designate the TRF. We have no issue. And we welcome, if they have any evidence, that they are involved," Dar said at the event organised by the Atlantic Council. I questioned Pakistan's Foreign Minister in Washington I asked about TRF - the group responsible for the Pahalgam attacks which PAK defended at the UN PAK before: "We don't consider TRF illegal. Show proof" PAK now: "US has listed TRF as a terror group. We have no objection" — Shashank Mattoo (@MattooShashank) July 26, 2025 The change in stance Earlier in April, Dar told Pakistan's parliament that Islamabad had prevented the inclusion of TRF in the United Security Council (UNSC) resolution that condemned the Pahalgam terror attack. 'We opposed the mention of TRF in the UNSC statement. I got calls from global capitals, but Pakistan will not accept. TRF was deleted, and Pakistan prevailed," Dar had said. At that time, the Pakistani foreign minister also maintained that Pakistan would need more substantial evidence regarding the TRF's involvement in terror activities. Even while responding to the question posed by The Hindustan Times on Friday, Dar defended his claim, saying there was no conclusive proof then to warrant TRF's inclusion in the UN Security Council statement. It is pertinent to note that India designated The Resistance Front (TRF) as a terrorist outfit under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act in January 2023. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD The terror group surfaced back in 2019 through online announcements and has since claimed responsibility for several attacks in Jammu and Kashmir, including a grenade attack in Srinagar that injured seven civilians, and a series of targeted killings in 2021.
