I'm a TV critic - I was so wrong about Shark! Celebrity Infested Waters
'If you get eaten by a shark… that's one hell of a story at the funeral, isn't it?'
That's the words of Ross Noble, shortly before he is actually bitten by a shark in the name of ITV's bizarre and surprisingly touching new reality series, Shark! Celebrity Infested Waters.
Thankfully, he makes it out of the water unscathed. His first, and I imagine only, shark attack comes from an eight-foot lemon shark, a relatively harmless species of apex predator which chomps on his leg but barely punctures his wetsuit.
To celebrate the 50th anniversary of Jaws, the Steven Spielberg horror that continues to strike fear into the hearts of all who watch it (causing generations to still be too scared to enter the water) ITV is throwing some of the UK's most beloved celebs into shark infested waters to prove that they have an unreasonably bad rep.
On paper, it sounds like a Bushtucker trial ramped up to 100. I'm A Celebrity contestants can – and have – survived the odd nibble from a huntsman spider or a venomless snake but Ant and Dec are yet to throw a Corrie legend in the water with an actual shark.
An impressive cast, boasting Sir Lenny Henry, Countdown's Rachel Riley and McFly's Dougie Poynter, is helped by leading shark experts to come face to face with some of the most feared predators in the world in their natural environment.
Gradually, they build the courage to free-swim with a tiger shark – widely considered to be one of the most aggressive animals in the ocean.
They're welcomed into the process by Paul de Gelder, a charismatic former marine who lost his leg and arm to a bull shark in 2009 but now devotes his life to protecting the animal that almost killed him. It's a stark reminder that while, yes, sharks are misunderstood they're not kittens of the sea.
The celebs are thrown straight into the deep end. Paul tells them they'll be getting in the water with more than a dozen bull sharks – the very species that ripped his limbs from his body – but for the only time in this entire process they will be in a cage.
There are varying degrees of terror from the stars: On one end of the scale you have Rachel Riley who can't believe her luck ad gleefully dives into the water without a shred of fear.
At the other you have Call The Midwife's Helen George, who hasn't dared put her head under water for more than 20 years let alone share a space with a four-meter-long maneater.
Even as somewhat of a shark obsessive (rarely a day goes by when I don't lose myself down a rabbit hole of shark videos on Instagram) I wasn't sure how or if Shark! Celebrity Infested Waters would work.
Obviously, there's no real jeopardy – not that I'd want that – but without it what is the pull?
Unexpectedly, the pull is George, who trembles just looking at the water. Her fear is so deep-rooted she sobs just at the idea of jumping off the boat.
But there is no contest here, the entire group is rooting for each other and there is no one to root for more than George, who perhaps seems unlikely to swim with a tiger shark but shows incredible perseverance which becomes a surprisingly moving watch.
Determined to be strong for her two children, George pushes herself beyond what she thought possible.
Reality television is at its best with camaraderie at its core, and I can't recall another show that shows teamwork quite like this.
It's refreshing and actually quite a bold move not to have any contest running through Shark! Celebrity Infested Waters but it's a gamble that pays off.
I had no idea what there would be to love about watching celebrities learning to dive but there are few reality shows which show so much growth and so quickly.
But Shark! Celebrity Waters sets out to serve a greater purpose than just reducing Helen George to a nervous breakdown. More Trending
Initially, I feared it was just a cheap attempt to disguise putting celebrities in precarious situations with a deadly predator, but it does genuinely feel determined to prove sharks are so far from the monster Jaws portrayed them to be.
Without sharks, the ocean dies and if the ocean dies then we die. Sadly, that's not as sexy a tagline as 'just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water'.
Will Shark! Celebrity Infested Waters cause a surge in sympathy for sharks? It's a tough sell, but it's definitely a step in the right direction and does feel far more well-intentioned than I thought it would.

Daniel Craig's best James Bond movie is available to stream on ITV now
A James Bond movie starring Daniel Craig that has been described as the most 'visually stunning' in the franchise is now available to stream on a major UK platform. In what is a huge win for devoted 007 fans, Skyfall has arrived on ITVX more than a decade after its release in 2012. Starring Javier Barden, Judie Dench and Ralph Fiennes, the thriller was a smash hit amongst fans and critics. It was also the third of Craig's performances, directed by Oscar-winning director Sam Mendes, who is known for 1917 and American Beauty, and shot by Roger Deakins. Taking to social media, @CinemaTweets1 said: 'Javier Bardem's performance as Raoul Silva is my favorite James Bond villain ever. Skyfall honestly feels like a stand-alone film or outlier from the rest of the Bond series given the creative decisions made by Sam Mendes. Bardem is also a big reason- he's a worthy adversary.' @BestMovieMom added: 'Skyfall will remain the most visually stunning James Bond film for a long time.' @Danimalish also said: 'Whenever I watch SKYFALL I'm convinced I'm watching the best James Bond film. 'From Daniel Craig's steely performance to the incredible supporting cast including Judi Dench, to of course Roger Deakins' immaculate cinematography. This was the peak of the Daniel Craig era.' Meanwhile, @TheCinesthetic wrote: 'As the third film in Craig's run, Skyfall isn't just a great Bond film…it's a visual triumph. Roger Deakins turned espionage into art.' The film follows Bond as he pursues an assassin in Istanbul to retrieve a stolen list containing the identities of undercover agents. However, the plan goes disastrously wrong, leaving Chief M (Dench) forced to take drastic action. The espionage thriller was nominated for five Oscars and went on to claim two of them for Best Sound Editing and Best Original Song, which was given to Adele. Its move on to ITVX comes as ITV dropped all episodes of a gripping crime thriller that fans hailed as 'phenomenal'. The tense eight-episode drama, Under the Bridge, has finally landed on ITV for viewers to watch for free in the UK, and you are in for an emotional rollercoaster. The 2024 series stars Oscar nominee Lily Gladstone opposite Daisy Jones and the Six actor Riley Keough. More Trending Elsewhere in the James Bond universe, Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight was named as the screenwriter for the latest Bond film. Amazon MGM onfirmed on social media on Thursday night that Knight will pen the script for the next instalment. The announcement follows an intensive search by Amazon MGM, which gained full creative control of the Bond series earlier this year from Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson. Skyfall is available to watch on ITVX. Got a story? Coronation Street star announces abrupt exit as character 'killed off' without warning
One Coronation Street star confirmed they had left the ITV soap with their final scenes airing on Friday, with fans convinced their character was killed off in a twist A Coronation Street star has confirmed their exit from the ITV soap and it's already aired. In a brutal twist their character may have been killed off, after the actor's farewell post left fans convinced they were "brown bread". Logan Radcliffe was back on the ITV soap this week, visited in prison by Carla Connor. She was desperate for answers on what happened to her partner Lisa Swain's late wife Becky Swain. It comes as Lisa was struggling to move forward, not knowing for sure if Becky was in trouble before her death and why she was killed, accident or not, and Carla wanted to help. She visited Logan who demanded £10,000 for information he may have on Becky. He then let slip a name, Tia Wardley, while no context was given. Whoever she is, it was enough to land Logan in trouble with a cellmate over a "mutual friend" he'd upset. He was told he had said too much, and with that his cell door was closed with it clear he was in danger. As the episode came to an end, actor Harry Lowbridge, who pays Logan, took to Instagram to announce his exit from the show. Confirming his final scenes had now aired, the ones with the random cellmate, he confirmed post-attack he would not be seen again. With that, fans were convinced Logan was now dead. They beloeved whoever Tia was, fake or not, he'd said too much and a mystery person made the cellmate punish him. Fans believe it will emerge that Logan is dead, killed in his cell, with the actor confirming no more scenes were planned. He shared on Instagram: "Farewell Logan. It's been a blast x." Taking to social media after the post and the scenes, fans shared their theories that the soap had just killed off a character without warning. One viewer said: "So Logan is brown bread then?" Another fan agreed: "RIP Logan," as a third viewer said; "So Logan gets killed off in prison then!" A further comment read; "Harry posting a goodbye? Has Logan been killed in prison?" The comments kept on coming with one fan writing: "Okay so when Logan is killed in prison then what?!" Whether Logan is dead or alive is yet to be revealed despite suspicions, with fans wondering if he will return at some point - and if we will find out who it was that orchestrated the attack. Then there's the fact that Tia could or could not be linked to the plot. Why are people so desperate to keep the truth hidden too? All will have to be revealed at some point. Loose Women panellist Olivia Attwood is to present a new cooking reality TV show, which will see contestants filmed both in and out of the kitchen. The Heat will take place in Barcelona and involve 10 chefs working under Michelin star chef Jean-Christophe Novelli, as he tries to find the next rising star for his new restaurant in the Spanish city. Advertisement The show, which will be broadcast on ITV2 and ITVX next year, is not a straightforward cooking competition, as each day the cameras will keep rolling once the cast have finished in the kitchen. Viewers can expect promotions, demotions, power plays, sackings and shock decisions throughout the series, according to producers. View this post on Instagram A post shared by ITV Studios (@itvstudios) Attwood, who has presented a number of documentaries for ITV, said: 'It is such an honour to host this brand-new format for ITV2 and ITVX. Being at the helm of something this fresh and exciting is a total pinch-me moment!' Novelli, who has previously appeared as a judge on Masterchef Australia, said: 'I couldn't be more thrilled to join this new exciting show and help spotlight the next generation of culinary talent. 'Known for my drive and intensity in the kitchen, I'll be using my passion and unique teaching style to push these young chefs to dig deep, stay sharp, and prove they have what it takes to grow, evolve, and make their mark. It's going to be a wild ride, and I know we'll discover some true culinary stars along the way.' Paul Mortimer, director of reality commissioning and acquisitions at ITV, said: 'The Heat is the perfect fusion of a high-stakes cooking show with real-life drama, and with the fantastic Olivia at the forefront alongside the renowned Jean-Christophe calling the shots in the kitchen, it's shaping up to be a new reality obsession for our younger viewers on ITV2 and ITVX.'
