Ethiopia arrests 82 suspected members of Islamic State group
The 82 individuals were trained in neighbouring Somali Puntland region, according to state outlet Fana Media Corporation, which cited a statement from the National Intelligence and Security Service (NISS).
Ethiopia shares a long border with Somalia, which for months has been experiencing a resurgence of attacks by the Islamist Al-Shabaab group.
Fana said late Tuesday the suspected Islamic State group members were 'identified and arrested', but did not give any further details.
The suspects 'had been recruited for a terror mission', Fana said, noting the arrests took place in several regions across the country, including capital Addis Ababa.
Somalia and Ethiopia have had tense relations for months after Addis Ababa announced an agreement with the breakaway Somaliland region last year, angering Mogadishu and raising fears of regional destabilisation.
Relations between Somalia and Ethiopia have since normalised.
Ethiopia is part of the African Union Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) combating the Al-Shabaab group in Somalia.
The AUSSOM mission faces funding difficulties, even as fears of the groups resurgence are stoked by attacks in the Horn of Africa nation. – AFP

Kelantan intensifies efforts to tackle youth social issues with religious programmes
KOTA BHARU: The Kelantan government has reinforced its initiatives to combat social problems among young people by reintroducing religious education programmes. The state Islamic Religious Affairs Department (JAHEAIK) has resumed fardu ain and Quran classes for LGBT individuals, a programme that had been paused during the COVID-19 pandemic. State Islamic Development, Dakwah, Information and Public Relations Committee chairman Mohd Asri Mat Daud confirmed the revival of these classes, which are now held twice weekly. 'Since June 2024, the classes have resumed as usual and are held twice a week. Throughout the programme, we have observed progress among participants, some of whom have mastered Quran recitation and shown behavioural changes and repentance as a result of the initiative,' he said. The programme, initially launched in 2019, is a collaboration between JAHEAIK's Islamic Family Law Division, Persatuan Aspirasi Kelantan, and Persatuan Perantaraan Pesakit Kelantan (SAHABAT). It was temporarily halted in 2020 due to pandemic restrictions. In addition to the classes for LGBT individuals, the state government also runs the Al-Muttakin programme for those under surveillance for drug-related offences. Mohd Asri highlighted these efforts in response to a query from Harun Ismail (PAS-Tawang) during the Kelantan state legislative assembly session. - Bernama

US President Trump 'caught off guard' by Israeli strikes in Syria
WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump was "caught off guard" by Israeli strikes in Syria last week, White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt said Monday, adding that he discussed the issue with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Israel had launched strikes on the capital Damascus and the southern Druze-majority city of Sweida, saying it aimed to put pressure on the Syrian government to withdraw its troops from the region amid ongoing clashes there. Trump "was caught off guard by the bombing in Syria and also the bombing of a Catholic church in Gaza," Leavitt told reporters at a press briefing. "In both accounts, the president quickly called the prime minister to rectify those situations," she continued. Netanyahu had visited the White House earlier this month, his third trip since Trump returned to power on January 20. "The president enjoys a good working relationship with Prime Minister Bibi Netanyahu, and stays in, you know, frequent communication with him," Leavitt said. "When it came to Syria, we saw a de-escalation there." Also on Friday, Prime Minister Netanyahu called Pope Leo to express regret at the strike on the Catholic church in Gaza, blaming a "stray missile." In May, Trump met with Syria's Islamist president Ahmad al-Sharaa in Saudi Arabia shortly after lifting many longstanding US sanctions against Damascus. Trump later praised the leader, who led a major armed group that was once aligned with Al Qaeda and toppled the Syrian government in December. The United States removed a bounty on Sharaa's head after he came to power.
