Honda Super EV Concept To Debut At Goodwood Festival Of Speed

NDTV18-06-2025

Honda is going to mark its presence at the Goodwood Festival of Speed with a special send off to its hot hatch , the Civic Type R Ultimate Edition. Along with it, the Japanese automaker will have the new hybrid Prelude and the 0 SUV. Additionally, the brand will use the opportunity to introduce an electric urban vehicle concept. Called the Super EV, the hatchback has remained under a veil with a very few details on the surface. It is speculated to be the successor of the Honda e.
The new concept seems to have the personality of a Kei car with a boxy design with a curvy front bumper. Another element that stands out is a closed grille with an integrated charging port complemented by circular headlamps and vertical headlamps. All of these elements are reminiscent of the Honda N-One sold in the Japanese market. At the rear end, the car gets a short hood with bulging fenders.
Honda Super EV will be relatively smaller and might step in the territory of the Hyundai Inster. Furthermore, it looks like it is ready to enter production. This is because it does not have typical concept features like oversized wheels and other fancy design elements. Instead, it gets traditional door handles instead of the flush sitting handles.
The details on specifications of the car are still scarce. However, in the international market the electric vehicle will likely be launched as an affordable model with specs fitting the price range. This comes as part of the brand's plan to launch new electric vehicles. These EVs will come with new platforms, new batteries and new technology for the powertrain.

China lifts a nearly 2-year ban on seafood from Japan over Fukushima wastewater

BEIJING — China has reopened its market to seafood from Japan after a nearly two-year ban over the discharge of slightly radioactive wastewater from the tsunami-destroyed Fukushima nuclear power plant. A notice from the customs agency said the ban had been lifted Sunday and that imports from most of Japan would be resumed. The ban, imposed in August 2023, was a major blow to Japan's fisheries industry. China was the biggest overseas market for Japanese seafood, accounting for more than one-fifth of its exports. The nuclear plant at Fukushima was heavily damaged by a deadly tsunami that followed a huge offshore earthquake in 2011. Water still must be pumped in to cool the radioactive fuel. The water is then stored in what was an ever-growing complex of tanks on the property. After years of debate, the utility won government permission to discharge the water gradually into the sea after treating it to remove most of the radioactive elements. Japanese officials said the wastewater would be safer than international standards and have negligible environmental impact. China disagreed and imposed a ban, saying the discharge would endanger the fishing industry and coastal communities on its east coast. The ban will remain in place for seafood from 10 of Japan's 47 prefectures, including Fukushima and nearby ones. Japanese seafood exporters will have to reapply for registration in China and all imports will have to include a health certificate, a certificate of compliance for radioactive substance testing and a certificate of origin, the Chinese customs agency said.

Nissan seeks to delay supplier payments to free up cash, company emails show

Nissan Motor has asked some suppliers to allow it to delay payments to free up short-term funds, according to several emails and a company document reviewed by Reuters, as the troubled Japanese automaker scrambles to boost cash. New CEO Ivan Espinosa, who took over in April, has unveiled plans to shed around 15% of Nissan's global workforce and close seven plants as he targets 500 billion yen ($3.4 billion) in cost cuts over the next two years. Battered by slumping sales and weighed down by an ageing vehicle lineup, the car maker reported a $4.5 billion net annual loss in the financial year that ended in March and has declined to give a forecast this year. Now, Nissan has asked some suppliers in Britain and the European Union to accept delays in payment, according to the correspondence reviewed by Reuters and a person with knowledge of the matter. The move would allow it to have more cash on hand at the close of the April-June first quarter and follows similar requests before the end of the last financial year in March, the emails showed. It is not uncommon for companies to request payment extensions from suppliers to help free up cash. In a statement to Reuters, Nissan said it had incentivised some of its suppliers to collaborate under more flexible payment terms, at no cost to them, to support its free cash flow. "They could choose to be paid immediately or opt for a later payment with interest," Nissan said. The correspondence, which has not been previously reported, gives a detailed look at Nissan's effort to conserve cash in the short term, even if that means paying suppliers more down the line. The emails were exchanged among Nissan employees in Britain and the EU, including staff in its purchasing and treasury departments, according to their profiles on LinkedIn. One employee told co-workers in emails this month that suppliers were "again" being asked for an extension of payment terms. It was in line with the aim to bolster free cash flow "requested from CEO top down", the employee told colleagues. Nissan told Reuters its CEO did not mandate functional tasks in regions. June payments would be delayed to August 15, the employee wrote, later adding some would be pushed to September. Suppliers would not be forced to accept delayed payment, the employee wrote. The requests went out earlier this month, according to the person with knowledge of the matter. "It shows the difficult situation Nissan is facing in terms of financing," said Seiji Sugiura, senior analyst at Tokai Tokyo Intelligence Laboratory. "It appears they want to postpone their current expenses as much as possible." Nissan said in its statement that it was taking immediate actions to recover its performance and rebuild to a leaner, more resilient structure. "While we are taking these actions we aim for sufficient liquidity to weather the costs of the turnaround actions and redeem bond maturities," it said. It expects to record negative free cash flow of 550 billion yen, or about $3.8 billion, for its automotive business this quarter, worse than the 303 billion yen in the same period last year. Following typical seasonal patterns, the first quarter is expected to be Nissan's most challenging, Chief Financial Officer Jeremie Papin said in May. It is targeting positive free cash flow by its 2026 financial year. Reuters was not able to determine whether Nissan made similar requests to suppliers in other regions, how many suppliers it contacted, or the term of extensions sought. In Japan, it has already faced scrutiny over supplier payments, after regulators found it had unlawfully underpaid dozens of them. BIG TASK In other internal emails, a director in the treasury department appeared to refer to a target of freeing up 150 million euros ($175 million), stating in an email last month the need to deliver on a "purchasing task of 150M EUR". Delaying supplier payments until July - the start of Nissan's second quarter - was an option to help achieve the "purchasing task" of 150 million euros, the director wrote in another email. Nissan said in its statement it would not comment on internal discussions or specific targets. The emails showed Nissan discussed giving suppliers two options: one was to accept delayed payment in consideration for a higher payment. The other was to be paid on time as usual, in which case HSBC would make the payment and Nissan would later repay the bank with interest. HSBC, listed as one of Nissan's banks in a March filing, declined to comment on client matters. The automaker estimated it could boost free cash flow by up to 59 million euros by extending payment terms with more than a dozen companies in Britain and the EU, including UK-based units of temp-staffing firm ManpowerGroup and shipper Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, a company document from October 2024 showed. Both ManpowerGroup and Mitsui O.S.K. declined to comment. In February, the treasury department director wrote about delivering free cash flow for the close of the financial year in March, raising concern about meeting targets and saying more suppliers, including in India, needed to be contacted. "Only a few weeks remaining," the director wrote. "Urgent support needed." Nissan had 2.2 trillion yen ($15.1 billion) in cash and cash equivalents on hand at the end of March. It faces some 700 billion yen in debt coming due this financial year. Its debt has been cut to "junk" by all three major ratings agencies. Any further ratings downgrades could complicate future fundraising plans, Nissan said in a filing this month.

Greenko founders buy Orix Corp's 20% in Greenko Energy for $1.3 bn

AM Green BV will buy Japanese financial service firm Orix Corp 's 17.5 per cent stake in clean energy producer Greenko Energy Holdings for USD 1.28 billion, the firms said on Monday. AM Green is owned by the founders of Greenko, Anil Chalamalasetty and Mahesh Kolli. Post this transaction, AMG will own around 25 per cent of Greenko, whose largest owner is Singapore's sovereign wealth fund GIC Pte with a 58 per cent stake. Orix will transfer 17.5 per cent holding in Greenko, out of its total ownership of 20 per cent, to AM Green Power BV (a subsidiary of AM Green BV). The Tokyo-based firm will also invest about USD 731 million in a convertible note issued by parent company AM Green (Luxembourg) Sarl (AMG Lux). Greenko owns major renewable energy companies in India and operates renewable energy power generation facilities with a total installed capacity of 10 gigawatt, including solar, wind, and hydroelectric power generation. In addition, it is advancing the development of large-scale pumped storage power generation. Live Events "Orix has supported Greenko's business growth since it invested in March 2021. Orix decided to sell 17.5 per cent of the 20 per cent share holdings in Greenko and invest in AMG Lux as part of its capital recycling strategy," the Japanese firm said in a statement. This investment will provide Orix long-term exposure to green hydrogen, ammonia, SAF and other next-gen molecules, aligning with its capital recycling strategy, AM Green said in a separate statement. While AM Green (AMG) did not give the value of the transaction, Orix said the transfer price is "USD 1.282 billion". "This transaction is a key milestone in building one of the world's fully integrated and scalable green energy platforms," Chalamalasetty, founder and CEO of AM Green, said. In January 2025, Orix announced that it had entered into a share transfer agreement with Greenko and a new investment in AMG Lux, but because the conditions precedent had not been satisfied, the agreement was terminated in April 2025. "However, after further consideration among related parties, we have decided to reenter into this agreement," it said. The transaction is subject to regulatory approvals and is likely to be concluded by the end of July. AMG has plans to produce 5 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) of green ammonia , with the first 1 MTPA project located in Kakinada in Andhra Pradesh, which is under construction with targeted commissioning during the second half of 2026. It has also signed binding term sheets with the likes of Uniper SE, an energy company, and Yara Clean Ammonia, a trader and distributor of ammonia, to supply green ammonia to Europe. In the future, AMG aims to expand its business to include the production of 1 MTPA of green hydrogen, synthetic fuels such as methanol, as well as the production of SAF ( Sustainable Aviation Fuel ) using biomass-derived raw materials, and to become a platform company that builds a value chain for next generation energy. AMG has also signed globally the largest power purchase agreements for supply of round-the-clock carbon-free energy for its first 2 MTPA green ammonia projects and has access to electrolysers through its manufacturing JV with John Cockerill. Its Kakinada industrial complex, currently under construction, will be the world's first and largest integrated green industrial zone. It will house 2 MTPA of green ammonia production, 2 GW electrolyser gigafactory and facilities for SAF and green chemical production. Greenko's flagship 1.7 GW pumped storage project in Andhra Pradesh has already been commissioned, with its next 2 pumped storage projects in Madhya Pradesh and Karnataka (2.5 GWs) are expected to be commissioned in 2026 and 2027, respectively. Orix said its gains from the transaction are subject to exchange rate fluctuations. "If the sale price is estimated using the exchange rate as of June 27, 2025, (USD 1 equal to 144.58 Japanese Yen), Orix expects to record a gain on the sale of approximately 93.4 billion Yen (including the valuation gain on the 2.5 per cent stake which we will continue to hold) in the consolidated financial statements in the second quarter for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2026," it said.
