WWE and AEW Legends Mourn Death of Former Four Horsemen & NFL Hall of Famer

Steve "Mongo" McMichael has died at the age of 67. After a long bout with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), McMichael passed away in Joliet, IL, in the same state where he starred for the Chicago Bears in the late 1970s and through the 1980s.
After McMichael's Hall-of-Fame football career ended, he had a successful career in professional wrestling, first as a broadcaster and then as an in-ring competitor and member of the legendary Four Horsemen faction. Several former professional football players and wrestling legends took to social media to pay their respects to McMichael.

Ric Flair, who has consistently posted updates about Mongo's condition posted a touching tribute to McMichael:
WCW legend Sting also posted a tribute to McMichael reflecting on his final conversations with him.
All Elite Wrestling posted this classy tribute image and post.
WWE Raw General Manager, Adam Pearce paid homage to McMichael with an image and reflection on Mongo's professional accomplishments.
WWE legend, Brian Heffron aka The Blue Meanie posted an image and a memory of a conversation he had with McMichael.
Wrestling icon, Missy Hyatt also posted about McMichael.
McMichael battled the disease since being diagnosed in 2021. Despite his declining health, he remained a source of strength and inspiration for fans of both football and wrestling. His story resonated beyond the ring or the field—it became a message about resilience, loyalty, and legacy.

McMichael's impact spanned two arenas—football and professional wrestling—each of which felt his presence in different ways. In the NFL, he was one of the anchors of the famed 1985 Chicago Bears defense, a Super Bowl-winning team etched into football history. McMichael was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2024.
In wrestling, he was both a surprising and successful crossover, eventually joining one of the sport's most iconic stables. His personality, toughness, and charisma translated in ways few athletes have ever managed when crossing over from one entertainment field to another.
As a Chicagoan who was in love with that 1985 Bears team, I am especially sad to cover the news of Mongo's passing.
Expect WWE to acknowledge McMichael on Friday's episode of SmackDown as AEW did on Wednesday night for Dynamite. His presence meant enough to professional wrestling to be universally recognized.

Bears' Ben Johnson shares concerning news about Chicago's offense

The Chicago Bears will have a new look offense with new head coach Ben Johnson at the helm. While there's excitement surrounding what Johnson can do with Caleb Williams and Co., it's still a process heading into Week 1. Johnson played a part in turning Jared Goff's career around with the Detroit Lions after arriving from Los Angeles in 2021. Now, in Chicago, the former Lions offensive coordinator is tasked with taking Williams to the next level in Year 2. Before their preseason opener against the Miami Dolphins on August 10, the Bears had a tough practice. Johnson shared a concerning update on the offense, pointing to one recurring issue that's becoming hard to ignore. 'It's something we're going to have to address for sure,' Johnson said (h/t Courtney Cronin of ESPN). 'It showed up more today than it has in practice. This was more like a real game and if it continues like that, we're not going to win many games.' The offense repeatedly made the same mistakes, and the safety during the drill from the one-yard line was deemed unacceptable. MORE:Bears hint at position change for DJ Moore in Ben Johnson's first season in charge 'Execution of the play wasn't what we wanted to be,' Johnson added. 'It's a credit to the defense -- they came out and they kicked the offense's rear in that. So that's what showed up to me -- they wanted it a little bit more.' Johnson is working with an offense hoping to improve after the Bears ranked near the bottom in passing touchdowns (20), had the fewest passing yards (4,820), and were second to last in first downs (296), with only the Carolina Panthers having fewer. Although Johnson has a franchise quarterback in Williams, he still needs to shape the whole offense to fit his vision. Considering how the unit performed last season, it's a work in progress that won't happen overnight. It will be interesting to see how long into the season it takes for the unit to be at a level at which the coach feels it's a well-oiled machine.

Brawl breaks out between fans during WWE SummerSlam in NJ

A massive hair-pulling brawl broke out between female fans in the bleachers of WWE's SummerSlam in New Jersey. The chaos erupted early into Night 2 of the highly anticipated event at MetLife Stadium on Sunday, with at least six wrestling fans involved in the ringside melee, the now-viral video shows. Video shows a woman in a black T-shirt appearing to try to grab and throw elbows at another woman in a white tank top, only to have another woman in a red shirt come up from behind her and yank her by the hair. 3 The fight broke out Sunday during WWE SummerSlam in New Jersey. X / @Kazeem The fan in the black shirt then starts to throw a flurry of body blows at the woman in the red skirt, as her hair is still being pulled. Behind them, a male fan was trying to hold the woman in the red skirt. However, another man appeared from behind him and pulled him away. The fight was brought to an end after multiple security guards donning orange shirts punched the brawlers and put a stop to the violence. The woman in the red skirt is seen kicking at the male fan who had been pulling at her and furiously pointing at him as the clip comes to an end. It remains unclear how the unscripted madness started. 3 Video shows a woman in a black T-shirt appearing to try to grab and throw elbows at another woman in a white tank top, only to have another woman in a red shirt come up from behind her and yank her by the hair. X / @Kazeem Aside from WrestleMania, the two-night event held in East Rutherford, NJ, is WWE's largest show of the year — with the average ticket price for SummerSlam starting at over $400. The two-night beatdown saw its share of action and drama in the ring. Cordy Rhodes defeated legend John Cena to regain the Undisputed WWE Championship in an epic street fight that capped off an incredible weekend of wrestling in East Rutherford, marking the second title reign for Rhodes after he won the championship at WrestleMania 40. After the shocking defeat, Cena stood in the center of the ring, when fans were treated to another twist. Brock Lesnar's music hit for his stunning return after not appearing in the ring since SummerSlam in 2023 and delivered his F5 finisher to a stunned Cena to set up a match later this year during the 'Peacemaker' star's retirement run. It was Lesnar's first WWE match since being named in the bombshell civil sexual lawsuit against Vince McMahon by ex-employee Janel Grant. 3 It remains unclear how the unscripted madness started. X / @Kazeem Lesnar has been persona non grata around WWE since then, with his merchandise being removed from the WWE Shop and his playable character, along with McMahon's, being taken out of the WWE 2K24 video game. Lesnar was rumored to be returning at the 2024 Royal Rumble, but the appearance was scrapped after the news of the lawsuit broke. McMahon has denied the allegations against him. His attorney, Jessica Rosenberg, called Grant, naming Lesnar in the suit, a 'publicity stunt' in February. Earlier in the night, WWE played a video montage on screens at MetLife Stadium honoring Hulk Hogan. Hogan's 'Real American' theme song played at the end of the tribute, as his son, Nick Hogan, was brought to tears and placed his hands over his heart as fans cheered. Hogan, whose real name was Terry Bollea, died on July 24 from a heart attack.
