India's US crude oil imports surge over 50% in first half of 2025; LNG, LPG trade also expands: Report
India has significantly ramped up its crude oil imports from the United States during President Donald Trump's second term, marking a major shift in its energy sourcing strategy, according to official trade data, reported ANI- quoting sources.
Imports of US crude rose over 50 per cent in the first half of 2025 compared to the same period last year. From January to June 25, India imported an average of 0.271 million barrels per day (mb/d), up from 0.18 mb/d during the same timeframe in 2024.
The uptick has been especially sharp in recent months. Imports during the April-June 2025 quarter soared 114 per cent year-on-year, with the value rising from $1.73 billion in Q1 of FY24-25 to $3.7 billion in Q1 of FY25-26.
'So, in July 2025, India imported 23 per cent more crude oil from the US compared to June 2025. In India's overall crude imports, while the US share was only 3 per cent, it increased to 8 per cent in July. Furthermore, in the financial year (2025-2026), Indian companies would increase their crude oil import by 150 per cent,' the ANI sources said.
The energy trade expansion is not limited to crude. Imports of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the US nearly doubled — rising from $1.41 billion in FY2023-24 to $2.46 billion in FY2024-25.

The growth in bilateral energy trade comes amid continued affirmations of strong diplomatic ties between the two nations. Ministry of External Affairs on Friday, reiterated its confidence in the strength of the Indo-US partnership. 'India and the United States share a comprehensive global strategic partnership anchored in shared interests, democratic values, and robust people-to-people ties.
This partnership has weathered several transitions and challenges.
We remain focused on the substantive agenda that our two countries have committed to and are confident that the relationship will continue to move forward,' MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said at a scheduled press conference.
However, this trade relation faced a setback when Trump announced 25 per cent tariffs on India. He said that India would face a 25 per cent tariff, "plus a penalty for the above, starting on August 1"; later changed to August 7.
The White House justified the move by citing India's 'obnoxious non-monetary trade barriers,' persistent trade imbalances, and strong energy and defence ties with Russia.
In another remark posted on Truth Social, Trump said, "I don't care what India does with Russia. They can take their dead economies down together, for all I care. We have done very little business with India, their Tariffs are too high, among the highest in the World. Likewise, Russia and the USA do almost no business together. Let's keep it that way..."

Vaishnaw also outlined several upcoming railway projects in Gujarat, including a new Porbandar–Rajkot train, a Rs 135-crore coach maintenance facility at Ranavav station, a railway flyover in Porbandar, two Gati Shakti cargo terminals, and a container terminal at a developing port in Bhavnagar. He highlighted the nation's progress, saying that during the last 11 years, 34,000 km of new railway tracks have been installed under the PM Narendra Modi administration, averaging almost 12 km per day. He described the 1,300 railway stations undergoing renovation as an unprecedented endeavour in the history of Indian Railways. PM Modi's Vision Ashwini Vaishnaw pointed out that India is implementing this change while maintaining train operations and keeping stations operational, which reflects the scope of PM Modi's vision, in contrast to developed nations, where station redevelopment entails completely stopping services. Adding further, he cited the introduction of contemporary trains such as the Vande Bharat Express, the Amrit Bharat Express, and the Namo Bharat Express. Eight Amrit Bharat trains with high-class amenities and reasonably priced tickets have been introduced thus far. According to the minister, passengers have responded favorably to these new trains, which were constructed using cutting-edge technology. With the help of double-engine governments in Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh, significant railway projects are also progressing in those states, in addition to Gujarat, the minister highlighted. ECIs Notice To RJDs Tejashwi Yadav: Poll Body Says This EPIC Number Has Not Been Officially Issued
The Election Commission of India (ECI) has sent a notice to RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav and stated that the voter ID card that he showed in the press conference held on Saturday (August 2) is not officially issued. Tejashwi, the former Bihar Deputy Chief Minister, had made allegations against the poll body over the draft electoral rolls, and claimed that his name is missing, and added that his EPIC number has been changed. Electoral Registration Officer, Patna, wrote to Bihar Assembly's Leader of Opposition (LoP) Tejashwi Yadav, requesting him to provide the details of the EPIC card mentioned by him in the press conference, so that it can be thoroughly investigated. "It is to be informed that in the press conference held on August 2, 2025, you stated that your name is not mentioned in the draft voter list. After investigation, it was found that your name is mentioned at serial number 416 of polling station number 204 (Library Building of Bihar Animal Science University), whose EPIC number is RAB0456228," the notice read. "According to you, from the quote of your press conference, your EPIC number is RAB2916120. As per the preliminary investigation, EPIC number RAB2916120 does not appear to be officially issued," it added. "Therefore, you are requested to kindly provide the details of the mentioned EPIC card (along with the original copy of the card) mentioned by you in the press conference held on August 2, 2025, to the undersigned, so that it can be thoroughly investigated," it elaborated. ANI quoted the Patna DM as saying, "It has been learned from some news sources that the name of the Leader of Opposition, Tejashwi Prasad Yadav, is not in the draft voter list of special intensive revision. An investigation was conducted in this regard by the District Administration, Patna. It has become clear in this that the name of the Leader of the Opposition is recorded in the draft voter list." The news agency, on Saturday, reported, citing ECI sources, that Tejashwi Yadav's name is there in the Draft Electoral Rolls published as per SIR, and no records have been found for the second EPIC number yet. Furthermore, according to ANI, ECI sources rejected Tejaswi Prasad's allegation that his EPIC number was changed, saying that the RJD leader used the Electoral Roll with EPIC No. RAB0456228 for filling his nomination papers on affidavit in 2020. The sources added that he had this EPIC number in the electoral roll in 2015, and his name with this EPIC number exists in the draft Electoral Rolls. Meanwhile, Bihar is gearing up for the Assembly elections that are expected to take place later this year.

Could Donald Trump be nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize?
Claiming that US President Donald Trump had 'ended conflicts', including those between India and Pakistan, and Thailand and Cambodia, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt has said it was 'well past time' that he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. During a press briefing on Thursday (July 31), Leavitt said Trump brokered, on average, about one peace deal or ceasefire per month during his six months in office since January. This is not the first time that Trump supporters have made such calls, even as his track record is debatable, at best. For one, New Delhi has countered his repeated claims of mediation. And would it be unusual for a US President to win the honour? Theoretically, yes, depending on the outcomes of the nomination process. The first stage for any category of the Nobel Prize involves nominations. A range of people — university professors, former Nobel winners in that category, etc. — are deemed eligible by the respective Nobel Committee to submit a nomination for that award. The Norwegian Nobel Committee, which is responsible for awarding the Peace Prize, consists of five individuals appointed by the Norwegian parliament, who are often politicians. Heads of state and members of national assemblies and national governments can send nominations for the Peace Prize. The nominations are sifted through to make a list of valid nominations. For instance, Swedish Parliamentarian and Social Democrat, Erik Brandt, sent a letter to the Norwegian Nobel Committee, nominating Adolf Hitler for the Nobel Peace Prize in 1939. However, it was meant to be ironic and eventually withdrawn. The Nobel committee then creates a shortlist, external consultants research those candidates, and the committee finally makes its choice after discussions. The entire process takes eight months, and the full list of nominees is made public 50 years after the submission. Officially, the Nobel website states that the will of Alfred Nobel, the inventor who instituted the prize, mentioned a broad criterion. The prize was to be awarded to the person 'who shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses'. Over time, the definition of peace has included areas such as gender equality and non-proliferation of nuclear weapons. Yes. In 1906, Theodore Roosevelt received the Peace Prize for having negotiated peace in the Russo-Japanese war in 1904-05, becoming the first US President to be honoured with the award. Woodrow Wilson won in 1920, for his efforts in ending the First World War and helping in creating the League of Nations, which was the precursor to the United Nations. Jimmy Carter won in 2002, for working to find 'peaceful solutions to international conflicts, advancing democracy and human rights, and promoting economic and social development.' US Vice President Al Gore (during Bill Clinton's tenure) was awarded in 2007, for his efforts to obtain and spread knowledge about climate change. The next year, then US President Barack Obama won the prize in a controversial decision, as he had yet to complete even a year of his presidency. The official citation said it was 'for his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples'. Obama himself acknowledged the elephant in the room during his winning speech, saying, 'I would be remiss if I did not acknowledge the considerable controversy that your generous decision has generated. In part, this is because I am at the beginning, and not the end, of my labours on the world stage. Compared to some of the giants of history who've received this prize… my accomplishments are slight.' In Trump's case, he has frequently lamented not being awarded the prize, and world leaders hoping to develop a deeper relationship with the United States have picked up on the concern. Last month, as leaders of five African nations — Gabon, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Mauritania and Senegal — met Trump in Washington to discuss a trade deal, they spoke positively about the possibility of a nomination.
