Muzaffarnagar court sentences 5 to life in 2021 revenge killing
The incident occurred on July 15, 2021, in Aharoda village under the jurisdiction of Jansath police station in Muzaffarnagar.
Mangeram, who had previously served as the village pradhan, was working in his field when he was shot dead and his body was later set afire by the accused.
The convicted individuals include Vijaypal, son of Jabarsingh; Nish alias Ajit and Ankur, both sons of Vijaypal; Govinda, son of Ajaypal, all residents of Aharoda village; and Saurabh, a resident of Dhansari village under Kakaroli police station area.
The court found them guilty under multiple sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including sections 302 (murder), 201 (causing disappearance of evidence), 120B (criminal conspiracy), 147 (rioting), 148 (rioting, armed with deadly weapon), and 506 (criminal intimidation).
In addition to the life sentences, each convict was fined ₹ 40,000, district government counsel Rajeev Sharma confirmed.
'Investigations revealed that the murder was a calculated act of revenge rooted in a decades-old enmity. Several years ago, Mangeram had allegedly been involved in the killing of Jabarsingh, the grandfather of some of the accused. The 2021 attack was orchestrated to settle the scores. Mangeram's son, Yudhveer, had lodged a complaint with police, prompting a swift investigation. The police arrested the accused and submitted a charge sheet, which formed the basis of the prosecution's case,' additional district government counsel (ADGC) Kamal Kumar said.
During the trial, government counsels presented evidence and witness testimonies. The defence also put forth its arguments, but the court concluded that the accused were 'guilty beyond reasonable doubt'.
'On the basis of the evidence available on record, the court on Monday sentenced all five to life imprisonment. They had earlier managed to secure bail. Following court orders, they were taken into custody and sent to jail,' the ADGC said.

2020 Delhi riots ‘larger conspiracy' case: Tasleem Ahmed granted interim bail for 15 days
A Delhi court Monday granted 15 days' interim bail to Tasleem Ahmed, an accused in the 'larger conspiracy' case linked to the 2020 Northeast Delhi Riots. Ahmed had sought interim bail on the grounds that his daughter is suffering from Typhoid and Hepatitis, and said he needs to arrange money for his son's school fee. According to the Delhi Police Special Cell, which was investigating the terror case, Ahmed allegedly gathered local women at the Jafrabad Metro Station, and blocked the road there, following which violence started in Northeast Delhi. During the investigation, Ahmed's name cropped up as one of the conspirators in this case. Protected witnesses disclosed his name in their statements. After terror charges were added in the case, the Special Cell booked 18 people under relevant provisions of the stringent Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, and the Indian Penal Code (IPC). Twelve of the 18 arrested are still in judicial custody, and the case is at the stage of arguments on the charge. On March 6, 2020, the Delhi Police filed a First Information Report (FIR) in the case. Five charge sheets were filed in this case between September 16, 2020, and June 7, 2023. According to the Delhi Police Special Cell, the accused orchestrated a 'larger conspiracy' which eventually led to the violence, leading to the riots. As many as 53 people were killed and 700 injured in the 2020 Northeast Delhi riots. The Special Cell claimed the riots were the result of a months-long 'deep-rooted' conspiracy allegedly hatched after the Citizenship Amendment Bill got a nod from the Union Cabinet in December 2019. The 'conspiracy' here was the creation of 23 protest sites (which operated 24*7) in 'Muslim majority areas' close to mosques and main roads. As per the Special Cell, the accused wanted to 'escalate' the protest to a road blockade, once critical mass is generated, when the then-US President Donald Trump visited Delhi in 2020.

Punjab: Chief Khalsa Diwan office-bearer booked for sexual assault on minor
Chief Khalsa Diwan's (CKD) additional honourary secretary Harinderpal Singh Sethi has been booked allegedly for sexually harassing and assaulting a minor girl who is his close relative, officials said on Monday. The accused is the son of CKD vice president Santokh Singh Sethi. Victim's mother has also been named in the FIR as complainant says one assault took place in her presence. (Picture only for representational purpose) According to the FIR accessed by HT, Sections 354A (sexual harassment), 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code and Sections 8, 10 and 21 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act were slapped at Ranjit Avenue police station on June 26. The 17-year-old victim is based in Delhi. Her mother has also been nominated in the FIR as co-accused. A senior official, who did not want to be quoted, said, 'The complainant had approached the Nizamuddin (Delhi) police station where a zero FIR was registered. After we received a copy of the zero FIR, we initiated an investigation by setting up a special investigation team (SIT) after registering an FIR.' The matter is being thoroughly investigated, he added. According to the FIR, the victim mentioned in her statement that the accused assaulted her sexually first in Amritsar in 2022 and then in Delhi in presence of her mother in 2023. Meanwhile, Bhagwantpal Singh Sachar, executive member of the CKD, termed it a stigma on the Sikh organisation. 'CKD president Inderbir Singh Nijjar should expel him from the organisation with immediate effect. Thousands of daughters are studying in CKD institutions. Women are working there in great numbers. How will they feel in such an environment?' he questioned. The CKD runs more than 50 educational institutions, orphanages, old age homes and other socio-religious centres.

Re-certification of ‘Udaipur Files' pending, Delhi HC told
New Delhi: The Delhi High Court was on Monday informed that the producers of the film 'Udaipur Files - Kanhaiya Lal Tailor Murder' had applied to the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) for a re-certification of the movie which was likely to be considered soon. The producers further said the six cuts suggested by the Centre had been made in addition to a disclaimer. Noting the submission that the film's re-certification was pending and a request for adjournment was made on behalf of one of the petitioners, a bench of Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya and Justice Tushar Rao Gedela posted the hearing for July 30. The petitions were filed by Jamiat Ulema-i-Hind president Maulana Arshad Madani and Mohd Javed, who is an accused in the Kanhaiya Lal murder case. Two petitions related to the movie row came before the High Court post a Supreme Court direction. The top court directed the petitioners to move the high court against the Centre's revisional order of giving nod for the film's release. The producers of the film had moved the top court after a high court bench previously stayed the film's release. The apex court on July 25 said the film-makers' appeal against the high court order staying the film's release was infructuous for they had accepted the July 21 Centre nod for the film's release, subject to six cuts in its scenes and modifications in the disclaimer. After High Court on Monday asked the CBFC counsel whether the movie was re-certified, it was informed that the film was approved with some cuts. The counsel for the film producers said the movie was approved with six cuts and one disclaimer and the certification was pending. The bench noted since there was no re-certification till now, the producers couldn't release it without it. Observing there was no urgency, the court posted the hearing for July 30. Udaipur-based tailor Kanhaiya Lal was murdered in June 2022 allegedly by Mohammad Riyaz and Mohammad Ghous. The assailants later released a video claiming the murder was in reaction to the tailor allegedly sharing a social media post in support of former BJP member Nupur Sharma following her controversial comments on Prophet Mohammed. The case was probed by the NIA and the accused were booked under the stringent Unlawful Activities Prevention Act, besides provisions under the IPC. The trial is pending before the special NIA court in Jaipur.
