With Covid-19 cases in India crossing 1,000, policyholders must assess whether their health insurance policies offer adequate coverage and possess the features required to deal with this threat.
Gaps uncovered
The limitations of many retail health policies were exposed during the first and second waves. 'These included sub-limits on room rent, and exclusion of non-payable items like PPE (personal protective equipment) kits,' says Bhaskar Nerurkar, head – health administration team, Bajaj Allianz General Insurance.
The rigid definition of hospitalisation was another impediment. 'Domiciliary treatment was not commonly covered across plans at the time,' says Siddharth Singhal, head of health insurance,

Happy pets, happy vets

PUNJAB : Has it ever occurred to you that our four-legged friends also deserve top-tier health treatment? Thanks to advancements in veterinary medicine, over 24,000 to 25,000 canines undergo treatment under one roof at the Multi-speciality Veterinary Hospital of Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (GADVASU) in Ludhiana every year. From rare heart surgeries, dialyses and eye operations to dental treatment, skin care and general check-ups, this vet facility has got our furry buddies covered. They even maintain a blood bank for dogs. However, the care is not limited to dogs. As many as 30,000 to 32,000 animals, including canines, get treated at the hospital annually. Many of them report cases of tick fever, dehydration, hairfall, skin problems and parvovirus enteritis, besides other infectious and non-infectious conditions. Talking to this newspaper, Dr Jitender Mohindroo, Director of Clinics, said that around 80 dogs are treated at the facility for various disorders and fractured or dislocated bones every day. 'It is common for canines to sustain injuries in road mishaps or get hurt after falling from a great height,' he says. But it's not like misfortune only chases behind dogs. Dr Mohindroo has observed a new trend emerge in the post-Covid years. 'An average of four exotic cats are brought here for treatment daily, he says, noting that many of the felines land up here after being attacked by dogs. Dr Gurpreet Singh Preet of the Medicine Department says, 'Around 70 to 80 dogs are brought to the medicine OPD daily.' He adds, 'In summers, dogs tend to suffer from skin and tick-borne diseases as well as kidney and liver infections. In winters, they mostly contract viral diseases.'' Dwelling on the care diseased and wounded animals receive here, Dr Arun Anand, HoD of Veterinary Surgery, shared, 'We performed a rare heart surgery on a two-year-old beagle a couple of weeks back as the dog was suffering from patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) — a heart condition in which a blood vessel fails to close shortly after birth. The dog was examined in the medicine department, where it underwent routine as well as advanced tests, such as echocardiography.' He added, 'It was a one-hour-long surgery, after which it was kept under observation for four days at the critical care unit.'

Trump's attorney general drops fraud case tied to Covid vaccinations

US Attorney General Pam Bondi on Saturday dropped a case against a Utah doctor accused of falsifying Covid-19 vaccination certificates and destroying more than $28,000 worth of government-provided Covid-19 vaccines. Bondi, in a statement posted on X, said Michael Kirk Moore Jr., of Salt Lake County, Utah did not deserve the jail time he was facing. Moore was indicted by a federal grand jury in 2023 and his trial had begun earlier this month. 'Dr. Moore gave his patients a choice when the federal government refused to do so. He did not deserve the years in prison he was facing. It ends today,' Bondi said. Covid-19 vaccine skeptics have been embraced by the Trump administration. The Pentagon, for example, has sought to re-enlist servicemembers who were ousted for refusing to be vaccinated during the pandemic. Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who for decades has sown doubt about the safety of vaccines contrary to evidence and research by scientists, wrote on X in April: 'Dr. Moore deserves a medal for his courage and his commitment to healing!' According to a 2023 statement from the US Attorney's Office in Utah, Moore allegedly ran the false certifications out of a plastic surgery center. His activities allegedly included administering saline shots to minors, at the request of their parents, so the children would think they were receiving Covid-19 vaccines, the statement said. Marjorie Taylor Greene, a US lawmaker from Georgia and staunch Trump supporter, had championed dropping the case against Moore, who she called a hero in a statement on Saturday. 'We can never again allow our government to turn tyrannical under our watch,' she said in a post on X. The latest move by Bondi comes amid scrutiny of her firings of senior Justice Department officials who worked on investigations into Trump, stoking accusations of political retribution in a department whose mission is to enforce US laws.
