Penang govt: No interference in mosque committee appointments
Deputy Chief Minister I Datuk Dr Mohamad Abdul Hamid (PKR - Batu Maung) said that the nomination and appointment procedures were set by the Penang State Islamic Religious Council (MAINPP), in accordance with approved legal provisions.
"To ensure there is no undue interference in this selection, nominations must be proposed by a nominator and supported by at least one seconder, both of whom must be chosen by the congregation during the nomination meeting," he said when responding to a question from Mohd Yusni Mat Piah (Pas –Penaga) regarding the process for selecting mosque chairpersons and committee members in Penang.
According to Mohamad, a key requirement for nomination is that the candidate must have been a permanent resident in the mosque's congregation area for at least three months and must be present at the nomination meeting.
He added that the 2024 Nomination Procedures for Mosque Congregation Committees in Penang were presented and approved by MAINPP on Nov 18, 2024, and received royal assent from the Yang di-Pertuan Agong on Dec 2, 2024.
"The appointments for the 2026 to 2028 term will be fully managed by the Mosque and Surau Management Division of the Penang Islamic Religious Affairs Department (JHEAIPP)," he added.
Meanwhile, on the appointments for the State Mosque and district mosques, Mohamad said a new structure approved in September 2024 stipulated that the JHEAIPP director would serve as chairperson of the State Mosque, while District Religious Administrative Officers will lead the district mosques.
"Committee members at the state and district levels will also include civil servants from various agencies such as the police, the Public Works Department (PWD), the Education Department, the District Office, local authorities, and representatives from suraus within the respective congregations.
"MAINPP hopes that the appointed committees will assist in managing their congregations in line with the Penang State Islamic Religious Administration Enactment (Amendment 2023) and work to strengthen unity and welfare among Muslims in their areas," he said.

Mohamad said among the key focuses in terms of international diplomacy to be implemented in line with the 13MP was to strengthen Malaysia's role as a principled, resilient and vocal country for the developing world. He said this will be achieved through Asean, Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (Apec), BRICS and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC). "The 13MP will help establish Malaysia as a regional hub for investment, technology and talent, including through the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone and Asean Connectivity by Rail. "It will also help in mainstreaming economic and technological diplomacy, including in the National Semiconductor Strategy, AI and Renewable Energy agenda," he said. Mohamad added that the 13MP will also help expand diplomatic networks to new markets such as BRICS, Africa and Central Asia and strengthen exports, investments and internationalisation of strategic sectors such as halal, franchising and the digital economy. The plan will help modernise cross-border and immigration facilities through the upgrading of Immigration, Customs, Quarantine and Security Complexes and land ports in line with the principles of sovereign and efficient border diplomacy. "It will continue to highlight Malaysia's role in humanitarian and human rights issues, through a Madani approach centred on human dignity and universal justice. "Malaysia not only wants to be respected but also trusted in the eyes of the world as a country that upholds universal values and plays an active role towards a more peaceful, prosperous and peaceful world," he said.

Mahathir was referring to the Turun Anwar rally last Saturday, which was held to call for Anwar's resignation. About 18,000 people took part in the rally, according to police, although the organisers, PAS Youth, claimed that more than 200,000 participants were present. Syahredzan urged Mahathir to respect the country's democratic process and the timeline of the current Parliament. 'Elections will come when the time is right. But that time is not now. The parliamentary term hasn't even reached its maturity. 'To Mahathir, please – your time has passed. We still respect you, but now is the time for others to lead the country,' he added. SIS removes ‘Islam' from name after Selangor Sultan's advice, stands firm on women's rights
PETALING JAYA: Women's rights group Sisters in Islam (SIS) has officially removed the word 'Islam' from its public name following advice from the Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah. Its executive director, Rozana Isa, said the decision was made during an extraordinary general meeting on 11 July, and the group will now go by its registered name, SIS Forum (Malaysia). 'Although we've dropped the word 'Islam' from our pen name, we remain committed to advocating for gender equality and justice in Islamic family law,' she said in a statement. 'At the end of the day, what matters most is our work for Muslim women and all Malaysians,' she added. Previously, Sultan Sharafuddin had expressed disappointment with parts of a Federal Court ruling regarding the application of a July 31, 2014 fatwa. The ruling stated that the fatwa did not apply to SIS Forum (Malaysia) as a company or institution, but only to individuals. In a statement on the Selangor Royal Office Facebook page, the Sultan emphasised that the use of the word 'Islam' by SIS Forum (Malaysia) in its name and publications could cause confusion among Muslims. Following the court's decision, the Sultan, as the Head of Islam in Selangor, urged the group to stop using 'Sisters in Islam' in any of its materials or platforms. 'This is to ensure that the word 'Islam' is not used freely for the benefit and interests of the company,' the statement said. Rozana expressed hope that the decision from the extraordinary general meeting would finally end the long-standing dispute over the group's name and allow it to continue working respectfully with all parties. 'SIS Forum (Malaysia) will continue engaging scholars, community leaders, and institutions to ensure no woman is left behind in the pursuit of justice,' she said. 'A woman is equal in the eyes of God, so she should also be seen and treated as equal in the eyes of man.'
