Mark Nicholas' proudest memory tinged by sadness as 2005 Ashes marked end of era

Nicholas was the broadcasting anchor charged with carrying a rapt nation through many of the key moments of a contest that remains seared into the memories of cricket fans.
Heading up an elite commentary cast featuring the likes of the late Richie Benaud and Tony Greig, as well as Sir Geoffrey Boycott, Michael Atherton and Michael Slater, Nicholas' debonair style crystallised many of the most thrilling moments as England regained the urn for the first time in 18 years.

One passage in particular lives on, Steve Harmison's vital dismissal of Michael Clarke at Edgbaston and the subsequent call of: 'One of the great balls! Given the moment, given the batsman, given the match…that is a staggering gamble!'
Speaking to the PA news agency two decades later, the current MCC chair reflects: 'You hear a lot of soundbites from that series, even 20 years on. Some of what I said didn't always make much sense, but I think the best commentary is reactive. When you plan to say certain things it doesn't work as well.
'David Bowie once gave an interview about 'Life on Mars' and said, 'It's a good song but I've no idea what I was writing about'. I sort of know what he means, you can be creatively successful completely unintentionally.
'I cannot tell you how often I get stopped, people telling me with all their hearts that 2005 and our coverage of it was what got them into cricket.
'Of course, it was the fact that England beat Australia after so long and that it was so thrilling. But to hear people, even England cricketers, say you helped get them into the game…you can't be more flattered than that.
'Some of us brought hyperbole, some did the deep analysis, Richie was minimalism brilliantly applied. I remain more proud of that time than anything else in my career, there was a certain element of mythology for all of us that summer, players and commentators alike.'
Yet 2005 was not just the high water mark for Nicholas' BAFTA-winning team, it was also the end of the road.
Sky television took over exclusive broadcast rights of English cricket in the aftermath, with home Tests having lost their 'Crown Jewel' status as a category A listed event.
It remains a source of regret to Nicholas that the surge of public interest, which saw 7.4 million viewers tune in to the Oval finale, instantly encountered a paywall.
'I do feel desperately sad that an opportunity was blown. It will never leave me,' he says.
'They had to make sure Test match cricket stayed (free to air), even if it was in a joint broadcast, and if that meant a bit less money then so be it.
'I'm not anti-Sky at all, I'm glued to their coverage three or four nights a week. But it was a bad misjudgement. Cricket was a very powerful thing at that moment and it was the time to make sure that continued.
'I was asked to co-host the celebration at Trafalgar Square with David Gower and I remember walking home through London with my wife after the crowds cleared. All the way back I was feeling an extraordinary contradiction of euphoric happiness at the summer that had gone and the terrible sadness of losing the coverage.'

Peter Andre poses with acting legend after bagging major TV drama role

Following major backlash to his latest silver screen role, Peter Andre is trying his hand at acting once more, this time on TV—and he's starring alongside one of the greats. The 90s pop star caught heat earlier this year when the trailer for Jafaican dropped, a movie in which Peter plays a small-time con artist immersing himself in Jamaican culture to pull off a risky scam. It involved the Australian singer, 52, wearing dreadlocks and putting on an accent, with social media going to town with their criticism and ripping into the 'outrageous' plot. A few months on, though, and Peter is back with a very different role. It's been confirmed that he'll star in The Sunshine Murders, a murder mystery drama set to air on Channel 5 in September. Teasing the job in his OK! Magazine column last October, he penned: 'I have also got a part in a new Channel 5 drama as one of the lead characters, which I'm excited about. 'I can't reveal the name of it just yet or give much away, but I start filming next month and can't wait to get stuck in. Watch this space!' Now, we have a look behind-the-scenes of the action, thanks to images shared with the cast. Shot by Cork Films, the series will also guest star English acting legend Stephanie Beacham, Dimensions star Camilla Rutherford, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows actor Nick Moran, and EastEnders' Nina Wadia. In a smiley photo, the Mysterious Girl hitmaker sits beside Coronation Street star Stephanie, 78, with him wearing a tracksuit while she is glammed up in costume to play Lady Gloria Whitten-Soames. Another sees him in the dressing room with his co-stars, as well as supportive son Junior, 20, who seemingly visited his dad on set. As for Peter's part in the show, he'll be seen like never before, donning all the professional get-up of a Greek pathologist tasked with examining the murder victims. When Peter's casting was confirmed earlier this month, he was seen on the official poster for The Sunshine Murders, wearing his white lab coat and blue rubber gloves. We know that his character's name is George Constantinos, but that's all for now, as further plot details are being kept hush-hush. Peter will likely be hoping for a warmer response to the character of George than that of Jafaican's Gary Buckle, aka Gazza. Upon facing the wrath of the internet, Peter spoke out in defence of the film, which also starred Wil Johnson, Jamie Lomas, and Oliver Samuels. Ahead of the movie's release celebrations in Queensland, Peter was asked by Channel 7 in Australia: 'The trailer did see some headlines about an English-born, Australian-raised actor playing a Jamaican character; you know about that? Are you surprised there's been some mixed feedback here, or were you anticipating that?' He responded: 'Well, to be fair, I mean, I think it's good to get all sorts of feedback. I mean, this is not … it's my first lead role, but I've done quite a few roles before. And all of them, I've played different characters. 'So for me, it's acting—I get to do something light-hearted, something funny. Something that, y'know, is the kind of film I'd wanna watch. So it's almost like a little bit self-indulgent in the sense that I get to do something that I've really, really wanted to do.' Peter went on to praise director Fredi Nwaka for allowing him to play someone 'very, very different'. In a further conversation with Metro, the Insania vocalist insisted it was 'never the intention' to 'genuinely offend' anyone. He also recalled his Get Down On It with Kool & The Gang, which he re-released in 1996. In the music video, he wore an Afro wig. 'I was just a bit surprised that this was the one that seemed to cause controversy, and not the role that I played in Fredi's last film, where I actually had to play someone that was racist,' he added, referring to the 2022 film On the Other Foot, in which he played a member of the EDL. To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video 'But again, you have to listen to people; if someone genuinely feels wronged, we understand. We never intended that, ever.' More Trending Prior to the controversial Jafaican film, Peter's acting CV consisted of various film and TV roles. While he's known for portraying himself on reality TV shows like I'm A Celebrity and fly-on-the-wall series with ex-wife Katie Price, he also had roles in movies such as The Inheritance (2019) and SnapCatch (2023). And he's no stranger to the stage, having performed a dual role of Vince Fontaine and Teen Angel in Grease on the West End. Got a story? Everton eye Jack Grealish move and hold key advantage in battle for unwanted Man City star

Jack Grealish is being targeted by Everton and could decide to make the move due to his desire to stay at home in Cheshire, where he lives with his partner and young daughter Jack Grealish is being targeted by Everton, who hope to use the Manchester City star's desire to stay at home to their advantage. ‌ England international Grealish has no future at the Etihad Stadium, and was omitted from City's squad for the Club World Cup in the United States this summer. He has been told he is free to find another club, but City will hope to secure a permanent exit for the 29-year-old they signed from Aston Villa for £100m in 2021. ‌ Italian champions Napoli have been linked with a move for Grealish, who would link up with his former City team-mate Kevin De Bruyne were he to complete a move to Naples. ‌ But The Independent report that the 39-times capped wide man would rather stay in the north of England at his Cheshire home he shares with partner Sasha Attwood and the pair's young daughter. Seeking some stability after moving from the Midlands, Grealish may decide that a loan move to Everton is the perfect chance for him to try and regain the form that saw City make him the most expensive English player ever at the time when they bought him four years ago. Cheshire is a favourite with footballers who play for the north west clubs due to its easy commuting distance to the training facilities for both the Manchester and Merseyside outfits. Grealish has won three Premier League titles and the Champions League at City, but he has seen his influence on Pep Guardiola's wane in recent years. He made just 20 Premier League appearances in each of the last two seasons, scoring only once in 2024-25. Everton would see the signing of Grealish as a huge coup, with manager David Moyes said to be willing to allow him off the leash and and free him from the constraints he has often been under when playing for the demanding Guardiola. ‌ The Merseysiders will move into their new Hill Dickinson Stadium at Liverpool's Bramley-Moore Dock at the start of this season after their men's side left Goodison Park. That fresh start and new stage could also appeal to Grealish as he seeks to get his career back on track, and he could target potentially winning his England place back in time for 2026 World Cup next summer.
