'Superman' director reveals reboot will tackle politics and kindness, tells 'jerks' to 'screw' off
"Superman is the story of America," Gunn told The Sunday Times in a recent interview. "An immigrant that came from other places and populated the country, but for me, it is mostly a story that says basic human kindness is a value and is something we have lost."
The character, first introduced in 1938, was born from the imagination of writer Jerry Siegel and artist Joe Shuster in Cleveland, Ohio. In the comics, Superman is the sole survivor of the planet Krypton, sent to Earth by his parents as their world faced destruction.

The film, set to hit theaters on July 11, will serve as a reboot of the 2013 film Man of Steel and is intended to launch a new cinematic universe for the DC franchise. Actor David Corenswet stars as the new Superman, with Rachel Brosnahan playing Lois Lane.
When asked whether he considered how the movie's political themes might resonate differently across the country — from "blue state" New York, aka Metropolis, to Superman's rural roots in Kansas — Gunn acknowledged the contrast.

"Yes, it plays differently," he said. "It's about human kindness. And obviously, there will be jerks out there who are just not kind and will take it as offensive just because it is about kindness. But screw them."

While Gunn emphasized the film's political and moral undertones, he also noted its sense of fun and fantasy — mentioning a flying dog in a cape as part of the film's lighter elements.
"Yes, it's about politics," he said. "But on another level, it's about morality. Do you never kill no matter what — which is what Superman believes — or do you have some balance, as Lois believes? It's really about their relationship and how differing moral perspectives can pull two people apart."
Gunn did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital's request for comment.Original article source: 'Superman' director reveals reboot will tackle politics and kindness, tells 'jerks' to 'screw' off

Elon Musk Is Compared to a Dictator in Luca Guadagnino's New Movie
New details about Luca Guadagnino's Artificial movie, including what role will play in the film, have been revealed. It was announced last month that Guadagnino will direct a movie about OpenAI for Amazon MGM Studios. The film will revolve around the period at the artificial intelligence company in 2023 that saw CEO Sam Altman fired and rehired in a handful of days. The cast of the movie includes Andrew Garfield, Monica Barbaro, and Yura Borisov. According to Puck, Elon Musk's role as an 'early OpenAI investor turned bitter rival' is explored in the film, though it is not yet clear who will play him. 'He's a minor character, especially after he tries to merge OpenAI into Tesla and then pulls his investment when he's rebuffed,' the article notes. 'But Elon, as famous for loving movies as he is for suing people, is probably not gonna like this portrayal — nor, likely, will his Grok chatbot (Unfortunately for Grok, there are no pro-Hitler references in the script). At one point, Murati says of Musk: 'Elon's not so bad, as far as dictators go.'' Puck also reports that Artificial, which was written by Simon Rich, centers more on Ilya Sutskever than it does on Altman. 'The film, which begins rehearsals next week in Italy, with a planned 2026 release, is actually the story of Ilya Sutskever, the idealistic and naive Israeli machine learning engineer (played by Anora breakout Yura Borisov) who co-founded the nonprofit. After several key breakthroughs, as depicted in the script, Sutskever is leveraged, marginalized, and ultimately betrayed by both his power-hungry friend Altman and the larger Silicon Valley community — with potentially disastrous consequences for all of humanity.' It is worth noting that Puck got this information after reading a 'recent draft' of the Artificial script; meaning there could still be edits that are made, given that the movie is not yet in production. Everyone Has Same Reaction to Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor
Nicholas Hoult's performance as Lex Luthor in Superman has received significant praise from fans. The newly released DC Universe film marks the English actor's second time playing an iconic character in a comic book superhero movie franchise. He previously portrayed Hank McCoy/Beast in Marvel and 20th Century Fox's X-Men films released between 2011 and 2019. Nicholas Hoult's performance as Lex Luthor has received immense praise from fans, with some even saying that his iteration of the character is not only the best version but also very comic-accurate. Fans discussed Hoult's performance as Luthor in a recent Reddit thread. One fan commented, 'He was so petulant it was amazing.' Another fan added, 'He's the best live-action Lex, and it's not even close.' They even suggested he was the 'first truly comic-accurate Lex.' One fan stated that he was the best Lex Luthor since Michael Rosenbaum's portrayal of the character in Smallville, in their opinion. Notably, Hoult appeared on an episode of Rosenbaum's podcast Inside of You, released in March 2024. Moreover, during his appearance, the Skins alum revealed that Rosenbaum's Luthor was the first iteration of the character he had seen in any medium. Further, Hoult told Rosenbaum that his take on Luthor was 'the best,' which the Smallville actor was surprised to hear but appreciated nonetheless. A fan shared that Hoult's Luthor was one of the best performances they had seen in a superhero movie. ' Just completely nailed the character and controlled every scene he was in,' they added. Nicholas Hoult follows a long line of acclaimed actors who have also taken on the role in live-action. He is preceded by Rosenbaum, Gene Hackman, Kevin Spacey, Jon Cryer, Jesse Eisenberg, Lyle Talbot, Michael Cudlitz, Titus Welliver, and John Shea. Superman is currently playing in theaters and holds an 82% fresh score and a 95% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. The film also stars David Corenswet, Rachel Brosnahan, Nathan Fillion, Edi Gathegi, Anthony Carrigan, Isabela Merced, Sara Sampaio, Skyler Gisondo, and Maria Gabriela de Faría. Box Office: ‘Superman' Saves the Day for DC Studios With Solid $115M-$120M Domestic Opening
James Gunn's Superman is headed for a possible record domestic box office debut of $115 million to $120 million after topping Friday's chart with $56.5 million, including a hefty $22.5 million in previews. The movie appears to be succeeding in rebooting DC Studios and its most iconic comic book franchise. Gunn is in a unique position, being both the film's writer-director and the co-head of the Warner Bros.-owned DC, which he co-runs with Peter Safran. Overseas, Superman is launching to $100 million-plus from 78 markets after earning $40 million midweek from its first raft of international markets for an early global total of $96.5 million through Friday. More from The Hollywood Reporter Box Office: James Gunn's 'Superman' Flying to $55M Friday for $115M-$120M U.S. Opening 'Superman' Scene-Stealer Edi Gathegi Explains How His Mister Terrific Role Atones for a Broken 'X-Men' Promise Stop, Already, With Superhero Movies Ending With Big, Dumb CG Smash Battles Superman will be the first superhero film to cross $100 million in its North American bow since Marvel Studios and Ryan Reynolds' Deadpool & Wolverine launched to $211 million in summer 2024 ('superhero fatigue' has become part of the Hollywood lexicon). And it's the first DC title to cross $100 million in eight long years since Wonder Woman debuted to $103.3 million in 2017. And if the $225 million tentpole comes in north of $116.6 million, it will beat Zack Snyder's 2013 film Man of Steel ($116.7 million) to rank as the biggest domestic launch ever for a solo Superman pic, not adjusted for inflation. Snyder's mash-up Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice scored the biggest DC opening of all time when earning $166.6 million over Easter weekend in 2016. In 2006, Bryan Singer's Superman Returns unfurled midweek in North America for a six-day start of $84 million, including $52.5 million over the three-day weekend, which is considered the film's official opening number. Gunn's movie is only the third Hollywood title of 2025 to launch north of $100 million after fellow Warners tentpole A Minecraft Movie, which opened to $162.8 million, and Disney's live-action Lilo & Stitch, which sewed up $146 million in its debut. Crossing the century mark is no small feat for any movie in the post-pandemic era, and particularly for the troubled superhero genre. Until now, Gunn was best known for being the mastermind behind Marvel's blockbuster Guardians of the Galaxy franchise. The second Guardians boasts his biggest domestic opening at $146.5 million. Superman isn't likely to beat that record, but it could supplant 2013's Guardians threequel ($118.2 million) to rank as his second best, not adjusted for inflation. Heading into the weekend, Superman's opening had been the subject of intense scrutiny. Ditto for the hype around the film; even President Donald Trump joined in on the action by posting a meme of himself on social media as the new Man of Steel. While tracking services predicted Superman would gross north of $130 million, Warners and DC were more conservative in forecasting $100 million-plus. And even rival studios cautioned that the marketplace is over-saturated with male-skewing fare, between Universal's Fourth of July blockbuster Jurassic World Rebirth and F1: The Movie, from Apple Original Films in partnership with Warners. According to Friday exit polls, 68 percent of Superman ticket buyers were male, while nearly two-thirds of the audience were between the ages of 18 and 34. While fanboys are known for rushing out on opening weekend, older moviegoers are likely to bide their time and avoid the crowds. And gender-wise, the makeup of the audience could even out to some degree. The pic should enjoy a long run thanks to strong word-of-mouth. Critics and audiences alike are embracing the film. The pic earned an A- CinemaScore from moviegoers, the same grade given to Man of Steel and ahead of Superman Returns' B+. The audience score on Rotten Tomatoes is a stellar 94 percent, while the critics' score is a pleasing 82 percent. The event title is also playing to an ethnically diverse audience, another key advantage. Superman stars David Corenswet in the titular role, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor. Rounding out the cast are Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Beck Bennett as Steve Lombard, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho and Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific. The movie marks the first DC film entry for Gunn since he took over the reins of the superhero label with Safran in November 2022. Other upcoming DC Studios projects include HBO's Green Lantern series, Lanterns, and a Supergirl movie due out in 2026. Elsewhere at the box office, Jurassic World Rebirth looks to collect nearly $39 million in its sophomore outing for a North American war chest of $230.9 million through Sunday. The tentpole grossed a notably better-than-expected $147.8 million in its first five days, including $92 million for the weekend proper, after stomping into theaters Wednesday, July 2, to take advantage of the long holiday. Globally, it's clearing the $400 million mark this weekend. Joseph Kosinski's F1: The Movie is parked safely in third place behind Superman and Jurassic World. The Formula One pic is on course to earn another $10 million this weekend as it prepares to jump the $140 million mark in North America. Through Friday, the Formula One movie's global haul was $358.3 million. Family-friendly pics How to Train Your Dragon and Elio will round out the top five. Numbers will be updated Sunday morning.
