Miley Cyrus Shares How She Hid Drug Expenses As ‘Vintage Clothes' From Her Accountant
Miley Cyrus discussed her past drug use and the chaos of her 2015 album on the Every Single Album podcast.
Miley Cyrus is well-versed in the art of reinvention. From her days as a Disney Channel star to becoming a chart-topping artist, the 32-year-old has built a career marked by transformation. Recently, on the Every Single Album podcast, Cyrus shared her early experiences with drugs and the turmoil that influenced her 2015 experimental album, Miley Cyrus & Her Dead Petz. She provided fans with a candid glimpse into what she now considers a chaotic period in her life. 'The drugs were the biggest cost," she confessed. 'Which, to hide those from my accountant, we called them vintage clothes."
Cyrus didn't hold back from sharing specifics. 'She [the accountant] would get these checks. That happens on touring all the time," Miley explained. 'And every time she saw me, she'd be like, 'Where's that, like, $15,000 original John Lennon T-shirt that you bought?' And I'd say, 'Oh, it's upstairs.'" The singer continued, 'We just really want to protect it. It's really delicate. The fabric…got to take care of it! So I bought a lot of vintage clothes that year." That 'vintage" wardrobe, of course, was a euphemism for her heavy drug use.
Reflecting on her past, Cyrus is filled with gratitude. 'I'm so glad I survived that time in my life," she said. 'I would definitely not encourage anyone else to go this hard, but the fact that I got through it… I'm very glad I got to do it." Since then, the singer has embarked on a journey of sobriety. In a 2017 interview with Billboard, she described herself as 'evolving" after quitting marijuana. She has been sober since 2019, except for a brief relapse during the pandemic. Nowadays, sobriety is non-negotiable: 'That's like my God. I need it," she says.
On the professional front, Cyrus recently moved fans with an emotional rendition of The Climb, a nostalgic ballad from Hannah Montana: The Movie (2009) that once defined her Disney era. She also humorously noted how her drummer boyfriend, Maxx Morando, has been eagerly waiting since middle school to perform this song.
