Dolphins reportedly trade Jalen Ramsey, Jonnu Smith to Steelers in exchange for Minkah Fitzpatrick

The Miami Dolphins have traded cornerback Jalen Ramsey to the Pittsburgh Steelers after two seasons in South Beach, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.
Ramsey confirmed the deal in a video on X.
In exchange for Ramsey, the Dolphins received five-time Pro Bowl safety Minkah Fitzpatrick, per ESPN's Adam Schefter. Tight end Jonnu Smith was also shipped to the Steelers in the deal, per Schefter.

The transaction happened after the Dolphins publicly made it known that they were willing to trade the 10-year veteran.
After a disastrous end to their season, Dolphins general manager Chris Grier said moving Ramsey was the "best chance to help us win not only just this year but in the future as well."
"Really after a couple weeks of discussions between ourselves internally and Jalen and his representation, we decided that it was probably in the best interest for all parties to move forward," Grier said. "I will say these decisions aren't done quickly and they're not taken lightly because we spent a lot of time this offseason working through this, talking through things. At the end of the day, Jalen did not ask for a trade.
"We went through the process, and I just felt that after numerous conversations and then talking last week with Jalen and his agent, that it was best to move forward, and it was best interest of the Miami Dolphins and for Jalen Ramsey."
In his second season with the team, Miami finished with an 8-9 record and missed the playoff for the first time in three years. Ramsey tallied 60 tackles, a sack, and two interceptions for seven yards.
Once he was made available, Ramsey was linked to the Los Angeles Rams, with whom he helped win the Super Bowl in 2020. The FSU product spent four years in Jacksonville and LA before joining Miami in 2023.

Though Rams head coach Sean McVay expressed interest in a reunion, it was the Steelers who struck first for the veteran cornerback. The two franchises were the most involved for Ramsey, per Rapoport.
The move shores up an already strong Steelers' defense, and gives them another talented veteran player in what is expected to be Aaron Rodgers' final season in the NFL. With Rodgers in tow for one year, the team needs to do everything in its power to contend in 2025. Ramsey should help them accomplish that.
Ramsey signed a three-year, $72 million extension in 2024 and was due to earn $24.2 million this season, per Over The Cap. With the trade, Ramsey will receive a $1.5 million raise, bringing his salary to $26.6 in 2025.
Ramsey's contract became less of a hindrance to trade after June 1, as his $25.213 million cap charge dropped by $18.468 million.

He's under team control with the Steelers through 2028.
Dolphins acquire Minkah Fitzpatrick from Steelers
Fitzpatrick, 28, returns to Miami after six seasons away. After being selected by the Dolphins in the first round of the 2018 NFL Draft, Fitzpatrick played just a season and a half with the franchise before he was traded to the Steelers during the 2019 NFL season.
After a promising rookie season, Fitzpatrick was moved to nickelback to kick off his second season under then-Dolphins coach Brian Flores. Fitzpatrick, upset about his role, requested a trade, which the Dolphins eventually accommodated later that season. He thrived after joining the Steelers, earning his first All Pro nod.

Fitzpatrick continued to thrive in Pittsburgh over the next five seasons, making two more All-Pro teams and four Pro Bowls from 2020 to 2024.

Former Patrick Mahomes teammate makes admission on Tom Brady

Former Kansas City Chiefs safety Tyrann Mathieu gave an honest response when asked if he believed quarterback Patrick Mahomes was the greatest of all time. While he does think the three-time Super Bowl champion is closing in on that title, he isn't ready to put him ahead of former New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady. "I would say he's a great quarterback, but greatest of all time, I think that's still reserved for Brady," Mathieu said on Up & Adams. "And I think with Brady, that's just longevity. That's respect. That's just playing against this guy on the biggest stages. He was one of the most competitive, accurate. He just had a single mindset to win—win by any means necessary. He was always a challenge to go up against. Being the greatest of all time, I don't think it's like an eight, nine, 10-year thing." Brady, the seven-time Super Bowl-winning quarterback, has beaten Mahomes twice in the postseason—once in the 2018 AFC Championship Game and once more at Super Bowl LV. He also won a Super Bowl with two different football teams after leaving the Patriots for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2020. Mahomes is still only 29 years old and not completely out of the race. Mathieu acknowledged his former teammate might one day go down as the greatest of all time if he stays on his current trajectory. But that's a big hill to climb in a league where teams improve every year. Follow Patriots Wire on Twitter and Facebook. Rashawn Slater's 4-year, $114M deal with Chargers further enriches Howie Roseman's genius

Lane Johnson is now the 7th highest-paid offensive tackle in the NFL, and Jordan Mailata is No. 8 after Rashawn Slater's 4-year, $114M Deal with the Chargers The #Chargers are finalizing a blockbuster extension with standout OT Rashawn Slater, per The Insiders, locking in one of their best young gets a 4-year, $114M deal to make him the highest-paid tackle in a deal done by Patrick Collins and Tommy Condon of CAA. Howie Roseman stays ahead of the curve, so that his star players won't feel left behind when their peers around the NFL sign new deals. Jordan Mailata and Lane Johnson are All-Pros and two of the league's most dominant players. Still, Johnson is now the 7th highest-paid offensive tackle in the NFL, and Jordan Mailata is No. 8 after Rashawn Slater's 4-year, $114 million Deal with the Chargers. The $28.5 million per year makes Slater the highest-paid offensive lineman by average annual pay in a contract in NFL history. Slater has been extension-eligible since last offseason, but general manager Joe Hortiz and the Chargers chose to wait. In contrast, others at his position in his 2021 draft class signed lucrative extensions, including the Detroit Lions' Penei Sewell (4 years, $112 million, $85 million guaranteed) and Minnesota Vikings' Christian Darrisaw (4 years, $104 million, $67 million guaranteed). Left Tackles Right Tackles Since being selected by Los Angeles in the first round (13th overall) of the 2021 NFL Draft, Slater has started all 52 career appearances at left tackle, serving as the blind-side protector for quarterback Justin Herbert. In 2024, he started 16 games, including the postseason, helping keep Herbert upright for the offense to commit just eight turnovers, setting a franchise record and tying for the second-fewest offensive turnovers in a single season in NFL history. As a rookie in 2021, Slater started all 16 appearances at left tackle, earning second-team All-Pro status from The Associated Press. Slater was also named the starting left tackle for the AFC in the Pro Bowl, becoming the first rookie tackle to be named an all-star since 2012. Philadelphia got its stars under contract for the foreseeable future, and at a bargain. Mailata's 85.5 PFF overall grade in Week 17 led all offensive tackles, and he's the highest-graded offensive tackle in the NFL (95.8). Mailata leads the NFL in run blocking grade (94.9), and he's second in pass blocking (91.7), according to PFF. Last season, Johnson ranked 1st among NFL right tackles in PFF pass-blocking grade (88.1), pressure percentage (2.2%), and knockdown percentage (0.2%). He allowed zero sacks and one quarterback hit in 451 pass-blocking snaps.
