Kota Kinabalu: Sabah Umno Chief Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin urged the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) to demonstrate greater transparency in the enforcement of its Ops Gasak operation, particularly concerning the mandatory use of commercial liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cylinders by food premises. 'This is crucial to ensure that any weaknesses or confusion are not hidden but instead addressed openly and responsibly,' he said in a statement.

He urged KPDN to adopt a more inclusive and trader-friendly approach, while also calling on the State Government to be proactive in explaining the matter to the public. 'It is the State Government's responsibility to provide complete information and assist small traders in applying for the Scheduled Controlled Goods Permit (PBKB). 'Such efforts will not only strengthen compliance with regulations but also protect the survival of small businesses, which are the backbone of the local economy,' he said. He added that if the government deems the use of domestic cooking gas unsuitable for certain food premises, then guidelines and implementation conditions must be clearly and transparently communicated. 'There must be a balance between enforcement and consideration of on-the-ground realities. That balance is the foundation of administrative efficiency and public well-being. GEORGE TOWN, July 1 — Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said the government will act on all complaints of profiteering and price manipulation following the implementation of new electricity tariffs today. He said the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) has launched Ops Kesan 4.0 from today to ensure there is no profiteering. 'I am always in communication with KPDN Minister Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali to provide the latest updates if netizens or the public raise any issues on price manipulation,' he said after officiating the launch of YTL Communications' Tanjung Asam six-way multi-operator core network (MOCN) base station here. Fahmi said he believed prices would not be affected by the new electricity tariffs. Earlier, he reiterated that a total of 23.6 million consumers could see lower electricity bills with the new tariffs coming into effect today. He said the new base tariff is 19 per cent lower than previously expected. 'Those who use less than 1,000 kWh a month will not only see the same bill amount, but there's a possibility that it will be lower,' he said. He added that the most significant change is that, starting today, 2pm to 10pm is considered peak hours. 'We can save by using high-energy consumption electronics and electrical appliances outside of peak hours,' he said. He explained that peak hours coincide with the period when most factories are in full operation, so the government is encouraging consumers to use most of their electrical and electronic appliances during off-peak times.

Ringgit strengthens as US dollar weakens further in July

Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Dr Mohd Afzanizam Abdul Rashid said the yields on two- and 10-year US Treasury notes declined by one and five basis points, respectively, as expectations grew that the US Federal Reserve (Fed) may ease monetary policy in the second half of the year. 'President Trump continues to assert on social media that interest rates should be lowered. This reinforces the view that the next Fed chair may adopt a more dovish stance,' he told Bernama. Meanwhile, Brent crude slipped 0.24 per cent to US$67.61 per barrel. Market attention is on the upcoming OPEC+ meeting on Sunday, where member countries are expected to raise output quotas to reclaim market share. At the open, the ringgit was mixed against major currencies but mostly higher versus its ASEAN peers. It weakened against the Japanese yen to 2.9190/9335 from 2.9156/9206, slipped versus the British pound to 5.7617/7898 from 5.7597/7693, and eased against the euro to 4.9457/9698 from 4.9290/9372. New detailed TNB electricity bills help consumers track energy usage

The updated billing format aims to improve transparency and help consumers understand their energy consumption patterns. Under the new system, bills will display three key components: Generation Charge, Network Charge, and Retail Charge. According to TNB's official website, 'The Generation Charge covers fuel costs, generation capacity, and global fuel price adjustments. The Network Charge involves operational costs for transmission and supply system maintenance, while the Retail Charge includes customer service, billing, and account management costs.' This change is part of the Incentive-Based Regulation (IBR) mechanism under Section 26 of the Electricity Supply Act 1990. The detailed breakdown allows customers to track spending more accurately and make informed decisions about energy use. For July 2025, customers will receive a transitional bill reflecting two different tariff periods: usage before June 30 (old rates) and from July 1 onwards (new rates). 'The July 2025 transitional bill will be available within 24 hours via the myTNB app and portal, while printed bills will be delivered within seven working days,' TNB stated. To assist users, TNB has also introduced an online Electricity Bill Calculator on its website, enabling customers to estimate costs under the new structure.
