Techie demands flat, Rs 12 cr maintenance, and BMW from rich husband after 18-month marriage; SC says earn yourself

The Supreme Court on Tuesday said that qualified women should support themselves financially and not rely on interim maintenance from their husbands. The observation came during a hearing in an alimony case, where a woman had demanded a luxury apartment in Mumbai, Rs 12 crore as maintenance, and a BMW car—following just 18 months of marriage. According to reports, Chief Justice of India (CJI) BR Gavai strongly questioned the woman's demands, pointing out that she is well educated and can earn for herself. The CJI noted that the woman is an IT professional with an MBA degree, and pointed out that such qualifications make her employable in major tech hubs like Bengaluru and Hyderabad. 'You're an IT person. You've done your MBA. You're in demand... Why don't you work also?' he asked. "But that house is in Kalpataru... one of the good builders. You are an IT person. You have done your MBA. You are in demand in Bengaluru, Hyderabad... Why don't you work?" the Chief Justice was quoted as saying by the NDTV. "You had a marriage for just 18 months. And you also want a BMW?" CJI added. The woman, in response, claimed her husband is "very rich" and had filed for annulment of the marriage on the grounds that she is schizophrenic. 'Either you get a flat free of all encumbrances or nothing,' the CJI was quoted as saying by Bar and Bench. 'When you are highly educated and decide not to work out of your own volition…' Live Events This case echoes a similar ruling by the Delhi High Court in March this year. Justice Chandra Dhari Singh had stated on March 19 that the law does not support idleness. Interpreting Section 125 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC)—which provides for maintenance of wives, children, and parents—the judge emphasized that it aims to ensure fairness and protection, not to encourage non-working behavior among qualified individuals. In that verdict, the High Court said, 'A well-educated wife, with experience in a suitable gainful job, ought not to remain idle solely to gain maintenance from her husband. Therefore, interim maintenance is being discouraged in the case as this court can see potential in the petitioner to earn and make good of her education.' In another case in December 2024, The Supreme Court has ruled that a wife cannot seek alimony to equalize the wealth of her partner in the event of a divorce . 'It cannot be expected of the husband to maintain [his wife] as per his present status all his life. If the husband has moved ahead and is fortunately doing better in life post-separation, then asking him to always maintain the status of the wife as per his own changing status would be putting a burden on his personal progress,' a Supreme Court bench of Justices B.V. Nagarathna and Pankaj Mithal said then.

Why don't you earn? Supreme Court on Rs 12 crore, Mumbai flat, BMW alimony demand

The Supreme Court on Tuesday pulled up a woman who demanded Rs 12 crore and a BMW car from her husband in alimony and observed that well-educated women should earn for themselves rather than depending on husband's money for their maintenance. Chief Justice of India BR Gavai was hearing an alimony case where a woman demanded a house in Mumbai and Rs 12 crore as maintenance in alimony after getting separated from her husband within 18 months of Justice of India BR Gavai, while hearing the alimony battle, said, 'Aap itni padi likhi hai. Aapko khudko mangna nahi chahiye aur khudko kama ke khana chahiye. (You are so educated. You should earn for yourself and shouldn't ask for it)."During the hearing, CJI Gavai questioned the scale of her demand, stating, 'Your marriage lasted only 18 months, and now you want a BMW too? One crore every month?' Highlighting the woman's qualifications, an MBA and experience as an IT expert, the Chief Justice remarked that she should not depend on alimony. 'If you are educated, you should not beg for yourself. You should earn and eat for yourself,' he woman countered that her husband is very wealthy and has even sought an annulment of the marriage by alleging she suffers from schizophrenia. 'Do I look like a schizophrenic?' she asked the advocate Madhavi Divan, appearing for the husband, argued that alimony cannot be claimed in such an extravagant manner. She pointed out that the woman was already living in a Mumbai flat with two parking spots and could generate income from it. She said, "She has to work also. Everything cannot be demanded like this."'The BMW she is dreaming of is 10 years old and has been discontinued,' Divan Gavai noted the husband's past income, Rs 2.5 crore salary and Rs 1 crore in bonuses during his employment, and directed both parties to submit complete financial documents. The bench also emphasised that the woman could not claim rights over property of her husband's woman alleged that the husband's actions led to her job loss and that he had filed a false FIR against her. To this, CJI Gavai assured, 'You file the FIR, we will cancel that too. We will direct that no party will initiate any criminal proceedings against each other.'As the hearing concluded, the court offered the woman two options — either accept a burden-free flat or Rs 4 crore and seek employment in IT hubs like Pune, Hyderabad, or Bengaluru. 'There is demand in IT centers,' said the CJI.- Ends

Why Tesla's ride into India's EV market won't be a smooth one

Tesla has finally made its entry into the Indian market, opening its first showroom at Maker Maxity Mall in Mumbai's Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) on July even as the global electric vehicle (EV) giant begins its journey in the world's third-largest auto market, experts warn that the road ahead will be anything but entry comes at a time when Tesla is facing its biggest drop in global sales to date. Its domestic sales in the US fell 6.3% in the second quarter of 2025, the third straight quarterly in China dropped nearly 12% in the same period. In Europe, Tesla has seen a steady five-month fall in deliveries, partly due to political backlash and rising competition from cheaper Chinese EVs. In fact, Tesla's market share in Europe slipped to 1.2% in May, down from 1.8% a year 50% of Tesla's revenue comes from the US, while over 20% is from China. The remaining 30% is spread across other global markets. With shrinking numbers in its top markets, India now holds fresh promise, but also serious IS TESLA OFFERING IN INDIA?Tesla has introduced the Model Y in India, priced at Rs 60 lakh for the rear-wheel drive variant and Rs 68 lakh for the long-range version. These models are being sold as completely built units (CBUs), which means they attract heavy import duties, adding to the comparison, the same Model Y starts at $44,990 (around Rs 38 lakh) in the US, 263,500 yuan (around Rs 30 lakh) in China, and 45,970 euros (around Rs 41 lakh) in pricing puts Tesla in competition with luxury EV models such as the Mercedes-Benz EQB, BMW iX1, Volvo EC40, and Kia EV6 in STRUGGLE AGAINST HOMEGROWN COMPETITIONJahol Prajapati, research analyst at SAMCO Securities, believes the Indian EV market is already fiercely competitive.'Tesla's arrival in India has electrified the market, both in terms of buzz and intent. The brand is global royalty. Its design is flawless. Its tech, unmatched. And yet, here's the truth most people won't tell you: this won't be an easy ride for Tesla in India,' he Tesla's name may carry global appeal, Prajapati pointed out that the company's offering lacks the price-to-performance advantage many Indian buyers seek. Source: SAMCO Securities 'The Tesla Model Y is priced close to Rs 60 lakh. In contrast, Mahindra, Tata, and BYD are fielding EVs in the Rs 19–30 lakh range, offering nearly equal, sometimes greater, value on range and performance. Mahindra's BE 6 delivers 557 km, BYD eMAX7 offers 530 km, and Tata Harrier EV and XEV 9e are not far behind. Tesla offers 500 km.'STRUCTURAL CHALLENGES MAY HURT GROWTHAnother major hurdle for Tesla is the lack of local manufacturing. Without setting up a factory in India, the company is unlikely to lower prices or become more competitive in the mass market segment. 'India is not a market that falls for logos. It's a market that worships value for money,' said also flagged the slow rollout of EV charging infrastructure, which could restrict Tesla's growth. While the ecosystem is improving, it is still not developed enough to fully support Tesla's premium offerings.'Homegrown brands like Tata Motors, Mahindra & Mahindra, and BYD India aren't just selling EVs, they're building ecosystems. These firms have already established service networks, trust, and a deep understanding of price-sensitive Indian customers,' he OUTLOOK STILL POSITIVE FOR INDIAN BRANDSPrajapati stressed that investors in Indian EV stocks need not panic.'Tesla is a powerful brand, but it doesn't mean it will take over the market overnight. The entry of a big global player like Tesla will only push more innovation and investment into the space. This is a moment of opportunity for Indian firms," he said that the Indian EV story would be led by affordability, ease of access, and strong after-sales service—areas where Tata and Mahindra have already built strong IN INDIA ISN'T EASYJSW Group chairman Sajjan Jindal also shared a similar view earlier this at an event in March, Jindal said Tesla and CEO Elon Musk would face tough competition from Indian carmakers. 'He can't be successful in India! We Indians are here. He cannot produce what Mahindra can do, what Tata can do,' he he acknowledged Musk's global achievements, Jindal said India is a complex market where global success does not guarantee local growth. 'To be successful in India is not an easy job,' he said.- EndsTune InMust Watch advertisement
