No, You Probably Don't Need a MacBook Pro

We all have that one friend who's tech-savvy that everyone turns to for advice, especially ahead of big sale events like Amazon Prime Day. Well, that's me. I'm that guy.
When people find out what I do for a living, everything gets turned up to 11. I review laptops for my job, and almost everyone needs one. If people don't know where to begin, here's how I guide them through the process of picking the right Apple MacBook—where I recommend you start. Start With the MacBook Air
You might think narrowing your choice of laptop down to a MacBook would help, but these days, choosing an Apple laptop isn't as simple as it ought to be. You've got two sizes of MacBook Airs, two sizes of MacBook Pros, and all the chip configurations, ranging from the M4 to the M4 Max. That doesn't even include the plethora of older models that flood the search results of online retailers.
That's why I like to keep it simple. When someone comes to me, asking which MacBook to buy, I start them with the 13-inch MacBook Air M4. It's the laptop most people should buy, which is why it's at the top of our Best Laptops and Best MacBooks guides. The retail price is $999, but it's almost always on sale for at least $899, and at the time of writing, it's down to $849. While it doesn't come with much storage (only 256 GB), it does start with 16 GB of RAM (or unified memory, as Apple calls it).
From there, I make them give me reasons they should get something bigger or more powerful. I don't want my actual friends and family spending a dime more than they should, and I know some will think they need to upgrade to the MacBook Pro, even if it's just the M4 model.
Let's be real. You likely don't need the extra performance of the M4 Pro or M4 Max chips. Unless you edit video, produce music, or shoot photos for a living , it's not worth spending hundreds (or thousands) more to speed up video renders. The M4 MacBook Air is capable of far more than people realize. Upgrading to the M4 Pro and M4 Max is primarily about improving graphics and multicore CPU performance, but it's only something creative professionals will get much out of. Reasons to Upgrade
A part of the problem is that we're still operating as if it's 2015. A decade ago, it wasn't just that certain tasks were faster on a 16-inch MacBook Pro; it was that the old MacBook Airs couldn't perform these at all. If you were an amateur musician, artist, or programmer, you were forced into saving up for a MacBook Pro or forgoing those hobbies for the time being. Apple Silicon changed that equation entirely, and generation after generation, its M-series chips get more capable. Now, we're at the point where the M4 is quite capable, even in the fanless body of the MacBook Air. Photograph: Brenda Stolyar
That's not to say there aren't reasons to upgrade to other MacBooks. For example, if you're a heavy multitasker and never plan to use an external monitor, there's a case to be made for the extra screen real estate of the 15-inch MacBook Air. Also, there's a reason Apple sells a 14-inch MacBook Pro with the M4 for hundreds of dollars more than the Air, despite performance being nearly equivalent.
If you don't own a television and plan to have your MacBook be your primary entertainment device for watching shows, the brighter, more vibrant display and richer speakers of the Pro will offer a better experience. Or maybe you hate the idea of occasionally using a USB hub or dongle to get photos from your camera to your computer. I don't think that's worth $300, but if it's something you'll be doing daily, I can understand that. What About Older Models?
I wouldn't worry too much about older MacBook models, such as the M3 or M2 MacBook Air. I haven't seen them be discounted enough to be worth the drop in performance and reduced external display support. The one older MacBook I recommend is the M1 MacBook Air, which came out back in 2020. You can still buy it new for $649, or find refurbished models for under $500. While I still recommend most people save up for the M4, the M1 MacBook Air remains one of the best laptops you can buy at that price, despite being almost 5 years old.
There's not much more to it than that. The M4 MacBook Air is a well-rounded little laptop, and it's the one most people should buy. At $849, it's never been cheaper.

Apple (AAPL) Rises After Jefferies 'Upgrade' on 15% iPhone Sales Surge

July 2 - Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) was upgraded to 'Hold' from Underperform by Jefferies, as the bank sees potential upside in third?quarter iPhone sales. Shares climbed about 1% in early trading on Wednesday after the upgrade. Jefferies analysts, led by Edison Lee, pointed to data from Counterpoint Research showing a 15% year?on?year increase in global iPhone volumes during April and May, the strongest growth since 2021. They noted 12.5% growth in the March quarter, driven in part by Chinese demand pulled forward through discounting. We estimate iPhone sales in China rose about 19% year?over?year during the June promotions, driving roughly 10% growth in the quarter, Lee wrote, adding that Apple appears determined to defend market share with targeted discounts and government subsidies. On that basis, Jefferies lifted its Q3 forecast to 49.4 million units, implying 9% growth versus its prior 1% outlook. However, the firm cut its September quarter projection by 11% to 46.3 million units, down 6% year?on?year, citing a lack of new features and the absence of AI as a game changer. Apple's fiscal third?quarter results, covering April 1 to June 30, are due around July 31, with analysts forecasting revenue of $88.67 billion and earnings per share of $1.42. Investors will be watching for any upside surprises in iPhone growth to sustain momentum. This article first appeared on GuruFocus. Don't wait for Prime Day — every Apple Watch is discounted in the early Prime Day sales

If you've been waiting for the Prime Day deals to drop to invest in one of the best Apple Watches, I've got good news — nearly every watch is on sale early. I review fitness trackers and running watches for a living, and not a day goes by without me closing my rings on my Apple Watch. Below, I've hand-picked the Apple Watch deals worth shopping right now. My top pick? The Apple Watch 10 is just $299 on Amazon, which is $100 off and one of the best Apple Watch deals ever. It's the best smartwatch for most people, and similar to having an iPhone on your wrist. Plus, it's a whopping savings that probably won't be beaten on Prime Day. I've highlighted my top deals below and make sure to check out our early Prime Day deals live blog for the best deals right now. The Apple Watch Series 10 is the best Apple Watch for fitness and health tracking. It boasts Apple's latest holistic tech and features, including sleep apnea detection, and a gorgeous new display that's easy to read while working out. This deal is on the smaller, 42mm version, without cellular. It's a great price, and I'm not sure it'll get much cheaper on Prime Day. If you're looking for the Apple Watch 10 with GPS and Cellular (this allows you can make calls and use data or apps when you don't have your iPhone or Wi-Fi.) The best deal is on the 42mm with the sport loop, which is discounted from $499 to $399 right now on Amazon. The Apple Watch Ultra 2 is Apple's most hardwearing smartwatch with double the water resistance of its siblings and an all-titanium design. This deal is on the version of the watch that comes with a blue alpine loop in small, but having tested them all, I'd say this is the most comfortable watch strap, so I'd recommend. It's a fantastic price for Apple's best watch for fitness fanatics. The cheapest Apple Watch to buy ahead of Prime Day is the Apple Watch SE GPS, which doesn't have all the same bells and whistles found on its pricier siblings, but it's still a mighty capable smartwatch. It comes in two sizes, and this deal is on the smaller 40mm version, with the midnight sport band. If you're after GPS and Cellular, which allows you to make calls and check your apps without your phone nearby, the best deal right now on the Apple Watch SE is in the 40mm version, with the midnight sport band. It's a great watch for less than $240, so grab it while you can.

The week's top Apple deals include the newest iPad at a record-low price

Here's a little secret from someone who tracks Apple prices daily: You rarely, if ever, have to pay full price — especially with Amazon Prime Day on its way. Right now, some of Apple's most popular products are on sale, including the newest iPad and iPad mini (and both of them just hit their lowest price ever).AirPods, on the other hand, have crept back up in price (though all four varieties are still discounted). Still, I expect those prices to fall again once Prime Day hits. So if you're eyeing a deal, it's worth checking back — or pouncing now if the price is right. Apple deals can be as unpredictable as the summer weather, and they rarely stick around for long. If you have Amazon Prime, you'll get free shipping, of course. Not yet a member? No problem. You can sign up for your free 30-day trial here. (And by the way, those without Prime still get free shipping on orders of $35 or more.) The reviews quoted above reflect the most recent versions at the time of publication.
