The Yankees dropped this weekend's Subway Series and entered Monday's off-day three games out of first place in the AL East, having lost 16 of their past 23.
Cody Bellinger's game-saving play on Sunday aside, their defense has been spotty, which has not helped a pitching staff with substantial questions in the rotation and bullpen. A lineup that is strong but has holes has not been able to compensate.

The silver lining concerning the club's flaws being exposed is the timing: about three and a half weeks before the trade deadline.
'As trite as it sounds or as corny [as it sounds], these are the moments that build character within a team and also help you find out and define what the heck you need moving forward,' manager Aaron Boone said this weekend, 'and where do you need to change? Or where do you need to go out and explore for things?'

School 'incredibly proud' after fourth-place finish at national table cricket final
THE coach of William Howard School's table cricket team has said that she is 'incredibly proud' after they finished fourth in the national finals at Lord's. The team, consisting of nine students, competed in the national finals which were held at the 'home of cricket' in London on Wednesday, June 25. After only suffering one defeat in five matches in the pool stage to the 2024 national table cricket champions, Cheshire's The Wirral Grammar School for Boys, William Howard School prepared for a bronze medal showdown. William Howard School's team captain Andrew in-action (Image: Supplied) However, despite some valiant fielding, the team of Brampton students were defeated by Bedfordshire's Chiltern Academy, with the immediate disappointment soon replaced by pride at finishing fourth in the country. The team was overseen at Lord's by Tracey Croucher, who has been coaching table cricket at William Howard School for almost 10 years. "They had to do well in three competitions to reach these National Finals, and their success is down to their dedication, attending additional practices every week prior to competitions, and their incredible teamwork.' "Huge congratulations to the team, captain Andrew, vice-captain Nicky, Samuel, Eve, Summer, Emily, Amy, Harry and Lewis. "Thank you to Lord's Taverners and all those working with them for offering students such an amazing opportunity. Oilers' Darnell Nurse hints at pending trade away from Edmonton
Darnell Nurse has a way with memes. A report indicated that the Edmonton Oilers' veteran defenseman wasn't going to waive his no-trade clause if a deal came up. Nurse posted on his Instagram with the meme featuring the words, "Why you always lying?" At 30 years old, Nurse has just experienced back-to-back losses in the Stanley Cup Finals. Maybe he wouldn't mind a fresh start. The 6-foot-4 lefty still gets the job done, coming off 28 assists in 76 games in 2024-25. He has 300 career points (81 goals, 219 assists) and likely still has a number of solid years ahead of him. Loperfido homers, Blue Jays beat White Sox 8-4 for 9th consecutive win
CHICAGO (AP) — Joey Loperfido homered and drove in three runs, and the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Chicago White Sox 8-4 on Monday night for their ninth consecutive win. Addison Barger and Nathan Lukes also connected as AL East-leading Toronto improved to 27-10 in its last 37 games. Bo Bichette had two hits and All-Star slugger Vladimir Guerrero Jr. walked three times. At 53-38, the Blue Jays matched the franchise record for most victories before the All-Star break. It's the longest win streak for the team since an 11-game run in August 2015. José Berríos (5-3) pitched six innings of one-run ball, bouncing back nicely after he struggled in a no-decision against the New York Yankees on Wednesday. The right-hander improved to 16-6 with a 2.96 ERA in 27 career starts against Chicago. Mike Tauchman had three hits and two RBIs for the last-place White Sox, who won two of three at Toronto last month. Colson Montgomery, one of the team's top prospects, went 0-for-3 with a walk in his home debut . The Blue Jays opened an 8-1 lead when they scored five times in the sixth. Barger hit a two-run drive off Sean Burke for his 12th homer, and Loperfido chopped a two-run single over a drawn-in infield. Burke (4-8) was charged with six runs and six hits in five-plus innings.
