US golden boy Luke Clanton can take Ludvig Aberg charge to Ryder Cup big stage
Superkid makes pro debut in exactly same place as Swede and can repeat his trick
Lightning Luke Clanton is walking exactly the same path as Ludvig Aberg.
Now the hotly-discussed topic is whether or not the new golden boy of golf in the United States can emulate the Swede and make a remarkable charge straight to The Ryder Cup.
Clanton has teed it up as a professional for the first time at the RBC Canadian Open having earned his card by accruing 20 PGA Tour University Accelerated points between last year's US Open and this year's Cognizant Classic.
The 21-year-old had incredible success on the PGA Tour as a college golfer and notched four Top 10 finishes in 2024 which made him the the first amateur since Jack Nicklaus in 1961 with three or more in a year.
Clanton is now on the big stage as a fully-fledged pro and already there is talk of forging his way into Keegan Bradley's side for the clash against Europe in September.
If that seems unlikely, the template is there with Aberg. The Scandinavian's brilliant college career saw him rocket into the professional ranks and take his first steps exactly two years ago at the Canadian Open, just like Clanton now.
And Aberg was in Rome just three months later to assist Europe to success in Rome after captain Luke Donald took a calculated gamble on his brilliance.
Clanton now has a pathway to do the same with doors open for spots at this stage in Bradley's side for the New York blockbuster and, ironically, Clanton and Aberg are paired together with Rory McIlroy for the opening two days in Caldeon.
The kid is taking it one step at a time and said: 'The expectations are always going to be pretty high for sure.
"But I think I have a great team behind me with the process that we have. It's the first start as a pro, so it's a little bit nerve-wracking.
"We've handled ourselves really well through my amateur career. And we're going to try to do the same as a pro.
'It's an unbelievable moment. We've been waiting for this moment, for a couple months now.
"But I was so focused with the team in college golf and trying to win national championships and trying to play the best I can. It was definitely hard.
"But I'm excited to get my pro debut going and see how it goes. But it's just amazing to be here. It's a dream come true to be out here in general to play on the PGA Tour.'
Although Clanton finished two shots worse off than Aberg on his first day, he outgunned McIlroy by one with his level-par effort and admits it was a thrill as he stated: 'Being paired with Rory is no joke.
"The crowds are amazing. Watching him hit drivers and iron shots, it's cool.
"I watched him growing up my whole life, so I guess you could say he's like the Tiger Woods of my life.
'I didn't sleep very much. To meet Rory and play with him and be out there with Ludvig as well, two great ball strikers.
"First pro start with Rory McIlroy, it's definitely a day to remember.'

Sporting refuse to budge on Gyokeres fee – but admit Arsenal target WILL leave ‘unless he has worst agent in the world'
ARSENAL have been told by Sporting Lisbon they will NOT budge on their Viktor Gyokeres valuation in another transfer window hammerblow. And the Portuguese giants' president Frederico Varandas has warned the Gunners: pay up or miss out. 4 Viktor Gyokeres finally loos set for a Prem switch this summer Credit: Getty 4 Benjamin Sesko remains another option for Arsenal and Co Credit: Getty Boss Mikel Arteta has earmarked the striker as a top target to bolster his attack in this window, alongside Red Bull Leipzig frontman Benjamin Sesko – but both deals are currently in limbo. Gyokeres, 27, has been left furious with Sporting over an alleged breach of a gentleman's agreement that would let him leave for around £60m – lower than his release clause of around £80m – and is now refusing to play for the Portuguese side again. Arteta was hoping to land the Swede for a bargain price, but Varandas has doubled down on only selling the star for a fair market value, citing Arsenal's move for Real Sociedad's Martin Zubimendi and Manchester United's pursuit of new-boy Matheus Cunha and Brentford's Bryan Mbeumo. Varandas has even threatened to keep Gyokeres in Portugal if Arsenal continue to low ball, hoping to receive close to £70m to seal the switch. We do not need to sell him, but we remain sensitive to the dreams of Viktor and any of our athletes. 'After weeks of meetings, we are not asking for the release clause and will be reasonable regarding the price we ask for Viktor. Today, I believe there is a strong probability he will leave. 'We have been watching the market and I saw [Martin] Zubimendi, who is six months younger than Viktor, leave for £51million. The Gunners were confident of doing their business quickly this summer after months of preparation by boss Mikel Arteta and new sporting director Andrea Berta. But inflated asking prices and broken gentlemen's agreements have derailed those plans and left Arsenal frustrated. Sesko believed he would be allowed to leave RB Leipzig for around £60million, while SunSport understands Gyokeres was told £59m would be enough to seal his own exit. But those price-tags have gone up, leaving Arsenal debating whether they represent value for money. While the players' camps are also growing restless, knowing the Gunners can only sign one of them. So what next? Will Arsenal keep waiting in the hope of fees eventually going down? Or turn to other targets, like Frankfurt's Hugo Ekitike? Whatever they decide, with pre-season looming and the fixtures already out, Arteta will be desperate for them to move quickly to avoid another nearly season. 'Given the demands we consider fair, I believe Viktor could leave – unless he has the worst agent in the world, which is hard for me to believe, because he is one of the best footballers in the world. Arsenal are set to announce the arrival of midfielder Zubimendi, and are in talks to sign Valencia centre back Christian Mosquera for around £20m. Varandas said: 'If Viktor stays, we will be very, very happy – and it will be a problem for our rivals. 'We are completely prepared to move for our target if Viktor leaves.' Gyokeres is currently on holiday after international duty with Sweden and is due to report back for pre-season in Lisbon on July 7 unless a deal is struck before then. Arsenal are in a similar mess with 22-year-old Sesko, who is angry over Leipzig's hard-ball stance, demanding £70m despite a lower initial gentleman's agreement in January. 4 TRANSFER NEWS LIVE - KEEP UP WITH ALL THE LATEST FROM A BUSY SUMMER WINDOW

Sporting Lisbon chief slams two Man Utd transfers in Viktor Gyokeres update
Viktor Gyokeres is looking to leave the Portuguese champions this summer after scoring more than 50 times and Manchester United - as well as Arsenal - are both keeping tabs on his availability Sporting Lisbon president Frederico Varandas has aimed a subtle dig at Manchester United's signing of Matheus Cunha - and their pursuit of Bryan Mbeumo - while addressing Viktor Gyokeres' possible departure. The Swede is looking to leave the Portuguese champions this summer after scoring more than 50 times and the Manchester outfit - as well as Arsenal - are both keeping tabs on his availability. The biggest stumbling block to Gyokeres' departure is Sporting's willingness to let him depart and how much they will ultimately demand before deciding to let him leave for pastures new. United have already spent £62.5million to land Cunha - their only summer signing. Brentford have rejected the same fee as they look to keep hold off Mbuemo, who is also on United's radar. Sporting have used those two figures as a reference point when it comes to the demands they make for their leading light. He said: "We have been watching the market and I saw [Martin] Zubimendi, who is six months younger than Viktor, leave for €65million. I saw Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo, both forwards but who, in my opinion, do not have Viktor's market value or quality, being negotiated for around €75million. "Given the demands we consider fair, I believe Viktor could leave – unless he has the worst agent in the world, which is hard for me to believe, because he is one of the best footballers in the world." The president has also knocked back suggestions that there was a gentleman's agreement in place which allowed Gyokeres, who has scored 97 times in 102 games in Lisbon, to leave for less than his release clause. Varandas refused to confirm the exact figure he expects but made it clear they will not accept a cut-price deal for the ex-Coventry City frontman. He said: "The player knows, the agent knows, and I can guarantee, with absolute certainty, that Viktor will not leave for €60million plus €10million in add-ons. It's not about trying to gain something, it's that he simply will not leave for that – absolutely will not." United were able to land Cunha due to a release clause in his contract but their pursuit of Mbeumo, and potentially Gyokeres, has seen clubs demand huge fees and drag out negotiations in an effort to maximise their profits. Arsenal 'suddenly' consider signing £85m Liverpool and Chelsea transfer target
Arsenal have stepped up their interest in Eintracht Frankfurt attacker Hugo Ekitike, with club bosses growing increasingly frustrated in pursuit of their primary attacking targets. The Gunners are intent on signing an out-and-out number nine this summer having received widespread criticism for their inactivity over the last two transfer windows. The loss of both Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus to injury last season only amplified calls for Arsenal to strengthen in the transfer market and there is mounting pressure on sporting director Andrea Berta to find a solution up front. Viktor Gyokeres, 27, has been placed at the top of Arsenal's wishlist on the back of an exceptional season in Portuguese football, in which he scored 54 goals in 52 games to help Sporting win a domestic double. However, Sporting's flat-out refusal to lower their demands for Gyokeres has complicated Arsenal's pursuit of the prolific Swede, prompting the Gunners to strongly consider RB Leipzig's Benjamin Sesko as an alternative. But Arsenal have encountered similar difficulties in their attempts to hash out a deal for Sesko, 22, with Leipzig rejecting the north Londoners' opening bid worth around (£46.8m) – plus €10m (£8.5m) add-ons – for the Slovenia international. It's understood the Bundesliga outfit are holding out for an offer of between €80m and €100m (£68m and £85m) for their star striker. According to German publication Bild, this has led Arsenal to 'suddenly' turn their attentions to Ekitike, who enjoyed an eye-catching first full season with Eintracht last term. The report claims Ekitike is a 'serious' option at the Emirates and the 23-year-old Frenchman will come to the fore should the Gunners give up hope of landing either Gyokeres or Sesko. As has been the case with both Gyokeres and Sesko, though, Ekitike's asking price could prove problematic as Eintracht are said to be demanding an eye-watering fee of €100m (£85m) from potential suitors. 'If the price isn't right, then he'll just stay with us,' Eintracht sporting directorMarkus Krosche told Wiesbadener Kurier when quizzed on Ekitike's future earlier this month. 'We don't have to sell Hugo.' While Krosche has refused to rule out the possibility that Ekitike could leave, he insists a sale will only be possible Eintracht's demands for the 'exceptional' striker are met in full this summer. 'He's one of the most interesting strikers on the European market,' he added. 'Hugo has to decide that [his future]. I'm glad we have him. More Trending 'If he decides otherwise, that's our belief: if a player develops faster than us, then we let him go – as long as our demands are met.' 'Hugo is an exceptional player who played a major role in our qualification for the Champions League,' he added. 'He certainly still has a lot of potential for development as he's only 22 years old.' Ekitike – who has also attracted interest from Liverpool and Chelsea in recent months – is tied into a contract at Eintracht until June 2029.
