Activist flags rampant encroachment, seeks freeze on Karnataka's forest plans
Even as the Union govt continues to release crores of rupees under centrally sponsored schemes to support conservation efforts and clears forest diversion proposals, forest land in Karnataka is vanishing at an alarming pace.
In a formal complaint addressed to the ministry of environment, forests and climate change (MoEF&CC) recently, Dharwad-based conservationist Raghavendra urged the Centre not to approve the draft working plans submitted by various forest divisions of Karnataka until all illegal encroachments are cleared and officials responsible are held accountable.
Citing several Supreme Court orders and MoEF&CC guidelines, Raghavendra reminded the Centre of a key ministry directive issued on May 3, 2002, which made the approval of forest working plans and diversion proposals contingent on the eviction of encroachments. That directive was based on an apex court ruling on Nov 23, 2001, which sought strict enforcement of forest protection measures across all states.

In his complaint, a copy of which is with TOI, Raghavendra pointed out that 1,385 new cases of forest encroachment were reported across Karnataka in 2023-24 alone.

These figures, mentioned in the forest department's annual report, highlight that the issue remains rampant in forest circles such as Bengaluru, Belagavi, Hassan and Shivamogga. The trend, he noted, has continued unabated for the past 7-8 years. In 2022-23, as many as 992 fresh encroachment cases were recorded from similar regions.
Blaming the forest department's inaction, Raghavendra stated, "Despite orders from Supreme Court and directions from both the Union and state govts, forest encroachments aren't being cleared in a time-bound manner — barring a few recent cases...
Chief conservators of forests (CCFs) and conservators of forests (CFs) have failed to convene quarterly meetings to monitor encroachments or assist field staff in eviction efforts.
"
Coincidentally, in June 2025, the principal chief conservator of forests (head of forest force) had issued a circular to all forest circles, instructing deputy conservators of forests, CFs, and CCFs to clear at least 10,000 acres of encroached forest land in the 2025-26 fiscal.
Forest minister Eshwar Khandre told TOI he has been maintaining zero tolerance towards forest encroachments. "There are no fresh cases; we've been cracking down on any incident of encroachment involving more than three acres and reclaiming those lands. Only in a few cases have there been delays due to legal hurdles, which we are working to resolve at the earliest," he explained.

Yogi gifts handcrafted Shivling to Modi
Chief minister Yogi Adityanath presented Prime Minister Narendra Modi with a handcrafted Shivling set that incorporates a blend of three Geographical Indication (GI) certified crafts of Kashi — metal repousse, gulab meenakari, and metal casting – during his visit to Varanasi on Saturday. Chief minister Yogi Adityanath presents a handcrafted Shivling to Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Varanasi on Saturday. (ANI PHOTO) The artwork includes a Shivling in an 'argha' (ritual container), a five-hooded snake, Nandi (the bull), 'prasad' offerings, a 'kalash' filled with Ganga water, a trident (trishul), and sandalwood ash (chandan bhasm), said GI expert and Padma Shri awardee Dr Rajni Kant. The creation stands 18 inches tall and 15 inches wide, placed on a meenakari platform. The artwork was crafted over a week by three Kashi-based artisans and metal repousse artists — Anil Kasera and Raghunath Kasera, along with meenakari expert Arun Kumar Verma. 'The creation is a testament to the rich craft heritage of Kashi and showcases the strength of India's GI ecosystem,' Dr Rajni Kant said. On this occasion, Modi urged artisans and weavers to take India's indigenous crafts global through the mantra of 'Swadeshi and Local to Global.' He emphasised the legal significance of GI as a symbol of local identity and called for robust measures to protect and promote it.

Alignment concerns delay Vizhinjam-Navaikulam outer ring road project
Thiruvananthapuram: The outer ring road project from Vizhinjam to Navaikulam in the state capital is set to be delayed. Union road transport minister stated in Parliament that the current alignment has serious design flaws and was now under review. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now In response to a question in Lok Sabha raised by Attingal MP Adoor Prakash, Gadkari confirmed that the initial alignment, determined by the state feasibility study, would result in extensive hill cutting and major ecological damage. As a result, the alignment was being re-examined in coordination with the state govt to reduce environmental impact. Originally pitched at 62.7km with an estimated construction cost of Rs 8,000 crore, the project is to be built and managed by National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), under Bharatmala Pariyojana scheme. Affected landowners, many of whom surrendered their land documents to the revenue department over two years ago, have been left in limbo, waiting for compensation. Even after project approval, compensation is only due once final alignment and clearances are endorsed by the competent authority, a move the MP calls 'a grave injustice'. Compensation delays stem partly from stalled environmental clearance: the southern sector (Vizhinjam to Thekkada) received clearance in 2023, but the northern section (Thekkada to Navaikulam) remains legally blocked after a May 16, 2025, Supreme Court ruling annulled post-facto green clearance provisions. The State Level Environment Impact Assessment Authority (SEIAA) term also lapsed in March and the authority has shifted to the central ministry, further delaying approvals. Meanwhile, land acquisition costs have doubled, from an initial Rs 1,800 crore to over Rs 3,800 crore, and coverage includes 314 hectares across 24 villages. Valuations are set to expire in Aug, raising urgency, since delayed payment triggers 12% annual interest under the Compensation Act. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now A high-level meeting chaired by chief minister's principal secretary K M Abraham earlier this month instructed NHAI to finalise land acquisition and disburse compensation within two months. Despite Rs 700 crore transferred to NHAI in Jan, no payments have been made. Landowners action council, represented by S Chandramohan Nair, threatened a hunger strike if disbursement doesn't begin soon. Adoor Prakash insisted that the state must take urgent steps to realise the project and ensure compensation was delivered without further delay. Earlier, PWD minister P A Mohamed Riyas informed the state that the final approval for the project would be granted by the end of July.

Punjab vigilance raids realtor hours after he joins BJP; political vendetta, says leader
The Punjab Vigilance Bureau (VB) Saturday conducted searches at three premises linked to real estate developer and former Akali leader Ranjit Singh Gill in Chandigarh's Sector 2, barely 12 hours after he was inducted into the BJP by Haryana CM Nayab Singh Saini. Gill and and the BJP strongly condemned the action, accusing the AAP government of indulging in 'political vendetta'. The Vigilance Bureau, however, claimed to have uncovered details of suspicious financial transactions running into crores between Gillco Developers — the Mohali-based realty firm founded by Gill — and entities linked with Shiromani Akali Dal leader Bikram Singh Majithia who is currently in jail after being arrested in a disproportionate assets case. Gill was the 'halka in-charge' of Kharar for the Akali Dal till he quit the party in July. He was widely tipped to join AAP, especially after ruling party's Kharar MLA, Anmol Gagan Maan, announced her resignation and decision to quit politics on July 19. However, she took back her resignation the very next day. A senior vigilance official said that the searches at Gill's residence was in furtherance of the investigations into an FIR (No. 22, dated June 25) registered at Punjab Vigilance Bureau (VB) Police Station Flying Squad, SAS Nagar, against Majithia. The official added that searches were carried out three premises linked to Gillco Developers in Punjab and Chandigarh. 'During the searches, the Bureau uncovered details of suspicious financial transactions running into crores between Gillco Developers and entities linked with Majithia. Further investigations are ongoing,' the official said. Majithia was held on June 25. According to the FIR registered by the Vigilance Bureau, its preliminary investigation has revealed that more than Rs 540 crore worth of 'drug money' was laundered in several ways and Majithia had allegedly facilitated it. The official added that after registration of FIR against Majithia, certain suspicious financial links and transactions between Gillco Developers and some of the entities had come to notice. 'These were developed in a meticulous manner by conducting investigations. To conduct further in-depth inquiries into these transactions and to gather relevant evidence, the Vigilance Bureau conducted these searches in accordance with procedure established by law,' the official said. Bureau officials said several incriminating documents, electronic devices and other evidences have been seized in the ongoing searches. An official spokesperson said that the search operations were conducted strictly in accordance with the legal procedures and the search was still underway. 'Electronic devices and relevant documents were also seized during the searches', he added.
