'M3GAN 2.0' review: Killer robot girl gets new foe (but no upgrade) in sequel
Rather than being clever like the original movie, a horror-tinged sci-fi satire/parental cautionary tale, sequel "M3GAN 2.0" (★★ out of four; rated PG-13; in theaters June 27) is the type of combo goofy comedy/undercooked action flick that would earn an epic sick burn from M3GAN herself. She's the needle-dropping, TikTok-ready meme queen who's supposed to slay, and in this one, she just loses her way.
It's been two years since inventor Gemma (Allison Williams) created a high-tech companion for her orphaned niece Cady (Violet McGraw) and the overprotective M3GAN went on a homicidal spree. While it got Gemma in a lot of hot water, now she's turned it around and become quite the AI ethicist.

But the government would like another word. It seems an earlier model of M3GAN was turned into a military-grade covert operative named Amelia (Ivanna Sakhno) who's now gone rogue, seeking out an old piece of powerful technology that would make humanity expendable. To combat Amelia, M3GAN needs to get back in the game, but Gemma's reluctant to do much more than put her AI attitude in a kids toy, worrying that she'll break bad again.
Amelia proves to be such a nuisance that M3GAN gets her wish and Gemma's team creates a stronger, faster, taller body suitable for fighting and dancing.
Thankfully, M3GAN is as sassy as ever - otherwise this thing would be far less watchable - but her unhinged spirit that was so delightfully delicious in the first film is sacked in the name of 'personal growth' and Tom Cruise-y airborne action sequences.
The addition of Sakhno, last seen as a lightsaber-wielding antagonist in "Ahsoka," is a nice touch. While M3GAN is clearly a creepy doll brought to life, Sakhno's angular face and doe eyes lend a heightened human quality to Amelia, who's also top notch at delivering unnerving death stares. Among the returning crew, Brian Jordan Alvarez gets more to do as Cole, one of Gemma's scientific colleagues, and it feels earned after his hilarious breakthrough FX comedy series "English Teacher."
The movie sets up an epic battle between M3GAN and Amelia, and they do have a few good tussles. But what promises to be a battle on the level of the rock-em, sock-em robot action of 'Terminator 2: Judgement Day' is overcomplicated by a nonsensical subplot involving another killer machine from the '80s. For real, if a 'M3GAN' movie has one rule, it's don't mess up the fembot throwdown.
Writer/director Gerard Johnstone's sequel fumbles quite a few things it shouldn't, though. It feels weirdly dated: There's a running joke involving Cady using Steven Seagal as a role model – good luck explaining him to the kids – and in what's supposed to be an amusing moment that just seems forced, M3GAN serenades a weirded-out Gemma with Kate Bush's 'This Woman's Work.'
'M3GAN 2.0' doesn't do the title character many favors. Still, our girl remains a magnetic presence onscreen – and on computer screens, even when she's being a cyber-nuisance. Let's hope the next time we see her, it's an actual upgrade.

The sci-fi action sequel "M3GAN 2.0" is in theaters June 27. The movie is rated PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association "for strong violent content, bloody images, some strong language, sexual material, and brief drug references."

Zhuzhed-up sodas are nothing new. As a college student, I had the deep pleasure of living above a drugstore with an old-school soda fountain, where I ordered Green Rivers, cherry phosphates, and vanilla Cokes while listening to farmers in from the fields jaw over 5 cent cups of Butter-Nut coffee. Places like this are a dying breed. Swig and its ilk are the modern version, so of course dirty sodas have gone viral. With the 2024 debut of Hulu's 'The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives,' a reality show for people so obsessed with drama they want to spend their free time watching someone else's, dirty sodas got an even bigger moment. At But the truest dirty soda experience in these parts can be found in Clinton, where last year Lauren Nanof and her husband, Chris, opened 'I grew up in Clinton, I went to schools in Clinton, and I always had this idea of a little soda shop in our town, a place people could gather,' Nanof says. She was thinking of milkshakes and floats and the like. Then came dirty soda. She and Chris tried making their own. They loved it. She researched and realized there was nothing like it around. There's a Dairy Queen in town, and ice cream stand standouts like Rota Spring Farm and Kimball Farm in the area. Dirty soda was a niche, albeit a risk: Did enough people know what it was? Advertisement First they opened the candy shop. In designing The Fountain, Nanof made the most of her skills from her previous business, specializing in cabinet finishing and interior painting. The result is a candy-colored charmer, with striped walls, ice cream paraphernalia, neon signs, and a Barbie-pink payphone small children stare at with confusion. The soda and ice cream side of the business opened in October, coinciding nicely with 'Secret Lives of Mormon Wives' streaming fervor. There is also a mobile soda cart Nanof and crew bring to events. 'I knew it was going to be good to introduce people to dirty soda, but I never realized what a community aspect it would bring,' Nanof says. 'It's so many people's favorite place to come. We're on a bus stop, so we get flooded after school with people coming in to sit. Grandparents or parents bring kids. It's so nice to see people sit down and share a drink together.' The Fountain hosts all kinds of events, from music and movie Mondays with themed menus to community fund-raisers. When they post a drink on social media, everyone comes in and orders it. They are genuinely delightful. On a recent visit, I order a flight of four small sodas for $12.50, a merciful option for the indecisive and dirty soda curious alike. Some of the offerings are too sweet for my taste (fie on you, Cooler Than a Colada), but I would happily drink concoctions like The Founder (Dr. Pepper with vanilla syrup and coconut creamer) and the Creamy Cola Crush (Coke with sweet cream, raspberry puree, and fresh lime juice) any day. Maybe it's because I'm a whiskey/amaro person, but the brown soda options seem to work better than those with a Sprite/Fresca/Mountain Dew base. There are more than 40 dirty sodas on The Fountain's menu, not to mention all the floats, shakes, soft-serve, stackers (ice cream and toppings layered in a cup), and outliers like The Fountain looks as if it's always been here on High Street in Clinton. Taiwan plans AI projects to boost economy by $510 billion
TAIPEI (Reuters) -Taiwan plans to launch its "Ten Major AI Infrastructure Projects" initiative, aimed at generating more than T$15 trillion ($510 billion) in economic value by 2040 as it strives to become a global leader in artificial intelligence. Premier Cho Jung-tai said in a Facebook post late on Tuesday that Taiwan aims to leverage its information and communications technology (ICT) sector and world-leading semiconductor manufacturing capabilities to become a global AI influencer and a "smart technology island." Under the initiative, Taiwan has identified three core technologies as strategic priorities: silicon photonics, quantum technology and AI robotics. Silicon photonics is a technology that Taiwan's TSMC, the world's largest contract chipmaker, and many other firms in the industry are actively developing. The government aims to position Taiwan as a global leader in silicon photonics by aligning the sector with future AI development needs. Taiwan also hopes to become a key hub for AI robotics by tapping its hardware and ICT supply chains. Industry groups, including one led by Foxconn Chairman Young Liu, have backed the move with the formation of the Taiwan AI Robotics Industry Grand Alliance on Tuesday to support the local development of AI robotics and related ecosystems. Taiwan also plans to establish a quantum technology industry chain. The 10 projects also include the development of sovereign AI - ability to build and control domestic AI technologies - and computing infrastructure, efforts to balance AI development across different regions of the island, and the introduction of AI across a wide range of industries. The government also calls for expanding investment in AI innovation, with more than T$100 billion ($3.08 billion) in venture capital funding, as it seeks to become a global hub for AI talent and investment. The initiative targets the creation of 500,000 jobs and the establishment of three international-level research laboratories.
