MFL to fix VAR flaws ahead of new M-League season
Although FA of Malaysia (FAM) referees' committee chairman Datuk S. Sivasundaram described VAR's performance last season as "excellent" — citing an average of 0.57 on-field reviews per match and a review time of 2.27 minutes — several key errors sparked criticism.
The most notable incident saw referee Razlan Joffri Ali and a VAR official suspended for two matches and retrained following a contentious Super League clash between Perak and Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT).
MFL acting chief executive officer Shazli Shaik said steps are being taken to improve the VAR application.
"To date, we've conducted two VAR improvement sessions. FIFA and AFC representatives also took part in the sessions," said Shazli.
"Last season was our first using VAR, and we've noted the shortcomings. We're working to implement those corrections for the upcoming season."
Shazli added that the 2025-2026 M-League schedule will be released on Friday.
Malaysia will be represented by JDT and Selangor in the Asean Club Championship.
JDT, as reigning Super League champions, will again compete in the Asian Champions League (ACL) Elite, while Selangor will feature in ACL2.
Meanwhile, Super League newcomers Immigration FC have until Saturday to confirm their home venue for the new season.

MFL to improve VAR for new season after controversial debut
KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Football League (MFL) have said improvements will be made for the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system for use in the upcoming Malaysia League 2025-2026 season after several controversial incidents during its introduction last season. Acting MFL chief executive officer Mohd Shazli Shaik Mohd said two special briefings regarding the improvement of the system were conducted by the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) together with representatives of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) and the International Football Federation (FIFA). According to him, this is a step to improve the quality of refereeing ahead of the new season starting in August. 'The improvements are not yet in place, but we are aware of it (the issue) because last year was the first time VAR was implemented. 'So from the issues we identified last year, we will improve it for the new season,' he said recently. Last year, FAM referees committee chairman Datuk S. Sivasundaram said the performance of the referees and the implementation of VAR were rated as excellent, with an average of 0.57 'On-field Review' (OFR) per match and an average of 2.27 minutes of added time used for VAR reviews. However, several errors sparked criticism, including after referee Razlan Joffri Ali and a VAR official were suspended for two matches after the Super League match between Perak and Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT). Razlan, however, came in for high praise for his excellent refereeing in the 2024-2025 Malaysia Cup final between JDT and Pahang, which the Southern Tigers won 2-1. Shazli said the MFL are also now on the right track to ensure that the new season runs smoothly and is free from scheduling delays like those that occurred last season. The 24-year-old is now ready to show his speed with the senior team in the Super League next month after earning promotion from the Under-23 squad. Born in Afghanistan but raised in Holland, Musawi had been in the Red Giants' youth squad since October last year. 'Since my transfer last year, from the very first moment I set foot in Selangor, I've felt a strong connection, and I immediately liked the club,' said Musawi. 'I started in the U-23 team, and now I'm proud to be part of the first team. 'The club is fantastic and professional, and I believe I can grow a lot here, not just as a footballer but as a person as well.' Musawi began his football journey through the youth ranks of AGOVV Apeldoorn before joining the academy at FC Twente in 2011. He played 31 matches with the Under-21 squad and went on to score 10 goals, while also making appearances for the club's reserve team. Musawi then continued his development at the youth set-ups of Vitesse and PEC Zwolle before transitioning to senior football when he flew to Australia and signed with Para Hills Knights, playing in the State League 1. Then moving to Malaysia in 2024, Musawi was initially featured in Selangor's Under-23 squad for the MFL Cup, making a notable impact with a strong performance which saw him training with the first team throughout last season.
