Marcos: Gov't monitoring 'price gouging' of goods

GMA Network4 days ago

CAPAS CITY — President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. said Wednesday the government is monitoring "price gouging" in the consumer market.
Marcos made the statement as he noticed that the prices of some goods have already increased.
"Iyon lamang binabantayan natin ngayon 'yung price gouging. Dahil ang dami ko nang nakita nagtataas ng presyo, hindi naman tumaas ang presyo ng langis. So, iyon ang babantayan natin ngayon. That's what we are going to watch," Marcos told reporters.
(We're monitoring the price gouging. Because I've seen a lot of price hikes even though fuel prices have not increased. So that's what we will monitor right now. That's what we are going to watch.)
Asked if subsidies for drivers and other sectors would continue, Marcos said if the price has not changed, it would be "business as usual."
"Kung hindi nagbago 'yung presyo, then we do the same like before. Ang sinasabi namin hindi ayuda, subsidy 'pag tumaas ang presyo," Marcos said.
(If the price has not changed, then we do the same like before. We're saying subsidy if the price has not increased.)
"Eh kung hindi tumaas ang presyo ng langis, then there is no need for that. We can proceed–, we can do business as usual," he added.
(If the price has not increased, then there is no need for that. We can proceed–, we can do business as usual.)
Petroleum companies are implementing a big-time price hike in fuel products this week on a staggered basis as the Philippines reels from the effects of the Israel-Iran conflict.
In the wake of the development, a group of supermarket owners has said the prices of manufactured items such as canned goods, processed foods, and drinks would depend on the decision of management.
Earlier, Department of Energy officer-in-charge Sharon Garin said that as of June 24, the average price of crude oil stood at about $69 per barrel.
This came after United States President Donald Trump announced that a ceasefire between Israel and Iran was already in place. Trump asked both sides not to violate it.
Due to this announcement, Garin said the government's fuel subsidy program for the public transport and agriculture sectors might not be activated. — VDV, GMA Integrated News

Trump slams Israel's prosecutors over Netanyahu corruption trial

US President Donald Trump welcomes Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the entrance of the White House in Washington, US, February 4, 2025. REUTERS/Leah Millis/File photo President Donald Trump on Saturday lashed out at prosecutors in Israel over the corruption trial that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has faced, saying Washington, having given billions of dollars worth of aid to Israel, was not going to "stand for this". Netanyahu was indicted in 2019 in Israel on charges of bribery, fraud and breach of trust – all of which he denies. The trial began in 2020 and involves three criminal cases. "It is INSANITY doing what the out-of-control prosecutors are doing to Bibi Netanyahu," Trump said in a Truth Social post, adding that the judicial process was going to interfere with Netanyahu's ability to conduct talks with Palestinian militants Hamas, and Iran. Trump's second post over the course of a few days defending Netanyahu and calling for the cancellation of the trial went a step further to tie Israel's legal action to US aid. "The United States of America spends Billions of Dollar [sic] a year, far more than on any other Nation, protecting and supporting Israel. We are not going to stand for this," Trump said. Netanyahu "right now" was in the process of negotiating a deal with Hamas, Trump said, without giving further details. On Friday, the Republican president told reporters that he believes a ceasefire is close. Hamas has said it is willing to free remaining hostages in Gaza under any deal to end the war, while Israel says it can only end if Hamas is disarmed and dismantled. Hamas refuses to lay down its arms. Interest in resolving the Gaza conflict has heightened in the wake of the US and Israeli bombing of Iran's nuclear facilities. 2 OFWs in Iran from Central Visayas seek repatriation

Two overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) in Iran from Central Visayas sought assistance from the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) to be repatriated because of the impact of the Israel-Iran tension. The OFWs are from Cebu and Siquijor. Siquijor is still under the jurisdiction of OWWA 7 since the agency has no regional office yet in the newly created Negros Island Region (NIR). It was learned from Christina Marie Vistal, officer from OWWA, that the families of the two OFWs filed the repatriation request. While OWWA is glad of the reported ceasefire, it informs the public that Alert Level 3 has not been lifted yet, which means that no OFW will be allowed to leave the Philippines to work in countries affected by the conflict. It was learned that on June 24, 2025, at least 35 OFWs from Israel were repatriated, but none of them are from Central Visayas. The repatriated OFWs already received financial assistance from OWWA and from the Department of Migrant Workers. —GMA Regional TV

Yemen missile launched toward Israel 'most likely' intercepted, Israeli army says

The Israeli army said on Saturday that a missile launched from Yemen toward Israeli territory had been "most likely successfully intercepted". Israel has threatened Yemen's Iran-aligned Houthi movement – which has been attacking Israel in what it says is solidarity with Gaza – with a naval and air blockade if its attacks on Israel persist. Since the start of Israel's war in Gaza in October 2023, the Houthis, who control most of Yemen, have been firing at Israel and at shipping in the Red Sea, disrupting global trade. Most of the dozens of missiles and drones they have launched have been intercepted or fallen short. Israel has carried out a series of retaliatory strikes. —Reuters
